Community is very important amongst Jiu Jitsu practioners, I also think that certain situations should be looked at closer to avoid ostracizing someone. Most people associate smelly gis with bad hygiene. This is not always the case. Many people suffer from a condition called bromhidrosis, after a shower within an hour my body sweats and emits a bad odor like ammonia. Especially during heavy exercise. I literally take 4 showers a day. I have done treatments, still no change. I know of two other people that were diagnosed with this condition. They are both young attractive females who practice BJJ. Imagine that! I think that many times a person may feel very uncomfortable with attending class as I have. It is very difficult. Everyone talks about the stinky guy, or may say he or she smells. Before you become critical of someone or lump every stinky person in the same category, maybe you should pull that person to the side and find out what's really going on. I just wanted to share my story and give another side of what some people go through. In most cases it may be bad higiene. On the other hand, hygiene might not be the straight forward answer. Thank you for your time

I'm a nutritionist from Europe. Your body smelling bad is not a condition or hygiene. Body smells are caused by imbalances in your body's bacteria and fungi. It is the *FOOD YOU EAT* and the bacteria in your body that are causing the smell. Here's how to cure your bad hygiene: 1. I'm willing to bet that you, from time to time, eat processed meat, red meat, wheat or dairy. What happens when these foods reach the intestines is they ferment, and feed growing colonies of millions of bacteria in your gut. Your body becomes acidic and you develop leaky gut. Your bodys natural and healthy bacteria are then wiped out, and the bad bacteria that feed on lactose and junk food flourish. I used to think my diet was okay, before I understood what these foods do to the body. I eat nothing but fresh vegetables and fruits now (I'd eat some chicken but never red meats, if I wasn't a vegetarian) and I have virtually no body smells. My waste even smells nothing, because it's not crawling with unhealthy bacterial colonies. *Change your diet.* 2. You may also have had penicillin or antibiotics at some point. These treatements kill the healthy bacteria in your gut, so the bad bacteria can flourish. I bet that your gut looks infested, and is a constant battlefield for your immune system, trying to fight off the bad germs. Eat pro-biotic foods, and eat less acidic food. This will slowly, over time, cure your body stink. I promise. You're welcome.

First thing I do at night after BJJ is throw my GI, belt, and rashguard in the washer. I hang out my Gi top and belt. I throw my pants and rashguard in the drier. Every night. Seriously, it's not hard.

what gi do you use?
@waaagh32038 жыл бұрын
mstrshkbrnnn1999 I'm a bigger guy (6'4, 230lbs) and I use Judo Star instead of a BJJ gi, because they just fit better. Though they aren't the exact same as BJJ gis.

Hmmm.... Vinegar with baking soda? That's an acid mixed with a base. I am not sure that your method is as effective as it could be if your did soda with wash and vinegar with rinse.

Some people get butthurt when I tell them they smell bad, but I won't train with someone who smells really bad. If I was in charge, smelling bad would mean you can't train that day, and you can't train until you show up clean. It's a health hazard you are subjecting not only yourself to, but all your training partners. I would no sooner accept someone stepping on the mat in a smelly gi than with staph or ringworm.

You can get away with using about HALF of those amounts.

3waiver, I totally agree that a clean diet can also cause the issue. In my case this isn't an issue.

@Vickmeister9 жыл бұрын
Would it also be okay to handwash it? I don't own a washing machine, so I won't always access to one.
@Wiizardii8 жыл бұрын
+Vickmeister17 Well it shouldn't be that bad, as long as you do it with cold water and long enough to make sure the sweat and all of that funk is gone, I don't think handwash is bad. Besides, back when BJJ was created in like the earlier 20th century, washing machines like this didn't even exist in poorer places like Brazil, Carlos Gracie and the others proabably did it with handwash.

i heard you should not wash your belt with your gi and also use warm water around 40°c in the process and try to clean it like woolen garment because cotton tends to shrink
