That’s a really helpful video because the implication from the less than clear instructions with the Ribble bike which I’ve just bought is that on pressing the power assist button you then stay with the power assist indicator - green, amber, red etc - and I was getting confused on my initial test rides as it flashed and defaulted back to green - which I now understand was the battery indicator, not the power level even though it seemed to be delivering more power. So a super helpful video!

Thanks, Sarah, if I helped then my work is done 😀 I find the simple way to remember is press twice for a power change. Once just shows your current setting and the second makes the change. I hope you enjoy your new Ribble, which has come just in time for better weather and greater freedom.

@@Zxcv-q2f hello, Bob. I don’t use the app when riding, so I can’t confirm. However, my understanding from what others have said is that the app is battery hungry. I keep my phone in my rear jersey pocket and found that it disconnects from the bike in that location. I have just mounted the Garmin Edge Cycling GPS handlebar remote for eBike by the left hand brake lever on the drops. Simple up and down arrows put the power up and down through 1,2& 3. I use the Mahle Smartbike x35 App which comes with the Ribble x35 Al-E to see which power level I am at. Much faster to change each time and you can go up and down fast. Seems you have to tap twice sometimes, but errors can be corrected so fast it doesn’t slow you down. A bit pricey at £70, but a transformation for all x35 powered drop handlebar bikes. Dealers don’t seem to be aware that this device works on x35/ebikemotion machines. Hold it really close to the works to get it going first time. After that it just works.

Hey Roy, now that you’ve had your Ribble CGRe for a while, what are your thoughts on the ride comfort? I’ve had a few carbon fiber road bikes, but one frame cracked from one manufacturer, and one frame was recalled from another. My last bike was a titanium, with Ultegra 6700. I sold that about 3 years ago, and haven’t ridden since. I’m interested in the Ribble CGRe, as I’m almost 61, and my legs don’t have the spring in them they once did.
@RideWithRoy
@RideWithRoy 3 жыл бұрын
Hello Ron, tell me about knees! I recently discovered that I can’t run any more😩 However, my GP said that cycling is great for the knees, especially an e bike. Interestingly, I sold a high end Giant carbon bike with Ultegra Di2 to buy the CGRe. I really didn’t like the carbon frame and felt much more secure on my old Fuji Aluminium frame. I’m more interested in long distance rides than speed, so the weight benefits of carbon were wasted on me, and the disadvantages, one of which you experienced, worried me. As for comfort, the CGRe is ideal, especially as it was specified to suit my body shape. If you are able to go to a Ribble facility to be measured it will be worthwhile. My last ride was 100 miles and I was still comfortable at the end. The 35mm tyres run at lower pressure that the 25mm on my carbon road bike and that helps with comfort no end. I hope this helps.

Hi Roy, thanks for sharing this video which I have found really useful as it's much easier to understand than the instructions. I have just bought the Kinesis LYFE bike which is great and I have only been out twice so far. Bluetooth is enabled and my bike does show that it's connected to it but when I have looked at my details on the website and the app, it show no rides and no miles. I do record these on my Garmin/Strava but have not set these to record on the app. I also have another ebike and although this doesn't record rides, I can see my total distance which I find really helpful. Do I need to have the app switched on to record all rides? Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks Angela. I don’t use the app but I do know it has to remain switched on and connected to record. Like you, I record on my Garmin and have that connected to Strava. The app is good for showing your battery charge state and any fault codes, but for navigation and ride recording I don’t rate it - plus it eats the phone battery power. I also found that I would lose the Bluetooth connection if the phone was in my back jersey pocket. I hope that helps but feel free to come back if you need further help.

Hi Roy. I just purchased a less than 1 year old Bianchi Aria E-road. I am trying to get my head around the ebikemotion system. When I start in eco, when idle, it switches to turbo every time. This would probably be a setting (I am using the new Mahle app and my ebike is connected to a wahoo element roam). I can't seem to find a manual or a discussion that mentions this issue. I hope you can help me out here or guide me to sources of information where I could find what's wrong?

@RideWithRoy Жыл бұрын
That doesn’t sound like anything I’ve ever come across, Rudi. When riding with the app connected does it show a fault code? You could check that the sensor and magnetic ring, next to the cassette, is clean and isn’t damaged. My video on removing the back wheel shows this. The only thing I can suggest, other than that, is to is contact a local Ebikmotion dealer, so that’s any dealer whose bikes use the X35. It probably just needs a firmware update. Alternatively, contacting Mahle direct would be a good idea. Please let us know how you get on, either on here or ‘Ride with Roy Subscriber chat’ on Facebook. Either way, it shouldn’t be a show stopper and you have a beautiful bike.

Hi Roy do you know what the white light flashing slowly means as i can’t find anything on the orbea website, thanks 😊
@RideWithRoy
@RideWithRoy 3 жыл бұрын
Are you using a Range Extender, Linda? The slow flashing, or pulsing, is usually associated with charging. When a range extender is used, the main battery will charge when stationary or above 15.5 mph. When this is in process, the lamp will pulse quite slowly in whatever colour charge state the battery is in. If it’s not this, I suggest connecting the app to see if a fault code appears. If there is one, let me know and I’ll ask Ebikemotion for you.

Hello Frank. If you were in mid range (amber), you would have to go through red (high) white (neutral) and then to green (low) as you can’t go backwards. Hi again Roy. I was wondering if your X35 ebikemotion will pair with your Garmin bike computer? I am told that the Orbea Gain’s, past 2020 have ANT+ compatibility but perhaps normally they only have Bluetooth LE? I am looking at a bike computer and interested to see how they work together with the X35 motor.Thanks Roy.
@RideWithRoy
@RideWithRoy 2 жыл бұрын
It certainly doesn’t work on the Garmin Edge, Neil, as the X35 needs Bluetooth 4 or above. I had heard it would connect to the Wahoo. However, as my son was visiting today we tried it on his Wahoo Bolt and couldn’t find any way of connecting that either. I did read about a device that Mahle have developed to allow connection with the Garmin. This is it wilier.com/en/world/eshop/equipment/ant-conversion-kit-mahle-x35-ebikemotion-system. It’s a bit pricey and requires removal of the iWoc button to install the kit within the frame. Personally, I get all the power information I need from the iWoc ‘traffic lightsk, so I won’t be buying one. With the increasing number of bike manufacturers using the X35 it’s something Mahle need to improve so that market leading head units are compatible.
@TheRoybeasley

@@RideWithRoy I have a Wahoo Elemnt Bolt and confirm that it can be connected to the X35 system on the bike, which then gives you the options of an on-screen display of battery charge, assistance mode (given as Eco, Trail and Turbo for Green, Amber and Red modes respectively) and estimated range remaining. No modifications at all required to the bike or the iWoc controller. Wahoo retrospectively updated the Element/Bolt firmware a little while ago to support these functions.
@NeilLavitt
@NeilLavitt 2 жыл бұрын
@@RideWithRoy Thanks so much Roy for looking into this for me. This confirms what I thought. I agree the compatibility issue is something that needs looking at. I have since learned that Orbea’s gain bikes since mid 2020 have the ANT+ kit built in because they include a mini head unit called a Coachman (I think it is a small Wahoo). I have a hunch that Mahle don’t use ANT+ as a default because ANT+ broadcasts itself everywhere and could be connected by multiple people leading to the ability for someone else to control your bike? I have heard the Garmin 1030plus supports the Mahle X35 but I think that is too much of a bike computer for me. I think I’ll see how I go with the Coachman when the Orbea arrives. I’ll get a cadence sensor though. Once again thanks and please also thank your son for trying his Bolt.

@RideWithRoy
@RideWithRoy 4 ай бұрын
Was the light pulsing while plugged into the charger, Carole? If not, it probably wasn’t charging. Also, a white light would normally mean it was fully charged - do you remember how much charge it had left the last time you used it or was it put away flat? I have heard it said that a long press of the button can help, but I’m afraid it sounds very much like a dead battery. If the bike is still under warranty, I would speak to the dealer. Even if it’s not, I would advise emailing Mahle support direct. Even out of warranty they are obliged to rectify problems for up to six years, although outside of warranty the onus is on you to prove their fault. I’m not suggesting you’ve done this, but people sometimes put a bike away over winter and forget it. Lithium batteries don’t like being left fully charged, or dropping below 20% charge, so It’s always advisable to check the battery halfway through winter. I would normally suggest checking the bike with the app, but if there’s no power the app won’t connect. I’m sorry I can’t be of more help so I hope you get support from Mahle.

Thank you, Heiner, and welcome from Germany. There is absolutely no need to use the app if you don’t want to. I only use it to demonstrate for videos. The ‘engine’ parameters should be set to 100% when the bike is delivered, and it’s my recommendation that they are left at that.

I have just asked the same question of the support people at Mahle. They tell me level 1 gives up to 100W (40% of max), level 2 gives up to 175W (70% of max), and level 3 gives up to 250W (100% of max). Where it gets confusing is that in the app, the 'motor mapping' function will show that all three are set at 100%. You can reduce one or more of these if you want, so for example if you set level 1 to 50%, it will give you up to 50W (20% of max), rather than the 100W you started with.

Can you leave it on charge overnight without harm? How long to go from a near no charge to fully charged? On charger now and it’s flashing purple!
@RideWithRoy
@RideWithRoy 3 жыл бұрын
The purple flashing is a fault warning, Bill. In time honoured tradition, switch everything off and try again. If that doesn’t work, connect the app and see if it’s showing a fault code. If it persists, try riding the bike for a short time and try again. The purple light makes an occasional appearance but usually goes away after the off and on treatment or some more use. If not, you would need to contact your dealer or, Ebikemotion customer support, who are very good. As for charging, I’ve never timed it but I would guess 4 hours from almost flat. I have charged overnight, so left it on more than the recommended 5 hours, with no apparent ill effect, but try to do it during the day so I can keep an eye on it. As you probably know, part charges don’t count as a full charge cycle. Charging a half full battery only counts as half a charge, so I top mine up after every ride. It’s also worth noting that you should wait for the light on the charger to turn green before disconnecting, even thought the white light on the bike is no longer pulsing. The most critical thing is not to charge any Lithium battery at below freezing temperatures. This could make it difficult for those keeping the bike in unheated buildings. One way around this is to put the battery on charge as soon as you’ve finished riding, as this will have caused the battery to heat up and the ongoing charge process will maintain the heat. However, if I was needing to regularly charge in below freezing temps I would go for a removable battery type bike. I hope to make a video on battery care and am currently researching it.

@@billcoulter9879 I also like a paper manual but that’s the way the world is going, Bill. I also hate those manuals printed in every language under the sun, so electronic does at least solve that. Thanks Alastair. It’s precisely because I’m in the UK that I prefer to use miles. After all, our speed limits and distances are in miles and not Kilometres. Each to his/her own I guess. Most of my friends use Km but there’s just something about doing a proper century that means more in miles. In future I’ll use both measurements as an on screen caption as a gesture to those metric riders 🙂. Oddly, I only use metric for all other measurements 🤔

Hi On a recent cycling club ride my girlfriends Lapierre eSensium Women’s 300E electric bicycle motor kept on cutting out and then restarting at inconvenient times during a recent windy rolling 40 mile cycle ride. What are the reasons why this could occur? She’s not the most electronically gadget competent person, but she knows how to operate the Mahle 350 operation button and recognises plus understands the colour sequence display. She’s not a strong cyclist and suffers from Asthma, so her electric assist bike was chosen specifically to help her out. Look forward to reading any suggestions you can offer. Thanks Philip ( Shepshed Cycling Club, Leicestershire, UK)

Thanks, Philip. Beautiful part of Leicestershire for cycling you live in. The first thing I would check is that the rear wheel sensor and magnetic ring are in the correct position and aren’t damaged. This can happen when the rear wheel is removed to repair a puncture. I made this video about rear wheel replacement that shows the ring and sensor kzfaq.info/get/bejne/paldnLhmx9S4YGw.html. If it’s not that I am guessing it could be a faulty sensor, in which case it would be best to have this diagnosed by any Ebikemotion qualified mechanic. Alternatively, you could contact Mahle direct. If you need any further help you are welcome to email me ridingwithroy@gmail.com

Hi Roy good post but when you first switch on the system it goes white then green - this green is the system diagnostics telling you all is ok, the next colour tells you the 'charge state' of the battery. So if you start white-green-white your system is ok and you have 100% battery white-green-green 75% and so on. It's after you get the third colour you set the level you want, so if you want full press till red leave it & it should flash red a few times then go to white; then you're set. After this the colour is the battery charge level. It takes longer to type that do.
@RideWithRoy
@RideWithRoy 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your input. I’m not sure how this differs from what I said. The important point I make is that selecting white after red provides a neutral setting, which allows the power to be totally disconnected while maintaining the app connection.

Hello Roy, I've had my CGRe for just over a month now, and ridden 500+ miles. Your video is really helpful, thank you. I'm still getting used to white = power on and white flashing = standby. Last Saturday I rode less than 20 miles in a strongish wind , stopped for coffee, checked the app and saw that I had already used 50% of the battery. I turned it off for most of the next 25 miles, but judicious use of power saw me home.

Simon Medaney thanks, Simon. Mine has just had its 1st birthday, so I’m now used to getting the most out of it. If you have a look at my range extender video you will see that I managed 100 miles on the main battery alone, while heavily loaded. Much of that ride was into wind, but not too much climbing. Were you using full power? If I was using full power, 40 miles would seem reasonable, depending on variables such as weight and climbing. The beauty of the CGR e is that it’s light enough to ride without power, so you will get used to managing power. Please keep in touch and let me know how things develop for you.

Having an effective gear change on the top tube seems like such a step backwards in bike design. You have to take your eyes and one hand off the bars just to select a new power level. Surely it's better to have a bike where this is on the handlebars?
@RideWithRoy
@RideWithRoy Жыл бұрын
Less of an issue than you might think. Gear change remains the same, on the bars, but power change requires a button push. As power is usually less frequently changed, due to the lightness of the bike, the rider is more likely to be taking their hands off for signalling. Mahle do supply a bar controller option, but the button makes the bike look less like a traditional e bike.

I prefer SKS mudguards but needed wider for the Ribble. I got a cheap pair of Halfords own brand which are okay but not a patch on SKS. The main requirement is to match your tyre size. Assuming they are 700 x 35, then SKS Bluemells Olympic Racer should be ideal. Cutting the steel stays is a challenge, but once fitted they are easily removable for summer.

Hi Roy - I have a question that I've asked of a few users and got nearly as many answers! I understand that by using the App you can customise the amount of assistance available for each of the three levels (Green, Amber and Red) individually on a sliding scale. My question is to ask whether these customised settings are "saved" on the bike's circuitry, or whether the App needs to be running all the time? To put it another way - If the rider used the App to set the level of assistance in the "Green" setting at say 50% of maximum, but then switched off his phone (or left it at home) while he went for a ride, would the bike give him 50% or the full 100% ? Keep up the good work on your channel - I've enjoyed your videos immensely.

@@RideWithRoy Cheers Roy - I took the bike out for her maiden voyage today (I've never ridden an e-bike before). Initially I was a bit unimpressed by the level of assistance available in Green mode. Until I powered up my phone and connected the App, to discover that my earlier fiddling about with the App's settings had indeed been "remembered" by the bike and it was giving only 40% assistance in that mode! I've since had another play - including connecting from a totally different phone and can indeed confirm that the engine settings *are* stored on the bike and that there is no need to keep the App running on the phone all the time you are riding. I'll be moving up to the next level soon and connecting my HR monitor to the App/bike, meaning that the level of assistance will automatically match how hard I am working! (Gotta love this technology!)
