nice i always wondered how this worked.. i saw one installed at an old job i use to work at and would control a light and the sort but the idea how it worked just killed me. think one would just know but not always the case unless seen. and i see also into using T12 tubes like i do. i still prefer them even if its the old or new electronic ballasts. at least here can still buy them as not banned from sale yet so i been stocking on them and ballasts when i get the chance.

Nicely done. Good explanation on all the components and how to do the wiring. On cover plate for this outlet box, why are there only two screws, one mounted at the 1 o'clock position the the other opposite at the 7 o'clock position? Why not screws at all four corners? I noticed this on the four outlet boxes I have in my home and it looks like two holes are not tapped to accept any screws.
@DIYHomesteadProjectsDIYHP10
@DIYHomesteadProjectsDIYHP10 2 жыл бұрын
Good question, I don't know why the cover plate only has two tapped screws. That's just the way they are made. My guess would be for cost savings and time savings for professional instillations but that's just a guess.

Thanks for this video. This is easy enough to understand when wiring up new switches and outlets but it becomes difficult to track down how my house is wired. If you have another outlet that is after this outlet on the same circuit, how is this wired? I'm assuming you can tap into the hot wire on the outlet or the switch to get power to the additional outlet, correct?
@DIYHomesteadProjectsDIYHP10
@DIYHomesteadProjectsDIYHP10 2 жыл бұрын
Yes Luther, that is how I would do it in that situation. Remember all outlets down line from where you put the switch will be controlled by the switch.

I have a two-switch light switch inside my garage at the top of the steps leading out from my foyer. One switch controls 2 garage ceiling lights. The other, the 2 lights outside my garage on either side of the door. I have no idea if any of this wiring involves my automatic garage door opener or the automatic light that kicks on when I pull my car in or walk by the sensors. I need an electrical outlet at the bottom of the steps leading up to my foyer so I can place a nightlight there. I keep falling because I can't see the bottom step. It's a pain to turn the ceiling lights on to take something small into the garage or to start my car and backtrack to turn the ceiling lights off. Any good videos on that project? This video is excellent, but I have more electricity involved, especially if the garage door opener and sensor light for it are involved. Any videos that might help me with that? Of note, nooo electrical experience.

Basic question: is there any concern about the uninsulated ground wires making contact with the bronze or silver connection points on either the switch or the outlet when tucking/compressing everything into the box? If that contact occurred would it create a short?
@DIYHomesteadProjectsDIYHP10
@DIYHomesteadProjectsDIYHP10 2 жыл бұрын
I don't have any concerns about that. Some people put a couple of wraps of electrical tape around the outlet or switch to cover the bronze and silver connections. If contact did actually happen it would create a short and trip the breaker I would think.
@jackpine4347
@jackpine4347 2 жыл бұрын
The easy solution is to use insulated green wire, as opposed to bare copper. If the bare ground contacted the neutral screws, it would simply function as normal, since that still results in a ground to the panel. Now, if the bare copper contacts the hot wire, that is a short circuit, and it will trip the breaker. With bare grounds it is a good idea to wrap the outlet and the switch with electrical tape, but as I said, using insulated ground wires is a better, safer solution.

@3:51 So this is a non-GFCI outlet, and i'm noticing which screw you're placing your black/ power wire. From what I understand, in non-GFCI outlets there is no "line and load" screws, and instead, both screws are the same. Which is what I assume is the reason you're connecting the black/ power wire here, to what WOULD be the "load" screw (if it were a GFCI outlet). My question here is, if this WERE a GFCI outlet, which screw would you connect that black/ power wire to? To the Line or the load screw? Or it still doesn't matter? Edit: ___________ Also: I see this is a wire-up for an outlet/ light switch combo where the light switch turns the outlet on and off. Do you have a video of one where the light switch DOESN'T turn the outlet off, and the outlet is continuous power regardless of if the switch is on or off? And if not, could you please create that video soon? Please let me know asap. Thanks.

I don't think it matters where the incoming wire is placed but I'm not positive about that. When the switch is on the two terminals are connected and when it's off they are disconnected. Just make sure when you mount the switch, the switch is oriented correctly.

my question is how do I add an outlet across an opening door area? We bought a house where there are only 1 or 2 outlets in the family/living room, only one in the bathroom which is in the mirror and none on any walls and the bathroom is very large. I need to do this myself since we can't afford an electrician. I am very handy!

Don't feel bad Jamie, I can't afford an electrician either! Since I'm not an electrician I am not qualified to give advice on what you should do. I only show what I have done for my situation. I would guess you're probably going to have to either go up to an attic or down to a crawl space to get across and open door area. Good luck with your project!

. Depends on how door is framed. You could remove the moulding and run wires in gap around door then cut outlet opening in drywall and fish wire cable to door opening channel. Another way is by using wire mounding on the surface. There is usually only one outlet in bath because of being close to water. Make sure you install GFI receptacle .

Picture this: At your switch you have an incoming 14/2 feed cable (black and white wires) and a 14/3 cable (red black white) that runs from the outlet to switch, at your switch grounds and white wires get tied together. Red wire goes to any gold terminal and the 2 black wires get connected w a 3rd pigtail you need to create which goes to the 2nd gold screw. At your outlet, ground ur device and box if metal. Connect your white wire to the silver screws on the outlet. Connect the red wire to the gold screw that corresponds with which face you want switched (top or bottom) than connect black wire to remaining gold screw. this last part is important, you’ll need to locate the bridge that connects the 2 gold screws on the side of your outlet and break the tab completely off with a small pair of pliers. Hope that helps a bit

A note should be made that the Ampacity of the switched circuit should be checked before doing this as most modern lighting circuits are wired with 14ga wire which is not rated for circuits for outlets which are wired in 12ga with a 20 amp breaker

That's a good point you make Lawrence. The reason I did it as I did is in the future I may come out of this box and carry on down the line with another box. I figured this would make that real easy to do by adding another wire under each wire nut to attach the new line.

@oldtimefarmboy617

The black wire is CALLED the hot wire. Electricity (direct or alternating current) must have a complete circuit to work. Without a complete circuit the electricity will not flow. The neutral wire is called neutral because it connects to the center of the coil in the transformer while the two hot wires connect to both ends of the coil in the transformer. Any circuit that connects to both hot wires in the distribution (electric breaker) panel will have 220 volts and any circuit that connects to one hot wire and the neutral wire will have 110 volts. The neutral wire is every bit as hot as the hot wire. The neutral wire has just as much current flowing through it as the hot wire.

Maybe a better title for your video would be “ how to wire a switched outlet” . If you take your title at face value, it sounds like you are tapping an existing switch which only has a feed and output hot and ground but NO neutral which makes it impossible to install an outlet. The video and concept are nice, but the title is a bit misleading, thumbs up just the same 😊.
@DrD6452
@DrD6452 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I thought this video was going to show me how to do just that but alas it was simply for a switched outlet and not for turning a switch into a plug which as you say can't be done because there is no neutral wire.
@seanconnell5362
@seanconnell5362 3 жыл бұрын
I agree with the title being misleading. But an outlet CAN be chained off a switch if you run 3 conductor wire to the switch and use the red and black to the switch while connecting the white to the neutral at the previous junction.

It was all clear, but was the goal to have the top receptacle the switched one? because that looks like the case. Isn't it usually the bottom outlet that is switched? One last question: does code require the switched hot wire when switch is in the on position to be red? For DIY, it seems a shame to buy the 14-3 wire just to get that short red wire....thanks UPDATE: I also missed the part where you broke the connecting tab on the hot side between the black screws...

Stanley, I'm not sure exactly what you are trying to do but this site has a lot of diagrams for wiring a GFCI outlet so hopefully it will have a diagram for what you are trying to do. www.do-it-yourself-help.com/gfci-outlet-wiring-diagrams
@DIYHomesteadProjectsDIYHP10
@DIYHomesteadProjectsDIYHP10 Жыл бұрын
Yes you can still use the switch with that outlet. Look at the back of the GFCI outlet, one set of screws will be for "line" and the other set for "load". There should be some labeling and maybe some arrows pointing to the corresponding screws. If you are wiring it up like I did, the power (black wire) coming from the switch to the GFCI outlet should go to the brass colored "line" screw on the GFCI outlet. If you are installing any outlets beyond the GFCI they will be connected to the "load" screws and those outlets will be protected by the GFCI protection. So basically power coming into the GFCI from the breaker box is connected to the "line" side and any outlets being fed power from the GFCI outlet will be connected to the "load" side. Hope this makes sense.

@@DIYHomesteadProjectsDIYHP10 I might have to buy a switch with only two screws on it like you have. The three screws threw me. I read the instructions for the GFCI and understand about the load side and line side. I wanted to run the GFCI and switch to my swimming pool pump, so it is protected. I want to turn the pump on and off instead of always using the little switch at the back of the pump. I want to be safe. Thanks for your Help. Why do they put 3 screws on one switch. I was just wondering about this or do you need 3 screws for another type of wiring job. Please let me know, Thanks for all of your HELP and comments. !

I understand now. I believe a switch with three screws (two light brass and one dark brass or black) is made to be used as a three way switch. With the switch in one position it puts power to one of the light brass screws. Flip the switch and it puts the power to the other light brass screw. You could still use it in this situation. One of the screws should be marked as common, that screw is where the incoming power goes. Then use one of the other screws to power the outlet. Which one you use depends on what position you want the switch to be in when it's on or off. (The common screw is usually dark brass, copper or black. The other two screws are usually light brass color.)
