One of the best things about this show (I heard it mentioned in either an interview or a behind-the-scenes thing) is that the creators of this show try to script it in a way that whoever you are currently watching, you root for. So we root for Johnny and want him to succeed, but we're also still rooting for Daniel, and Miguel, and Robby, and Sam, etc. etc... It took a source material with very obvious black and white heroes and villains and turned it into a show where the audience is invested in the success and happiness of all of its characters.

Well, that's what comes of stories that have textured, deep and notable bad guys, and Karate Kid was second only to Star Wars in that regard. This was a joy to us old fart Generation-X types.

@@ferallemur I am curious what they are going to do with Kreese. Johnny always had redeeming qualities that they were able to leverage to make him a more likable character, but for Kreese I have a hard time imagining that I am going to come out of season 2 with the same sort of respect and understanding of where his character motivations are coming from. I have a feeling that season 1 was designed to set up Johnny, Miguel, Daniel, and Robby as the protagonists and then bring in Kreese to set him and Hawk up as the antagonists of the series.

This is based on amazing writing by these 3 guys.

For Johnny, it would've been an empty victory regardless of the outcome. Robby could've won that match, and it would only prove that he doesn't need his father to help him out. However, because he lost, I'm sure Johnny was thinking, "I won and redeemed myself in society... but at what cost?"

@@crpsaiyan let's not forget he turned his student into Bullies and cheated. He wanted it fare this time. It's a realization of what he has let him self be. So in this sense it is way more than about the win and defeating his son. It's how it went about and what his teachings were doing.

@@iojoj2450 I don't believe Johnny did so intentionally. His attitude was toughen up the geeks and nerds. Unfortunately, the message was misinterpreted by the students. But yes, Johnny should've been in control of that. It goes back to what Mr. Miyagi said, "there is no such thing as a bad student. Only a bad teacher." I honestly don't think Johnny realized what he did, until his students viciously went after his son in the tournament -- Hawk attacking his opponent from behind, and Miguel using Robby's injury to his advantage.

@@crpsaiyan it wasn't intentional, but it was inevitable. What did he do to stop it from happening? How was anything misinterpreted? The problem lied in the philosophy itself. Johnny is well intentioned, but that doesn't change that he didn't realize that he was the villain and why he was. This is best reflected in his recounting of Karate Kid and how his failings sowed the seeds for everything else.

@@PrimeofPerfection One could argue that he chimed in at the 11th hour as they were battling. To your point, it was just too little too late. It wasn't until his own son was in the line of fire that he came to his senses.

Lets not get far into that, usually a show featuring characters beloved n well known comes back into view the novelty of seeing characters we all liked will rub off and you dont want to see a series where the stories become lame and cliche filled. As long as the stories are well written n engaging i will watch it till to the end.

Both Johnny and Daniel are very flawed good guys, Johnny had a bad teacher which made him agressive, and Daniel became very vindictive, both are trying to achieve good things and lack the balance that Mr. Miyagi's Karate had.

@bathasar cerodos,Totally agree with you, maybe in the later on seasons, maybe Johnny and Daniel solve there differences and work together to achieve that balance. both will need each other especailly if kreese,Terry,Mike and a few others try to muscle in on Johnnys version of cobra kai. im thinking there will put there differences aside to put the students first, since Kreese seems to be creating a fraction of his own at Cobra kai. will be interesting to find out, cant wait to see season 2.

Jedi Crush Middle age sucks. Whenever I see Ralph, William, and Martin who by the way all look really good, I think about how I was in eleventh grade when Karate Kid was released and where has time gone. I have to be honest, I had some Johnny Lawrence moments minus the binge drinking.
