In this video, I share some of my simple techniques for writing with purpose and focus. These are a few of the things I've learned so far in my journey of taking writing a bit more seriously. I think they'll be pretty useful for other new writers who know what they want to write but don't quite know how to go about it in an effective way.

love these videos. I tend to write using a mixture of fact and fiction but I always get caught up trying to tie everything together

I love this approach as well. I enjoy particularly fleshing out the album concept and using the limitations of it to spark creativity amongst all the individual tracks for it. Helps when you just got a lot of time and flexibility with the production of it. And having someone to bounce ideas off with is so important! Catching things in your blindspot through feedback of someone you trust is a great way to grow your comfort zone. Another fantastic video brother! I definitely intend to check out that song when you decide to release it :D

do you think that getting the melody for the song is important I feel like there is no point in writing till I get the melody down first because the melody will dictate the words I use not all words will fit in a certain type of melodic structure

hmm. you're exactly right. honestly, its sort of a chicken or the egg first kinda thing. getting the melody is super important for sure because it can influence what you're going to write however I'd say the opposite is just as likely. sometimes a melody and soundscape can be super powerful when its structured around the story (new magic wand by tyler is a great example). I would say it really comes down to what you prioritize most within the song. the one thing I'll say though, is that I find it easier to adjust lyrics to fit a melodic structure than it is to adjust a melodic structure to fit lyrics. but obviously both can be done. that's a long winded way of saying, if going melody first works for you definitely do that but don't get too far ahead without considering the story it will be interacting with. the two always should be deeply intertwined!
