Yep. Since I switched to a quad cane that can balance itself, it's been easier, but it still falls down regularly. I have a heavy duty tie I can use to secure it to things. But places like restaurants, especially booths, can be difficult.

Great, practical, real-life tips here! 😄👌 And it's very considerate & sweet when people offer to help others with a momentary disability challenge. It makes them feel good about themselves, to help others. Yes, people can naively get a little crazy being helpful - I could tell you some funny stories. But I've learned to give them a big smile & say, "Thank you for offering! I can handle it just fine. Plus, it's part of my therapy." 😊👍 (The therapy part works like a charm.) You realize the importance of letting others be kind to you the first time someone rudely let's a restaurant door slam in your face. Or watches you struggle with a torn bag of groceries, without offering a hand. It stings, whether you have a physical issue or not.

I have klipple trenaunay syndrome and have lost a great deal of my mobility in my left leg. I've been trying to get out of my wheelchair more and so have been using under arm crutches for over 7 years. As you know/imagine I have shoulder issues and upper back issues due to it. I went on a mobility journey and used the iWalk 2.0 and 3.0 for the last 4 years alternating eith my crutches and wheelchair.. but now I'm having more pain were that's no longer a option So I'm looking to learn how to use forearm crutches to aid my mobility longer term and appreciate the videos you've done that I've used to learn/research

Thanks for the video. I'm sat here watching it because I've broken a bone in my foot and am wearing a plaster cast. Back in 2006 I snapped my cruciate ligament in Indonesia and was given a set of underarm crutches before returning to the UK. The first doctor I met started laughing when he saw the crutches and immediately said "I'll take them off you straightaway, we haven't used that type for years. They damage the nerves under your arm." So I'm a bit surprised after watching a few videos to see that they still seem to be in regular use around the world.

I commend you man. I’m trying to transition to crutches temporarily as I had ankle surgery and am no weight bearing on my right foot for a while and the knee scooter is actually killing my knee. Even so I was in the mall yesterday and my basket fell off the front of my scooter and people panicked. I was grateful people cared enough to help but at the same time I could see how long term that would probably get old. Anyway thanks for the video because I was trying to figure out how the heck I was going to get patient medication from point a to point b on crutches.

Okay, so I'm currently writing a novel (long-time thing I said I'd do someday until COVID came along and... looks like I suddenly have the time). One of the major characters is an amputee and uses forearm crutches to get around. I've been leaning on your videos and those of Cairn Atkinson quite a bit for reference, but there's one scene/aspect of her life that I'm not quite sure about and I'm hoping you can help: she eats at a cafeteria and has to carry a tray to her table. She doesn't have access to underarm crutches. Is there any way to make this work? Is it as especially difficult and annoying as I think it would be? It's a minor detail, but I want to get it right and have her character ring true and I'm honestly pretty stuck here.

I only use one or both outside my home, depending on where I'm going, how far, state of my legs and back that day, using braces or not... so many options! (I surf furniture indoors). Grocery shopping - one crutch while pushing the shopping cart with the other hand, or two hands on shopping cart with crutches in the cart? Im curious about dif ways to do this. I have both legs but cant put much weight on my knees, and one knee is almost totally useless. My current shopping solution is a wheelchair with a handbasket strapped to my lap but id love to work up to using a full shopping cart somehow.

As a lifelong forearm crutch user I have a tip about bags with handles okay so this is going to sound weird but put your forearms through the handle of the bag and then put your hand through the crutch like normal this will automatically make the handle of the bag loop around the top of the crutch it stays in place and it doesn't throw off your balance as much as on the crutch handle

@@JoshSundquist Could I ask a real talk question, its sort of related but im not sure if youve addressed this before. Hope its okay! i got to wondering, I know youve had many years to cope with the amputation itself. As you got older, and the gentleman you became and are ( Ashley is a very lucky lady😊) How have you coped with the sort of cognitive dissonance that must happen where your heart wants to step in to carry things for people, even if you saw a stranger struggling on the street, but having to at times not step in or even accept help instead? I just wonder how the gentleman nature in you handles this in particular? Or, with the amputation happening so young, if you had thought about this aspect before or maybe had no need to cope at all? Just had been curious. Only IF and a huge IF you want to share - absolutely no obligation!! 💖🙂

Bit of an odd question. I think this would be more of a female identifying persons problem if it is one, but I don’t know a female who uses the forearm crutches to ask so bear with me. If you have one leg and walk with the forearm crutches and wear a shoes that is super flat one day (sandal/flip flop/converse/vans type shoes) and then wear one with a bit of a platform or a heel the next (boots, platforms, heels, work boots(timberland style)). Or another situation, maybe you want to stand up a little taller one day. Can you adjust the the crutches to fit your shoes or posture preferences for that day? Or are they made specifically for you to be ergonomically correct and most efficient for your body specifically. If that is the case, do you stick to one type of shoes? Would shoes with a inch heel like boots mess up your posture?
@JoshSundquist
@JoshSundquist 4 жыл бұрын
I can’t speak to heals specifically but yes the height of your shoe sole certainly affects how you walk. Most crutches are adjustable (unless they’re custom made). So for example I have a combat boot with a very tall heal. I usually use taller crutches when I walk with that shoe vs a flip flop
