How to Use Troubleshooting Mode on a Whirlpool, Maytag or Amana Washer AND Understand the Codes!

If you've purchased a Whirlpool topload washing machine in the past 10 years, it features a way to figure out what may be wrong with your washing machine. However, its not easy to understand how to get the machine into the troubleshooting/diagnostic mode, OR understand how the code readout works. In this video, I'll show you how to put the machine into the mode AND on-screen explanations as to how to read the codes.
Also, I've included Whirlpool's official code list so you know exactly what the machine is saying as well. This video works for Whirlpool, Maytag, Amana, Admiral (What I use in the video), Roper and a few other styles. THIS DOES NOT WORK FOR A GE WASHER which has a similar display.

Just a note guys, this was one of the first videos I did on my channel. Very informative, thank you. I got the code F1-E0, not sure what that is, do you know? This is only the 2nd time I've used this washing machine brand new and am having issues. Won't go into rinse cycle and clicks a bunch(lock does work it does lock) wash light flashes and nothing happens

@@b.3713 I looked real quick online and the only thing I can come up with is that the machine needs unplugged for 15 minutes then put back in period if that doesn't solve it, I would suggest are running a recalibration on the machine to see what it does

@@bensappliancesandjunk Thanks for the quick response. Hmm, I have done that. I'm doing a cycle right now to see what happens. I did the test where's it runs and checks all the parts and all the lights flashed green, I assume that is good?. How to recalibrate? Wash cycle completed again and its clicking not going into rinse cycle. Wash light now flashing.

My fault/error code is perplexing. It just has all the lights lit and they flash like this; 2 quick flashes and then no li&hts for about the same amount of time and then repeats. HELP

Great Video! Before you do ANY of this though, do a "hard reset" by (1) unplugging the washing machine for >1 minute (2) plug in then rapidly open/close the lid 6 times within 12 seconds. My washing machine didn't even have the lights come on and this was the magical solution.

My Whirlpool had a sensing light flashing. You raise the light up and down six times realfast. Then lay about a six pound weight on the corner of the lid where the lock switch is. That stops the vibration to the lock switch. fixed mine. apparently the lid vibrates and cretes a signl to the lock switch.

This video saved me, from buying my mother a new washer. Thanks so much. Recent winter storm, her pipes burst - shorted the logic board and filled the tub with water. Getting into diagnostic mode and seeing the codes helped me realize, that there was too much water in the wash basin and after removing 3 pitchers of water, the washer started emptying the rest. It now working again.

I watched 2 videos prior to yours and was unsuccessful after repeated attempts with my Amana. When I viewed your video it was explicit in how to turn the dial counter clockwise stopping on each click until stopping at the 12 o'clock position before moving on to the other clicks. I got it on the first try. DO NOT turn the dial quickly as instructed in other videos. Thank you young Ben!! 😀😀😀

I know your comment is a yr old, but hoping to find some info! Whirlpool washer wouldn't drain so I figured out it was the pump ordered had someone take off old one but they couldn't come out new one on as soon as I needed do we called a man that has been working on them yrs and yrs. Well he charged $100.00 and yes it will pump water out but it is making a click somewhat on verge of a grind sound not for long but just while it's switching from after washing to start rinse spin. But it sounds like it's spinning and still swishing like a wash cycle at same time. I have reset it.

HERE'S HOW TO CALIBRATE the Amana after you replace the shock absorbers or other major parts: Go to diagnostic mode as described in this fellows video. All the LED's will be lit. FIRST make sure there is no clothes or water in the basket. Then all you do is ROTATE the control knob until the MIDDLE led is lit . You will have 2 leds NOT-LIT to the left and 2 NOT-LIT on the right. (ignore the RED LED). Now it is in CALIBRATION mode!! all you have to do to ACTIVATE CALIBRATION mode is press the START button. Then the machine will go through some 2 minutes of clicking and spinning the motor. Just be patient and wait for it to do its thing. Then it finally clicks and ALL THE LED's are OFF. That means it is done with CALIBRATION. wash some clothes and see if it is fixed. Mine is fixed but ONLY replacing the shock absorbers DID NOT FIX IT. It must be calibrated any time you replace a major part like that. I found my REPAIR MANUAL book inside the washer on the FRONT panel. Only had to remove the TOP PANEL to get the repair manual.

@@bruhbry831 If you don't calibrate the washer, the washer might not fill with the right amount of water for the load, or the washer might have frequently unbalanced loads then the problems starts

Finally, some real help. Couldn’t find error codes anywhere, except the LCD readout panels. Have an Amana that isn’t spinning. It was involved in a 2’ basement flood. Purchased new motor, cleaned all connections. Will check these codes, thanks to your help! Thank you! Jay.

Bens Appliances and Junk Now looking into the clutch and/or the transmission to see if there are any contacts corroded or anything obvious as to why it isn’t spinning.?🤷🏻‍♂️ I noticed it doesn’t always enter the system into diagnosis every time. I’da never figured this out!

Transmission/clutch were fine, turned out to be the shifter module. Spins good now, but as my luck would have it, now it decided to not fill with water. 🤦🏻‍♂️🙄 Using Ben’s A&J video, it had error codes (I believe it was F11-E4?) for a water inlet temp. failure, and no continuity across terminals of both valves. I ordered a new water inlet valve, they sent one that didn’t fit. I called and ordered the (correct🤞🏽) new one, and not only was it the right one....they sent me 2 ✌🏼of them! Anybody know of any washer that uses 2 inlet valves? .....eh, didn’t think so.😅 Anyways, I replaced the inlet valve, ran diagnostics, cleared the fault codes, and successfully did a load of laundry. fireonice143

Thanks so much for this guide to reading the error codes--SO helpful! From a comment on another video, I learned this valuable bit of info. Mine was right where the commenter said it would be. Before your video, I'd been running diagnostics but couldn't figure out how to read the error codes! "I found that the service manual is included in the washer casing. When in front of the unit, open lid, look into tub (back at yourself) and in the now upper right corner is the service booklet in a plastic bag stuck to the front of the inside of unit. It goes through all of the codes and steps to test the unit."

Hi!!!! This was a GREAT video!! Bookmarked the page for future reference! I'm trying to repair my Mom's Amana NTW4650YQ0 top load washer and the control board was burnt so I bought another board with the same part number off of eBay labelled as a Whirlpool control board. I know that a variety of brands will carry the same type of control board so I was pretty confident as the part number was the same. I installed the new board, plugged in, set the machine to a small load and the machine filled fine then the lid locked and it went into wash mode. So far so good, right? Cycled out of wash mode and went in to rinse mode and then all lights went off so I took the hose off and drained all the water to try again. I tried entering diagnostics based on other KZfaq videos but your detailed video really did the trick and I finally succeeded. I tried manual diagnostics and the machine entered all the cycles and I could hear the drum spinning so the rinse/spin seems to be working fine but I don't know why it's not rinsing during regular use. I also ran the diagnostics and only the "fill" LED flashed so I'm assuming everything is fine. What else can I try?

For an Armana W10420472B the LEDs are f/e 8 4 2 1. Threw me off at first so I thought I'd share that. Got me an F7 E7, spin motor not reaching target RPM. Fun times!

I have this exact washer. We had a small flood in our basement, and after we got the water out and all of that taken care of, our poor washer has been broken ever since. It had a red steady light after the flood, but we got it working again. However, now it wont do a final spin, and we have to do a drain and spin cycle after its done to get it to do a spin to have the clothes not be soaked to put it in the dryer. Im going to run these diagnostics and see what i get. Thanks!

Thanks for the info. My issue is I was cleaning my Amana on the Affresh mode. It filled water to capacity and did not drain. Do I begin where I started and go the counter clockwise 360 and start the diagnostic, or at the Normal? Usually I unplug and resets. Not this time. Please advise. Thank you.

You can start wherever you want on the system. I always just start with the knob at the top because its easiest to explain the modes that way. The system doesn't really care.

Do you have any idea how to reset the washer after a power outage? Every time the power goes out, it takes hours for the washer to start working again, and I can never find the right sequence of events to get to the solution faster. Your help is greatly appreciated.

I have a question can I fill my washing machine with a garden hose I had some trouble with rust in my pipes so I tried to fill it with my hose.but I don't know if the computer recognizes that the machine is full of water already is this doable?

I did the diagnostic test and there lights that went on were the wash, final spin and cycle complete. Is that 7 total? The problem I have is that it doesn't complete the fill and empties the little water that it had.. and it won't continue. I was trying to wash my bedspread so i had it on bulk. I have an Amana NTW4605EW0, which I regret buying in the first place.

Hello I have a question. I put in diag mode...and all I got was first 3 lights flashing. Thats it.. Cycle started for a min..water fine and then stops. Any help. Thank you

Thanks, Ben. This let may know the lid swich is flakey. I got it to go by pushing down on the lid, but will replace it soon.

No matter what I do, follow the procedure, lift the lid 6 times, unplug it, etc, I can never get more than one light to illuminate or blink on my Amana.

- UPDATE: After emptying my washer halfway, which was stuck with a full tub and did nothing, I finally got the lights to blink. Here's what I did: - After doing the counterclockwise full rotation reset on the cycle knob and THEN DOING THE FOLLOWING PATTERN, I GOT THE LIGHTS TO BLINK & DO WHAT HE SAYS. - *Amana: (in the manual): R3×, L1, R1 - But after that I'm stuck because everytime I turn the knob one click I get a different error code set, so that could be like 12 or more. What am I supposed to do with all these codes?!

Good video for explaining how to read error codes!!!! Just wished you would've explained that on some washing machines that wash could actually be the #8 then it would go 4 2 1 and lid lock would act as your #0!!!! I bought a $30 water inlet valve because I read it as an f3 e2 when in fact it was an f7 e5 my actuator.Other than that good informative video.

I've done updated videos on this. Sadly, KZfaq hates the idea of editing videos, otherwise I'd of added more content to it. The problem is that older versions of these washers (like the one in the vid) add the #8 in there, while older ones only went up to 4. I made this video before that was a frequent thing with these style washers.

This should be the top comment. The key values can’t form the last 3 codes on the list, so they’re not a matching set. Just buy a new washing machine. The part you need probably costs half a washing machine anyways

@@josephdixon81 I doubt that unless you need a board and even that on my machine isnt what they want for a new washer! 544 at home depot for mine. I bought two parts for mine to fix it and it cost me less than 50 bucks.

Got a question for you I just bought a mid-priced war Whirlpool like the one you did in your video in the back where you hook up the hoses would it hurt anything if I pull those filters out of the connection where the hoses hook up to so the water will fill faster

Wouldn't hurt anything, but I'd only suggest it if you have decent water that doesn't have a ton of minerals in it.

The real question should be how can we GET RID OF THE LID LOCK?! THERE'S LITERALLY NO REASON TO LOCK A LID THAT'S METAL AND RESTS DOWNWARDLY WHEN CLOSED.
