This is the second part to last weeks video. I decided later, but that same night, that it was not finished and so made this second part! Let me know if there was a version you liked better? It's still very loose and I think turns the painting into a more cohesive whole but at the same time it looses some of that vibrant brush work that was on the previous version!
You have to be careful with any whites with watercolour that they don't get in your bowls of wash and that they don't generally turn your painting to a muted grey.
Hope you enjoyed this second video!

Thanks for the reply Scott. I struggle with this technique as I am a mostly a Yupo painter. As you might know, it’s much harder to do with this synthetic substrate. I do work back and forth between papers but much prefer using various synthetics. Keep up your work. It’s very good.

Initially you managed to capture a lot of turbulent, dynamic energy. The lower half of the painting functioned more like a gouache with the heavy use of white. But hey, water media is water media! They can play together and not every work using watercolor has to showcase the relatively transparent nature of watercolor in every square centimeter of paint. Indeed there are highly opaque watercolors other than white, i.e. Indian red, which is practically like house paint. And they have their place! You maintained wonderful transparency in the sky throughout - really quite an achievement given that much of the sky was dark, turbulent and heavy. You painted that quick and early; it was spot on. In the bottom portion of the painting, there was point towards the end where you had reworked it a lot and really layered on a lot pigment. It no longer read as a roiling sea; it almost felt like a frozen tundra after you laid in that cerulean. But then...you washed out nearly all of the cerulean, both up top and down low, and you washed out that dark area on the far left, exposing a small but potent patch of white paper. Those two moves brought back the dynamic energy in the sea that seemed to have gone mute. In conclusion, I like where the painting finally landed! Bravo, Scott! 😁

It surely take a great artist to admit when he's not satisfied or in doubt for open cam - THATS an attitude we all could learn from .... lets all be as brave and honost ... and admit when we'r in doubt - in the end it makes us all better :-) Thank you Scott - you lift us all. (If you put a coin under your watch strap - underside of wrist - so that it presses against the pulse it will reduce your sea-seakness - old sailer-trick from the North Sea) Happy Christmas / Happy Holidays to everyone "out there" Henrik / Denmark

You have single-handedly inspired me to pick up my brushes again. No other artist on youtube has inspired me like you do! Thank you so much for sharing your gifts! It is so refreshing to see your process and your honesty. I love how brave you are. You could easliy stop wayyyy earlier out of fear of ruining the painting but you keep going and in the end it becomes a much more complex and wonderful piece. You are teaching me that a particular moment in a painting doesn't have to be so precious. You can have other moments in the painting later on that you would miss if you stop too soon. Also, what kind of surface is your work space? I love how you can mix right on your table.

Hi Leah! I’m so pleased I’m inspiring you to pick up your brush and paint! I agree it is scary sometimes to keep going and sometimes it may have been better to stop but there is always another blank piece of paper to try again! I use Aligloss a composite panel from bunnings. I’ll list the link below. It is great as a palette! Good luck exploring! 👍👍

I thought I liked the first version but then when you finish the second version I think it's much better. I like the composition better in the second one. I didn't like the big blue I guess it's cerulean in the center of the painting and when you lifted it out it's much better. I did a painting with you on the first video and I'm going to go back and do some more to mine. Thanks for all your tips and techniques.

Hi Suzan! I agree! It feels more comfortable and complete this way. It is really interesting to do things and then see how I feel about it. That is one of the gifts I give to myself by filming myself, I get to watch as it unfolds and learn from that! It is so different to while I am painting! Glad you like the last version! Cheers Scott

It just takes time with watercolour to get to know the medium and what it can do. I’m sure you’ll get to know it. I think it’s really important to keep things simple when you are finding watercolour hard! Paint with one colour on a small scale and you will get to know the medium. If you want more help I’d suggest you get any books by tony smibert. He taught me almost everything I know! 👍👍
