What do you do when it feels like your dreams are too big? That you're so far from where you want to be? How do you make progress every day, so that one day you're living your dream life?
This video is all about the journey we've been on over the years - from living in a van to now building out our homestead with a toddler. Don't get me wrong, sometimes life feels OVERWHELMING living on the land (especially in winter) but what is so special now compared to maybe 7 years ago is how many tools we have to recenter ourselves. Jump back into the headspace that is more helpful to making progress and feels so much more grounded.
I really hope you enjoy this chatty video :) If you want more like these in the future let me know!
Big love,
Dana, Lou, Max & Freja

I've been watching your channel since the van build, and I can't express how much it's been helpful to me. I'm almost always accompanied by anxiety and depression, sometimes can't leave my bed etc. But seeing Dana and Lou out in the world, learning new things as they go, adventuring in all sorts of places, situations, living arrangements, family formats... even the way they speak, it's all very grounding, calming and it makes me reflect on the things that help me, that have meaning to me and to where I want to be in the future. Sorry for rambling, but to be honest I feel the urge to comment this in every video you guys post haha thank you for the words, authenticity and care poured into every video. Through the years I've learned to enjoy cleaning my house, even if all I can manage in the day is washing the dishes, or taking a walk and stretching. You are appreciated. Have a wonderful weekend, everyone! Ps: you might like the song Orange Blossoms by Goldford!

Amanda, thank you so much for leaving this comment ❤ I cant fully express how much it inspires us right back to read. We also have doubts sometimes, and reading your comment helps keep the spark within us bright, too! Thank you!! Hope you have a wonderful springtime :) And how cool, will check out that song!!

Team work really does make the dream work. Watching you both clean the office and chop the wood not just motivates each other but the task is done quicker. It also allows Max to spend quality time with mum and dad. Love how Max understands everything. He will be talking in no time. How many kids get to experience wild deer play? It is all about balance and taking life slow and enjoying each day. Thank you for including us in your beautiful life. ❤

I love this. I think we tend to think that if something is a dream, it has to arrive fully realized to maintain that dream-like quality because the little steps to get started don’t seem as grand. This was really helpful. I enjoy these conscious looks into your way of thinking about life.

starting projects in winter is so hard, no matter the size!! sometimes i wish the new year began during the warmer months!! but the payoff is worth the struggles.-- learning about and starting the 12 week year this time for my goals, however, has really helped me start small on the big project i hope to accomplish this year.

Oh, Dana, you are an excellent typist. My mother was a writer, and she typed with her eyes closed, when you get at it especially as good as my mom and you you don't have to look at the keyboard. I've always envied that!

I was surprised to see you clean with single-use paper towels; in South Africa we use cloths/rags (we call them “lappies”) which we wash and re-use. Might be something you want to consider. 🧼 Absolutely love your channel. Thanks for such quality and heartfelt content. 💛

Those are wonderful they sell them at street fairs all over California too, and they're so cool they snap together so that they can make an actual roll and they're what completely washable and they're beautiful colors but you can actually put them on a paper towel dispenser, because they come in rolls!

@9:27 I needed to hear that. I have been bedridden with severe ME (aka Chronic Fatigue Syndrome) for several years. I have been stabilizing lately and I'm able to putter around the house and do most chores again, and I have even been able to start doing small amounts of work on my computer. I want to get some formal graphic design training since I feel that would be a really flexible type of work and hours to do for me. But like you said, the name of the game with this condition is doing things really gradually and sustainably so I don't get back into a push-crash cycle where most of my time is spent in recovery. Thank you for sharing that insight.

Something occurred to me as you were talking. Subscribers who are 60+ (you do have 60+ subscribers!) will have more of an innate memory that you get up and work as hard as you can all day knowing that the work you do has a direct impact on your safeguarding your family's comfort. It was a time before the mindset was one of more choice. It was a time where what you did or did not do in a day could make a difference to the general comfort and well-being of your family. (Will we have enough food if I don't stay on top of this HUGE garden...?) As one of those 60+ subscribers its taken me a long time to be mindful in the choices I make, being intentional to make decisions on the current reality not the historical reality. does this make sense? I flipped your order in my life. I've spent a couple decades working on my "homestead" and have made great progress (except for the couple years we lost when our farmhouse burned down 2 years ago) Now, my treat for slogging thru all the stuff that comes with and in the aftermath of a house fire is to kit out my car for car camping. I'm in Ohio, so this spring, around garden work, I will be exploring the local state parks, etc with my car camping setup. And work on what this new season of life should look like. Congratulations on all your hard work-pretty sure you won't get 30 years down the road and regret it!

This was so interesting to read and mull over! So sorry to hear about the house fire though, can't even begin to imagine. Wishing you the most beautiful time with your car camping trips in the local state park!! ❤

I've loved your meditations so so much. It's always been difficult for me to meditate, but I've been doing it at least once a week with your meditations. I love your calm voice and the breathing exercises. My one comment would be that I'd love for the visualizations to last a bit longer? Not a lot, just a couple of minutes, the end feels a bit rushed, sometimes I actually replay it twice just to stay there a bit longer.

I love the way you interact with Max and how you speak to him and he understands at such a young age! as someone without kids that is so amazing to see, what did you do to get to this place with Max? i want to do more research but i dont know what i would start to google. children are so intelligent and as a future mother i want to embrace that with my child as you have with Max

I speak baby talk to babies when I want to make them feel comfortable but I usually, and I've been in child care for over 40 years, speak to them as though they understand every word. I have been criticized for this, but I was raised like this. When I couldn't find the word in my mind my mother would say look it up. There is really nothing from keeping children from having an astute vocabulary. Some may, some may not, but if they show a proclivity for advanced language for their age, encourage it! I have been in childcare for many years, and I believe in constant upbeat interaction, and a whole lot of SINGING. 🎶

😊❤ I totally needed to hear this today. I'm one that has such an overflowing plate of things I'm not in control of, however responsible to get done. A drunk driver hit 5 cars mid December, mine being one. As I've had other similar injuries over my life they want to minimize my new injuries as well my 02 car will likely be totalled. I cannot afford payments on another car..... that is only 1 of 50 such issues. But one tiny task at a time, you're right, eventually things appear done.
