How to wire multiple switches and outlets in one electrical box. BE SURE ALL POWER IS OFF BEFORE DOING ANY ELECTRICAL PROJECT!
This 3 gang electrical box example (2 switches and one outlet) will show you how I brought power from an electrical panel, ran it into a 3 gang electrical box and then out to ceiling lights, can lights and 2 receptacles.
I am not a licensed electrician but I hope this will give you some basic practical information that will help you understand how I wired my barn.
If you are not comfortable working with electricity I encourage you to hire a licensed electrician to do your work. Electricity can be very dangerous to work with!

Thanks man. I followed your exact directions and it turned out perfectly. Edit: it’s hard to splice 5 wires together but I made it happen by just cutting off the ends and making them even.

Great video. Let's say u have another outlet or outlet and light combo switch instead of 2 light switches. What should u do. I'm assuming need another white connected to those, like the first outlet u connected

Pretty good. Running NM or Romex in a conduit is not the way to go. Clean job on the wiring though. I prefer a crimp on the ground wires, no pigtails needed that way. I do like that you pigtail the connections as opposed to connecting on the back of an outlet. I would run a deep metal box and plaster ring as opposed to the plastic box designed for Romex type wire.

Hi. Are ground wires necessary inside a plastic box? Also, I'm confused as to why so many pigtails were used here. For example, couldn't the grounds wires have just been as easily attached to each individual unit? I've never wired a box before, so I hope I can get an answer. Thanks.
@keithharrington4595
@keithharrington4595 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, you could loop the grounds around the individual terminals. It would be far easier to pigtail. It would be very difficult to stuff all those wires into the box. It would be very likely that one would touch a hot wire on the switch next to it. You would not find it until you test or apply power and the breaker never resets.

Would you have to have a GFCI instead of a basic outlet in that building?
@helpinguonline
@helpinguonline 2 жыл бұрын
Check with you local building inspection office (if you have one). Most areas require GFCI protection in outbuildings and garages. They will help protect you if there is any chance of moisture in your building.

Is this really accurate with all these pigtails? That just seems much more dangerous than just doing jumpers but I'm no electrician.
@keithharrington4595
@keithharrington4595 2 жыл бұрын
The "pigtails" are jumpers. In this case they allow easier wire management to fit everything into the box.

Can we bring power from light fixture instead of bringing power from electrical panel?
@seabcarolan
@seabcarolan Жыл бұрын
Yes, assuming the power from the light fixture is not already controlled by a switch and the number of total outlets, lights and devices etc. on that breaker does not exceed 80% it's rating, i.e. 15 amp breaker total load must be less than 12 amps.

And since the neutrals are pig tailed and going to the lights directly you don't need them on the switch as that's over kill?
@keithharrington4595
@keithharrington4595 2 жыл бұрын
There are zero neutral terminals on the switch. The NEC prohibits switching the neutral. The only device that got a neutral was the recepticle. The grounds are required on each strap, each device.
@xringeagle

Why connect all the grounds together and then pigtail to the switches rather than connecting the grounds from each line directly to the switches?

Have you tried WAGO nuts?
@helpinguonline
@helpinguonline 2 жыл бұрын
Not to date... my sense is the old twisting of wires with a wire nut provide a better and more secure connection... not to say I wouldn't use them in the future though. The push in nuts sure look quick and easy

Isn’t it against code to mess with a boxes fire rating? Drilling a hole completely throws away its rating

I'm a bit confused about the grounds. Why splice 3 grounds, to one pigtail, then split it back into essentially the same original 3 wires? Why can't you just ground the 3 on the switches/receptacle to begin with?
@vero0992
@vero0992 2 жыл бұрын
I just had to do this today so it's fresh. You need to ground the switches for your lights/etc to the line ground, AND ground each Romex line going back out to each light/fan/whatever device to the line ground. If you just connect the ground for the switches to the line ground, you leave the Romex cables back to the devices out of the grounding equation. I hope that helps, pain to get it all in the box.

I don't think you can drill holes or run conduit for plastic boxes. A 3 gang metal box and emt conduit would be my choice. All the other boxes should also be metal. There also is some controversy about running Romex in conduit as opposed to running individual THHN wires.

Ted, 2020 NEC 547 for agricultural buildings EMT is not "permitted". Nonmetallic everything is permitted. So if a storage building....just like a garage. I am sure the building guys will make that call. I am not sure from the video.

For all:. Be careful of you verbage. If the building is just storage, it needs GFCI recepticles like a garage (all recepticles even 250 v) i.a.w. 2020 NEC 210.8.(A).(2). If it is an agricultural building it falls under 2020 NEC 547 for agricultural buildings. GFCI for 120 v outlets but may require wet covers for switches and recepticles and it discusses approved raceways (piping). And more.
