How to use Compression for Beginners on GarageBand iOS
It may not be the most glamorous or exciting effect in GarageBand for iOS' effect arsenal, but rest assured - the compressor is one of the most useful tools available to you.
GarageBand for iOS’ built in compressor gives you all the controls you need to shape your sound and get your tracks sitting perfectly in a mix.
In this Garageband tutorial for beginners I’ll go over what exactly compression is, how it works and give you some pointers on how to use it on different track types in GarageBand for iOS.

Hey Patrick, kudos to you and your video work for GarageBand! Love the video, however, I noticed one issue... your description on Compression ratio was backwards. You stated in the video that for a 2:1 ratio for every 1 dB it goes above threshold to is reduced 2 dB. In actual 2:1 means that for every 2 dB it goes above threshold it is reduced to 1. So for example, if my threshold is set to -30 and my level goes above that by 10 dB then the compressor would reduce that to 5 dB. 10 to 5 would equal a 2:1 ratio (2:1 can be seen as 1/2. Reducing 9 dB to 3 would be an example of 3:1 ratio or 1/3 and so forth.

There something about a drum kit with insane compression that just sounds brutal to me. I love to do that with room mics when I'm recording real drums.

Kenny Bobo I do everything in the box so have very limited experience with hardware compressors I’m afraid.

What compression settings did you use for your voice? I record guided meditations (so only voice). The second point is that I have found that when I turn on the compressor very low level noise is introduced that I can hear between the pauses when I am speaking. What am I missing there? The noise is not there when I turn off the compressor. Thanks.

Hey there. Thanks for this video. I am just getting started and the tracks I am recording in GarageBand with my electric guitar don’t have the sound wave lengths on them. They are recording at a decent volume, but don’t have the visual sound waves to help visualize your tracks sound. Any tips? Cheers

Compressors are often recommended to get more SUSTAIN, by supposedly RAISING the volume of the dying signal. But I don't see how to do that; compressors seem to lower the volume of loud signals; but where do they raise the volume of degrading signal to keep them sustaining instead of dying away? Thanks

YOU need to raise the overall volume once you’ve applied compression, usually with the on board gain control.
