How to: Z car/ Datsun oil pump drive spindle swap in-car

4 жыл бұрынIn this episode I demonstrate how to swap the Datsun oil pump drive out and install it and the oil pump while the engine is in the car. Applicable to all L series Z cars and perhaps other L series datsuns.
I’m completing this exercise as part of a 280ZX turbo distributor swap to my Megasquirt MS1 ignition controlled Datsun 240z L28 stroker.
The splined turbo oil pump drive spindle I’m using is from Kameari Race Works from Japan. I found this product is a cheaper alternative to the Nissan OEM when importing to Australia.

just did this last night, gotta say it was easy, but much more irritating because my car is an automatic with the oil cooler lines going to the radiator.

If it's pointed up that means valve is open don't you want lobes facing down

When the three holes in the crank gear are on top its top dead I'm so confused so many videos show lobe being downfacing down strait down I been watching videos for 5 hrs strait now I find this one and your saying lobe must face up to be top dead

If I line up the oil pump drive spindle into the pump properly and have the engine on TDC #1, is there any reason to remove the distributor?

I believe you will need to remove the distributor. I do not think the spindle will stay in place with the oil pump removed and will slide out. A common trick is to remove the distributor and clamp a set of vice grips to the oil pump drive tang to stop the oil pump drive falling out.

@@kyushaspeed so, the spindle turns the distributor and the oil pump. Sounds like there isn't anything to gain by not removing the spindle. cleaning and greasing needs to done anyway. Thanks for your response. My oil pressure is somewhat low, I haven't put a gauge on the engine but since this car is new to me I think I should replace the pump and sending unit just as a precaution.

How do you prime the pump after its installed?

I filled the pump with oil prior to installation.

Cylinder 1 lobes up on an Nissan SOHC will have the valves closed on the power stroke ready for a cylinder 1 ignition event. If you use lobes down the engine will be on the intake/exhaust cycle which you do not want to use for ignition alignment.

@@kyushaspeed we passed smog with 120 on nox from 3 k had to redo oil pump and time the thing
