Great video, concise and to the point. Exactly what I was looking for. I can't stand these people who try to launch their comedy or talk show careers doing you tube how to videos. Really, if you want a comedy or talk show career then do you video based on that. When I'm looking up videos it's because I have whatever it is in my hands at that moment and I have run into a wall and need a quick hand to get me moving again. That's why I look up things like "How to wire an AC 4 pole illuminated rocker switch" instead of "Switch wiring". I had a need for a specific type of advice and googled a specific question. So I don't need all the extra that so many people throw in their and it's a real turn off. I actually started a business buying and fixing broken down chainsaws and reselling them with knowing a thing about chainsaws just by using you tube videos to help me along. A little common sense, a little mechanical experience and the right videos and your good to go. I make about $1500 a month selling used chainsaws and have for about a year and a half. I give a 30 day warranty with every once and have yet to have one come back. So it goes to show that these how to videos have a place. But people who are serious about what they are doing, like me, I'm wiring lights in my blast cabinet at 1:15am (a 4500 lumen LED strip and a fixture for a 200 watt incandescent bulbs to use as a heater to keep my blast media dry so it doesn't clump up). I have several decades of electrical experience, but am new to rocker switches and the switch isn't marked as to which is which. My meter set to continuity told me the poles matched vertically (hot and neutral were stacked) but doesn't tell me which is the line and which is the load. Therefore I needed a video. And your was the exact thing I needed. I wish more people did exactly what you did just get on camera, explain what they are there to do with a quick intro then get on to the meat of the video. After all that's what we are here for. So thank you so much for doing that and not trying to throw on jokes or play some retarded character that acts like an idiot (that can't be taken seriously) or wasting my time with some long drawn out video about rocker switches that has more info about your dog or your pregnant girlfriend and what you wife has to say about it. Some of these idiots are just to ignorant to be allowed on the web. But Facebook and you tube give them a voice. One I wish they would take away. Anyway, keep up the great work. You just got another subscriber.

Thanks Mike, but... well, I'm just as guilty as the next guy for dropping in the odd gag, etc. I'm not trying to launch any career, but I do enjoy allowing my personality overspill into my videos. Sure, I try to stay on topic, but I'm human. I do what I do for free, so if I can't enjoy myself whilst I'm doing it, then why bother? I guess that's how other KZfaqrs feel too. So like it or not buddy, if you're after free content, you've got to expect that amateurs like me will be imperfect from time to time 😁👍

@@vogman the occasional gag is fine, these people invent whole personalities and do entire bits around it. A 5 minutes explanation takes 30. Your personality spilling over is one thing, the ones in talking about simply waste you time.

Informative video...thank you! (In hopes you're still monitoring this channel...read on!) But 1 question I have (I live in the USA with 120V mains, BTW): I have a 3-hole wall outlet (Hot/Neutral/Ground) near where I want to mount a LED 4-light fixed track light. The light came with an open box/back and 2 sets of pigtails. I'm pretty sure the one set of leads is for a fixed 120V On/Off connection as the other set of pigtails, 5 pairs emanating from a diagram labeled LVLE/SEC/36VDC/ + -- which is for an optional Triac dimmer...?. From the PRI(mary) there is 1 Black wire, 1 White wire coming out one side of the power supply, and a braided copper ground terminating under a mounting washer by - but not on - the power supply. (It's labeled PRI/120VAC with L and N for Black & Neutral wires respectively). I have handy a KCD4 DPST illuminated switch I could use...now...if I was 100% sure how to connect - if I need to - the ground wire from the outlet in the 14/2 Romex (14 AWG w/solid copper ground wire inside sheath) to the bare braided copper ground wire (about 10" long in the lamp box I mentioned above) that I'm using to make a custom length power cord. So, the DPST rocker switch has no pole designated for 'Ground' so I'm wondering if I should/could bypass the switch & wire nut the ground wire - (safely isolated from the Hot & Neutral switch poles) in the 14/2 Romex to the braided ground on the light...or just not use any ground at all. ** I'm pretty sure the Neutrals & Grounds all go to the same lugs in my breaker panel in the basement...I am NOT using a subpanel...FYI) TIA and just hoping you might see & comment on my situation. It's 7:45 a.m. here in Missouri so I have all day to get to the hardware store and buy a standard light switch w/ground terminal and mounting box. Probably will...BUT...I still need to use this switch, if I can, for another project on a vintage window fan (reverse flow circuit switch broke) & would appreciate/value any advice on grounding a KCD4 switch when used with mains/120V power.

Good to know. I was trying to decide if I could run a second load off the second pole. This switch is basically going to be a safety cut off for an iot based smart switch but I've got immersion heaters at the top and bottom of my tank. Was hoping I could switch them both on with one of these but now I'm thinking probably better to just get a dedicated switch for the boost heater. thanks for the great video

Umm. This is not how DPST switches work. You have the wiring right, but the illumination doesn't work how you think it does. DPST stands for "Double pole, single throw". There's no "LED side", both sides work as individual switches and the LED is located between the poles on the load-side. If you connect the mains to the load side then the LED will always be on, regardless of whether the switch is turned on or off. Also it doesn't matter which side is positive and which negative on AC switches.

I need to connect four 14awg wires to one of four poles on the switch. Any wisdom on which type of connector I should use?

Can a similar method be used for a SPDT toggle + a pilot light? It's an on-off-on switch that's non-illuminated so I bought a pilot light to act as my indicator. The switch only has 3 poles (one for each 'on' and 1 for common, the centre one). I wasn't sure how to wire in the pilot light so it illuminates for both 'on' position. The caveat? I'm using the second 'on' position for my highbeam signal, however, I don't want the pilot light illuminated the entire time that the system is armed and awaiting a highbeam signalsssl. I may not be explaining it properly and I might even be psyching myself out. I'm just looking for outside input on this so I can hopefully get a better understanding of how to tackle this project :)

So the left and right sides basically act as two SPST switches together, with the LED across one of them? So I could run a 12v feed through the left side, and have the right side wired to a separate, 5v circuit?

This is purely for aesthetics, I am rebuilding a computer where I would like the cooling fans active before the computer is on. The case is not set up for proper cooling. Some remodeling is required. If not would it be a pole issue where I would require a switch with a dedicated pole for the led?

I'm guessing some sort of one way diode as the light is shorted out when connected to the other side of the switch. It's a confusing one I know

Generally where there's a light indicator of any sort, the light is wired in parallel. This means it doesn't pull any more power than it needs to, is not in the path of the main load, and power will flow even if the light ultimately fails.

I have the same rocker switch with a three wire cord, the wires are Black-Hot; White-Neutral and Green-Ground. I have followed the White to White, Black to Black and Green to Green throughout the circuit, but it keeps kicking out the beaker. What am I doibg wrong?

Why not just put the led on one terminal and have SPST with light?

It's a DPST switch controls two circuits at the same time; either both circuits are ON or both circuits are OFF

Isn’t the led supposed to be on when the switch is off, and vice-versa?

No. On with the power and off without... otherwise you'd be using power to say "I'm not using power" : )

so, i must be doing something wrong then... i have one of these in the tank of a solar water heater... it's 220 v, and also has to flow through a thermostat to power the auxiliary heater (in case there isn't any sun)... so i have 110v and 110v coming from the mains, on the two top terminals - shouldnt' matter which since it's 220... the heater has 2 wires, as does the thermostat, so i have one wire from the heater going in to the thermostat then coming out of the thermostat and going to one side of the switched... the other wire from the heater goes directly to the other side. when i apply power, the light is on, no matter whether it's switched on or off... so i killed the mains power just in case i blew something up! i THOUGHT i had it right, but why does the light stay on? it's either meant to be on all the time and i DO have it wired right, or it's NOT meant to be on all the time and i have it wired wrong - again, they don't come with any directions, and i have essentially the same wiring as you other than having the thermostat between the load and the two bottom terminals. any guesses?

My first thoughts are - are you sure it's the same switch? It might look like it and it might have four terminals, but it could be a difference model that's wired differently - it happens. See if you can see a model no. on it. Secondly, pull the switch from the circuit and test it using a similar set up to what you saw me use - a table lamp or something (not anything expensive). The wiring is either incorrect or the part is not the same as mine shown here. Hope this helps : )

well i actually did a continuity test with a little 12v battery.. apply + and - to the top two terminals, and check for continuity on bottom two... no with switch off, and yes with switch on.. however since it's for 220, the light didn't come on at all... i have a schematic - and i THINK I followed it right... and maybe the light is supposed to stay on and it's just there to find your way in the dark or something...

admittedly it looks 'sort of' the same... red light instead of green but 4 ports in the same configuration - the back looks the same. i'm in canada and don't have anything cheap that runs on 220. all the cheap stuff is 110.. supposed i could rip it apart and try that.

I understand what you mean with the voltage. You were quite right to test on a 12v battery... that would show if the switch worked, but it wouldn't light the neon bulb as you've correctly said. The switch I'm referring to is a KCD4, with four terminals and it’s for 125 / 250 volt. Whether that would work on 110v I'm not sure. They do come in red and green though. I'm thinking it might be a different switch altogether. Mine was bought from Amazon if that's any help. Unfortunately without being there with you, there's very little I can say or do that might help. Sorry. Good luck.

i'd be willing to bet that they ALL come from a factory in china.. doesn't make sense they would all 'look' the same but be wired differently... in concept i'm sure i have the thing wired correctly - power comes in, switch controls it... if switch is on, power goes through thermo, if thermo says go on, heater goes on... it's the light staying on that has me kerfuffled. at this point i may just have to take the front panel off, and take the switch out and diddle with it... maybe in this model the power comes IN on the bottom two... i doubt it though... i also sent a note to the solar tank manufacturer and asked for even a crayon drawing of the wiring, and to answer whether the light is supposed to stay on or not. by the way, 125v works with 110 and 250v works with 220v. i have both stuff, in canada most of the 220v is water heaters, ovens etc.. plus my mig welder and plasma cutter... also have a 3hp dust collection that is 220v but low amp. luckily it doesn't take a great deal of sun to generate hot water in this solar setup, but i'll need to sort it before winter. thanks for the replies.. i will soldier on!
