How to wire an LED toggle switch, "ON /OFF " switch basic. Applies to spot switches, non led switches, basic 3 wire switches (3 prong) . Generally used in 12volt installs for on off switches. It doesn't matter if its going into a Lamborghini , Ferrari or Bentley. Maybe even a Honda. Its all the same electrical.

Its more typical for the 3rd prong to be (-) , but each company does their own thing. If it is infact (+) and your passing (-) through in the toggle side. Then yes, you’ll have to source power from somewhere. However, that all sounds very backward. The internal led will req both (+) and (-) . So. Its more likely that your passing (+) through the toggle side, and needing (-) to finish the supply for the led. Verify the voltage of the toggle side, and then confirm the switches labeling to be safe.

Thank you so much!! Hundreds of millions of videos on KZfaq and no one's bothered to explain how to find out how a switch is wired internally. Not all switches are created equal and I got one with 3 prongs, absolutely no markings (all solid silver colour as well) and no idea which prong is which? I have a multimeter but never really used it, but now I can figure out how my switch works and can finally install some work lights on my SUV to help with reversing on dark forest paths and loading trailers. Thank you again for putting it into layman's terms and not assuming that everyone has a switch with clear markings or just naturally know how they function. 🙏

OMG!! I think you've saved my sanity four years later. Only five 10am and two 15amp fuses later. I needed to connect the ground hooked to the gold tab.

Thank you! Replacing toggle on rv portable macerator pump. Original ran over by friend. Second one melted due to 10 gauge wire being spliced with 12 gauge wire....whoops! Honestly didn't think batteries could cause a motor to put out so much heat. I liked the ease of the led lighted switch and seen that it was available in 12v 30A, as I needed. Got home and looked at it and was stumped. Found your video in a search. I appreciate the diagram and how well you explained. Thank you! My mother is very grateful to you for saving her from having to go out into the night to our house. It reminds her too much of the scary outhouse runs as a child. So glad we never had to experience that. As it was, my feet barely touched the ground when I turned my bedroom light off. I should have been in the long jump of the Olympics.

I've been doing toggle switches for Decades, one important thing I didn't hear anyone doing these videos mention about setting up toggle switches, are the right gage wire, and not to mention to never forget to turn the switches off when not in use😁👍

Preciate it. Good explanation. Im just trying to wire these 6 (3w-12v) LED to 1 switch. I got it now. Thanks. All +'s off lights joined together to 1 terminal on output. 1 wire from fuse box to other input. All grounds together from lights and the ground from fusebox as 1 terminal for ground.

Excellent video, so clearly explained simply because you showed the circuitry involved, couldn't be better. I looked at the top three featured videos on how to wire up a 3 pin toggle switch and they were conflicting in their explanations primarily because they did not explain the circuitry. I was wiring up two 4” LED lights to my atv. I know of ground as green which grounds to the frame. You clarified that ground on 12v is the black wire to the battery. Hense positive and negative... lol. Within the first 30 seconds to a minute into your video I knew what happened

It definitely answered a few questions I have for my current project which is to add two 7" LED light bars to my boat trailer which I'll be able to turn on/off from within my vehicle. Each LED bar is rated at 60 watts, 12v-24v so using a 12v car battery, I calculated each light bar will use 5 amps (60 watts / 12v). I hope this correct. Anyway, I'm planning to run a wire from the positive terminal on my car battery to the "input" on the 3 prong toggle switch, a wire from the negative battery terminal to the "ground" on the switch then a wire from the "load" prong on the switch to a fuse holder then from the fuse holder to the positive on one light bar. I'm going to run the 2 light bars in series so the negative from the first light bar to the positive of the second light bar. Finally, the negative on the 2nd light bar to the negative battery terminal. I do have a couple of questions: 1) does this wiring plan sound correct? 2) what size fuse should I use (5 amp or 10 amp) and 3) what gauge wire should I use? From my car battery to the back of my vehicle is about 16 ft, then from the back of my vehicle to the back of my boat trailer where the light bars will be mounted is roughly another 17 feet.

The wiring plan sounds solid. If you are infact able to run it in series. Then 5amp should do. But if parallel is required q0 amp for sure. These are minimum though, because mote amperage will be required to compensate for wire length and connetion resistance. If it was my design, id go parallel, id use at least a 14awg wire and fuse each output with a 10amp per light. (Havi g them seperated this way, will make led failures easy to trouble shoot and wont take down the whole circuit. Also make sure to fuse the wore from the batt as well matching the total amperage and wire rating. This fuse should be as close to the batt as possible.

This video helped me explain how I will wire my rocker switch to my 12v light in the bus conversion I am building. My 12g wire has an extra wire (3 solid wires inside the wrapping) so I was a bit confused, so now I know I just dont use the copper (3rd) wire from the 12 gauge wire. That may not make sense but your video and a friend helped me understand what needs to be done. :)

I gotcha. Makes sense. Im glad it helped. The 3rd prong is really only needed if your lighting the switch up and even then, that ground can be grabbed locally, doesnt have to be a long wire pulled for it.

You absolutely can. Ground is ground. A direct wire isnt needed from the batt source. A local ground will do it perfectly and simplify the cable pulls.

Thanks for the help I am working on a power box for my kayak/camping and hooked the ground up to one of the outside terminals of the 3 prong led switch.....flaming rubber and glowing wires. Quickly disconnected from the battery and got the wires loose. Exciting night but now after the video I'm sure that will not happen again thanks again wishbi would watched the video b4 attempting myself.

I have3pin toggle with 2wires connected to gether on one pin and the ground on the second pin would this keep killing the battery on 150cc scooter please let me know

Could I do this on a passive circuit? I wired up some acoustic guitar pickups to a toggle switch, now I want to use an led switch instead, can I just use a 9 volt to power one passively using this same method?

So does the logic apply to the scenario where im running a ground out of an accessory and then from switxh to chassis. I do not care if the light is illuminated but need to ground my HD im afraid will short in its current state.
