If you don't have the dough for expensive outboard gear, but you've put sweat, blood, and tears into building the perfect rig of pedals, don't worry -- we've got you covered. With the addition of a reamp box and a few of your favorite pedals, you can throw effects on dry tracks with ease. In this episode of Recording Tricks, Sean shows us how to use effects pedals in lieu of outboard effects.

There are WAAAYYYY too many tutorials like this one in which the content provider assumes the viewer knows 99% more than what they do. People wouldn't be looking up "how-tos" on KZfaq if they understood stuff already! You could just read up on it in a fraction of the time! How about this: Don't assume people know anything. Take them step-by-step, explaining along the way. Then you'd have people who really understand things. Doing it like this, you get an annoyingly piecemeal sense of how everything works together. And you have to watch 30 videos, assemble the content in your head, and only then MAYBE understand the topic.Videos like this really waste people's time.

this guy seems genuine he might not be the best at explaining he seems to be coming from a engineer perspective not so much an artist perspective ,but id loved to have him in the studio when making record his true self is engineer mind not guitar player singer and songwriter creative mind that's what's sick about working in the studio my experience is that's where bands find their sound and again my experience but reach that level of its official .you can play live forever and never reach the sonic power and true to what you want to sound like live gigs only with some demo self releases bad sounding releases on social media or Spotify,itunes,etc..just won't cut it I encourage all musicians to get into recording first get the sound you want mix it get it mastered proper for analog platform 2inch tape or 1/2 inch and for streaming sites iTunes ,Spotify, etc as well cause that well be your main way of releasing records but nothing beats tape.its what digital did and does simulates all that awesome tape , rack unit gear ,mjxng consoles , micing and preamps tube. digital has never been its own thing its just copied sound and the new better higher end daws coming out every year are just better sounding simulations . I use both digital and tape .track drums on tape even a 4 track portages studio that uses cassette tape gives saturation no digital can it'll just sound closer to tape saturation .thanks for the tutorial reverb I love your gear and instrument buying site choice ear keep it up !!!

Use an i/o plugin on the track in your DAW or adjust the output on the track if you can. Set the output to output 1 on your interface, for example. Go from output 1 on your interface with a 1/4 inch jack in to your pedal. Go out of the pedal with a 1/4 inch jack and back in to input1 on your interface. Make a new track to record on. Set the input to "input1", hit record, and you're done.

@matthewjames596
@matthewjames596 6 жыл бұрын
You don't "need" a reamp box but a reamp will likely match impedance more closely to what the amp and pedal operate at input.
@Deeplycloseted435
@Deeplycloseted435 6 жыл бұрын
It does make a difference. Turning the gain down doesn’t mean there still isn’t an impedance mismatch. If you want to get all you can out of the pedals, and best quality sound, then reamp. ESPECIALLY gain dependent pedals like overdrive or distortion....big difference. Even reverbs and delays, even on pedals that are “allegedly” line level, like Eventide H9, its an improvement in sound quality.
@mod3l
@mod3l 5 жыл бұрын
Essentially, for me the biggest difference is that sometimes when you're not using the reamp box you can loose some low end. That's not always present but different pedals expect different signals so expect mixed results. Sometimes there is no difference or is barely audible but in reality you'll never know untill you try out both methods yourself. Note that there can be many different factors (impedance, voltage, db) so the best option would be just to play around, but keep in mind, that using a reamp box is the fastest, easiest and safest solution.

I'm knew to this insert world (and I watched the reamp video) but are you running out of your interface (line level) --> reamp box (back to instrument level) --> into the pedals and then --> into the hi-z input since you're still in instrument level? I have an Apollo Twin like you did in the other video so with this I couldn't do stereo since the hi-z is mono unless I had a pedal that could convert it to line level (like an Eventide Space) which could also give me stereo into the combi jacks...is that right?

Hey Sean, thank you so much for this video, I still don't quite understand but I'm going to review this and the last video a bunch of times and I know I'll figure it out. I've been playing for years as a solo act. I was given something called an "Aphex 104 Aural Exciter Type C2 with Big Bottom" years ago and shown how to hook it up with my PA. It sounded amazing and I still use it. I just got into recording and have been using Studio One 3 Pro and can't figure out how to get it to work with my DAW. It has to be something like this and I'm pretty sure this will help, I just need to completely understand it. They do make a Plug-In but it's pretty expensive. I just hate to put out more cash when this works just fine. I don't know exactly what it does but it sure makes what comes out of the speakers, well, just wonderful... Thanks for your time Sean!

Delay Compensation on Pro Tools is for processing with plug-ins. You never, ever, want to record with Delay Compensation on. If you want to time align things that have latency delay, like in this video, you'd be using tab to transient and nudging the audio files in place.

Nice one, dude. Since I'm a littly cynical of going back and forth between analog and digital too many times, I think I'll try routing my outboard signal via a reverb or chorus pedal before it reaches my DAW at all. All a question of good gain-staging and experimentation. Nice video :-)

Really useful advise, but be careful with it. Guitar pedals are mostly mono... Reverb and delay are in most cases used as stereo effects and if you are doing mastering, bus processing or working with any stereo track you need stereo effects. Also, your interface conversion between analog and digital might not be as great as you think. Having something in analog is great, but it doesn't mean that it's necessarily better. You might get better results from plugins in the end.
@Dustiliciousz

I'm new to this and am wondering, isn't there a stereo reamp box in the market?
@MiloshMitrovic
@MiloshMitrovic 7 жыл бұрын
There is a stereo reamp box, but many reverb and delay pedals are mono, so it doesn't matter if you split it after the effect to stereo, you will only get double mono recording. And most of the comp/eq/distortion pedals are mono also. So it can be used for limited number of situations and it complicates your workflow.
@Dustiliciousz
@Dustiliciousz 7 жыл бұрын
Milosh Mitrovic Thank you for taking your time! I'm thinking of buying the Strymon Timeline, and already have the Bigsky. These are stereo, so technically with the addition of a stereo reamp box, stereo mixig would be possible right?

Balanced (TRS or XLR, whatever your interface outputs) from interface to reamp box (You can use a TRS to XLR adapter if needed at this stage). Standard instrument cable to get from reamp box to pedals and from pedals back into your interface (assuming it has a hi-z input otherwise you will need a di as well).

No, you can do that. If you do the same exact thing in this video, then end the pedal chain by connecting to an amplifier instead of a di box. Once you have signal going to the amp, just mic it up to your interface and daw. Now you’re ready to record the reamped tracks through an amp.

@Sursie_Metzger
@Sursie_Metzger 3 жыл бұрын
I have just recorded directly through my effects but have seen people explain how to reamp with them without using a reamp box etc. But it varies on what kind of sound you want to go for. Apparently if you have a buffer pedal or any boss pedal (since they have buffers built in) you can also use that as a reamp box. It’s not totally necessary, it just gives you a better chance at creating as clean of a recording with your effects as possible by converting the impedance that travels through and out of your pedals etc.
@tomvice
@tomvice 3 жыл бұрын
Yes. Impedance mismatch makes the signal really sound really thin without it. You'll ALSO need a DI after the pedal if you have a focusrite crappy interface (that are notorious for their shitty hi-z inputs)
