Hi folks! We received some feedback on our last video where we used the Kubota x1100c RTV to take firewood from the Hakki Pilke firewood processor up to the field for piling. In this video, we used the dump trailer for the same purpose and then the Komatsu backhoe. We discuss the pros and cons of each, reviewed the maintenance repairs that we recently completed on the backhoe and talk about what the future may bring!

Hello Jason, different strokes for different folks, trailers rut up land bad when loaded, They don’t have a place on our farm, we just use the big Bobcat bucket on the tractors work fine. Take Care 🚜🪵👍🏼🇺🇸

Hey Jason, On Outdoors with the Morgans Channel they use their dump trailer at the end of the processor. When ready to stack, they tilt the trailer but keeping the backdoor closed. This puts the wood at just the good height so they do not have to bend down to pickup the pieces. They can do that because the doors of their trailer are lower than yours. Your doors are taller but if you opened your trailer doors and found a way to install a temporary lower back gate, maybe with 2x8s, you could probably achieve the same results. As you stack, you can pull the trailer forward to keep close to the work area. Just my 2 cents to try and save your stackers back. Cheers

Good thinking Yves! I’m now thinking about metal racks that could hold 1/3 of a cord each. Would be expensive to build but would last forever! Chain them back to the backhoe bucket to control them when dumping on the trailer for final delivery….

Hey Jason ! The Komatsu is looking sweet. Currently I’m bringing my 2000 Case Skid Steer back to a new life . The price of commercial equipment or anything for that matter as greatly increased . Again another great video cheers my friend 👌🏻🔥🇨🇦

Thanks! Replacing commercial equipment right now really isn’t an option. I think the Komatsu needs to go back to the shop next year for a little more love and more paint!

It is difficult to see your entire layout - but it seems that if your processor and log yard were nearer to your stacks you would save time. The part that slows down the stacking process is all the bending to pick wood up from near and on the ground. It wears you out and takes extra time. I'd move your equipment closer to the stacks and use a tall trailer or the X1100C so you can quickly move the wood from the processor to right beside the stacks and just reach for the wood without bending over. I use our Gator and X1100C and the height to the bed is perfect and makes stacking really quick!

I used to stack the wood in the main yard close to the machine. Now that I have nice crushed rock in the yard, I don’t want the mess of the wood (bark and such) on it so I stack in the field!

Hi Jason only thing that I would change is make changes to the bucket, make it a lot bigger, and then drive right up to the stack and stack it right out of the bucket, you can put the level of the bucket at a good height and not have to bend. I find picking up the firewood off the ground is to hard on your back. Cheers my friend.

Thanks Gerry, I thought the same thing. If the bucket had extenders for firewood and I could go from 6 to 3 buckets per cord, it would be a nice improvement!

Fixing oil leaks is important, fluids are expensive. If you could leave the doors open on the dump trailer and put a plank or plywood across the back so it isn't so high and stack right out of the trailer, less bending over. As far as the bags go,I have seen several firewood channels use them, but not for long. I don't think they are a very good option.

Thanks for the feedback Ole. Maybe steel racks that hold 1/3 cord is the answer? Very expensive though…

Yes, fluids are expensive. And they are not meant to leak into the nature... We often buy firewood per m³ here in Finland so smaller loads are often in bags. If the "workflow" is right they are a great way to store and deliver firewood. The bag hanging on a rack with a pallet under it, fill it and then move/stack/dry/deliver on that pallet. No need to touch the wood at all. The less "marks of mittens" there are on the wood the better the revenue... I don't know how some count when they make money stacking firewood after processing it. When the firewood is processed into a bag (here they are around 15€ if you buy more) that's it. The bag out of the way, the next in and more wood through the processor. Changing a bag takes a couple of minutes, stacking firewood takes longer time when you could be making firewood...

Stacking definitely takes time. It was a good way for the boys to make some cash when they were younger but now they are getting grown up!

Nice backhoe. I’m sure it will last for years. Good repairs done. One thing about a machine like that is, not hard to sell, if you ever wanted to and I doubt that you will. I think those bags would be a nuisance. And costly for sure. I doubt anybody here in PEI would pay for a bag that they really can’t use after the wood is out. And at the price of firewood now, not as easy for people to buy. Only thing with the bag is the people could take it back to get refilled. 🤷🏻‍♂️. No easy answer. Have a good day. Nicer weather coming, hopefully. I’m still working at my Fiona wood. Hehe. Next step, remove the brush.

Hang in there on the Fiona clean up. The only way the bags will make sense for us is if they last for 3 or 4 seasons and allow us to avoid piling. I would simply fill them, store them for drying and then dump them out on my trailer for delivery. Then store the bags to use again the following year…

Thanks Larry. When we pile, we always measure a little longer and higher to make sure full cords are delivered. Loose loading and measuring opens up lots of opportunity for error but I’m going to do a trial!

Reducing the handling of firewood is where the process can be optimized. I would suggest to cord the wood while it's still in the bucket, to the proper height for handling. But that involves stopping the wood processor while you cord the wood... so nothing is easy there! I think you have a good setup as is. Thanks!

Unfortunately the doors on the rear of dump trailer are solid to the top. On mine, I two feet of solid door. The upper two feet are expanded metal and are just bolted on. When I need to stack firewood, I remove the upper section which allows me to stack right out of the back of the trailer. We tilt it up as we go and there is no bending over so it’s easy on the back. My trailer will hold 2.5 cords of loose firewood. The bucket on your backhoe seems pretty effective without using the dump trailer. I’ve been looking and bags and IBC tote baskets. There both expensive. My market is similar to yours- the cost to profit margins are tight. Not sure there worth the money. You know what will work for you.

Pretty good idea with the pallets… if a guy had a carousel coming off of the processor chute, someone could pile on the pallets while another person ran the processor!

Does your conveyor adjust down to almost level? You could have to conveyor feed on to a table at slow speed and someone could fill pallets off the table.

I didn't realize the doors on your dump trailer were so tall. The other firewood channels I watch have shorter doors on their dump trailers and they keep them closed while the dump bed is raised and they can easily reach over the doors to grab the firewood. The trailer is also backed up really close to the firewood stack so there is minimal steps to stack it. The method also allows you to remove any chaff and debris from the firewood and keep it in the dump trailer. Those face cord firewood bags are problematic. They are easy to load off the processor, but after that they are a hassle move and they are not that easy to empty.

I’m a little sceptical about the bags. I’m going to try 2 or 3 but like you say, I bet they will dump hard. The backhoe will handle the weight but I wouldn’t want to rip the bags. They are expensive!

I was about to suggest the same about the dump trailer! I also agree with you, the bags are nice to fill. But the wood does not dry well and they are not convenient when it comes time to sell the firewood.

Well try a 35.00 deposit on bag when they buy a bag of firewood so if they return bag they deposit back or will be able just trade out bagels as long it’s return in good shape take picture of bag with customer so they’ll know no arguing if bag gets tore

@@OakMountainAcotts I love watching you and family wiring together you don’t see it much anymore. I think it will work out just fine. Need to make a frame to hold bags put it at end of conveyor have bags set an all pallet so you can move it with your tractor when it gets full then find your spot where you can put in pallets and put them out there so they can dry for a while and they should be ready to go
