How to: VW Mk2 Jetta/Golf 1.6TD Timing Belt + Injection Pump Timing

Here is the latest of my videos with this one covering the replacement of the timing belt and fuel injection pump timing on the 1.6 Turbo Diesel 8 Valve JR engine code
This one in particular is fitted to a H plate Mk2 Jetta GL but these 1.6TD engines can be found in a number of VW/Audi/Seat/Skoda platform cars.
Timing belt and tensioner are widely available from all motor factors or to save any confusion head to www.classic-vw...
Prices, parts and delivery are top notch, not affiliated in anyway but I use them regularly for good reason.
Basically
- Line the camshaft cut out horizontally with the cylinder head
- Line the Flywheel diamond with the gearbox pointer
- Line the fuel pump pulley notch with the indicated line on the metal backplate
- Change belt and tensioner
- Rotate engine by hand with locking tools out ensuing nothing locks up
- Remove 12mm bolt at rear of pump
- Rotate from TDC back 1/8th engine rotation
- Zero dial gauge and rotate forward to TDC, Note reading (Stock 0.037")
- Loosed pump mounting bolts and adjust pump, nip up front pump bolt and repeat previous
- Best measurement for optimum performance 0.039" - 0.041"
- Fasten all bolts/nuts/clips
- Put it all back together

are you not supposed to loosen the cam bolt when tightinging the tensioner??

You have to make sure the cold start lever is all the way the cam shaft can be 180 degrees out as well learned that the hard way lol

So the timing belt tensioner. I thought you had to turn it clockwise when tightening the belt not counter clockwise?

Am I mistaking, did you said 0,40 pump lift? I guess it’s an SB engine right?

Stock was 0.037" and it was set to 0.040"

Don't even have a diesel, came here cause i made the mistake of taking my belts off before taking the water pump pulleys off 🤦🏻😂

great video man, I have a 1.6 diesel and my injection pump has been pissing diesel, so i am replacing it with one from the turbo diesel, will the compression be the same for the non turbo diesel, between .039 and .041?

It's probably because I'm an American, but i don't understand what you say (pump timing) when you say turn the engine back a 1/8 turn or until the pointer on the flywheel is about half tenish?

Pump timing is in regards to the actual fuel injection pump on the engine, this can be adjusted advance or retarded in a similar way to an ignition distributor on a petrol engine.

Any idea where you can get these dial guages? I just rebuilt my GTD but i cant get it started, im guessing it could be the pump timing

You should have marked the old belt and the pulleys, then just transfer the marks to the new belt. Makes it a whole lot easier and faster

Thats the worst way to do it, you need to make sure the marks line up and are correct, theres no guarantee that it was right before so to mark it and swap over is wrong
