What would happen if a nuclear war were to be sparked between Russia and the United States today? Who would survive?
In our most scientifically realistic simulation to date, we show what a nuclear war between Russia and the United States might look like today. It is based on detailed modeling of nuclear targets, missile trajectories, and the effects of blasts, EMPs, and smoke on the climate and food resources.
We have just announced the results of our latest grant program focused on the humanitarian impacts of nuclear war - see the list of projects here: futureoflife.org/grant-progra...

Here are the resources used in the video. These papers and data sources present the most cutting-edge science we have on nuclear war and its effects:
Nuclear arsenal data:
Hans Kristensen (Federation of American Scientists); The video shows 3,641 of 11,133 US and Russian warheads used, and none from the UK, France, China, India, Pakistan, China, Israel or North Korea.
Nuclear target model:
Prof. Sharon Weiner (American University) & Dr. Moritz Kütt (IFSH Hamburg)
Ballistic missile trajectories calculations:
Prof. Anthony Aguirre (UCSC) & Prof. Tegmark (MIT); In reality, MIRVs of course separate only long after launch.
Electromagnetic pulse modeling:
U.S. Army unclassified report AD-A178230 (1994)
Blast modeling:
Prof. Alex Wellerstein, Stevens Inst. of Technology, https:/www.nukemap.org
Samuel Glasstone and Philip J. Dolan: "The Effects of Nuclear Weapons", published by U.S. Dept. of Defense & Dept. of Energy; Although the video mainly shows ground bursts to simplify visualization, most urban strikes are likely to instead be airbursts to destroy a greater area.
Atmospheric modeling of global smoke spread and lofting:

I'll admit...Covid really screwed me up a bit! As lockdowns were easing, tensions that were built up over many months, culminated in my last break-up. But my career was still going strong, as I had just started what I thought would be an exciting job, as a senior software engineer for a popular online charity organisation. Anyway, news then hit me that Russia invaded Ukraine and films I had watched as a kid, about the aftermath of a Nuclear War, such as The Day After and Threads, started to invade my dreams.... I quickly lost interest in my new job... Pretty much lost interest in a LOT of things, particularly since I was single again, and I guess something finally snapped! Covid... America and Russia engaged in a proxy war... Interest rates, inflation and our failing global economy... Our failing politics and political corruption... This insane trans agenda... Oh and, we've just been informed, here in the UK, that last month was the hottest June on record... So yeah, global warming... Just to name a small handful of current concerns! But the one that really freaks me out is this ongoing conflict. So much so, that I quit my job and have been living of my savings for the past year now... Playing video games, getting high... And just trying to make sense of this insane world that we're living in! Oh I will get back on that horse eventually! I worked too damn hard to give up now! So I'm treating this as a much needed career break! But I do wonder, what exactly are we even fighting for these days? Because the way I see it, our future is very much in jeopardy... For a whole plethora of reasons! Anyway... Good Luck to Us ALL!

They don't serve people, they see people as competitors/sources of income. We the people, are sovereign beings, if a corporation wants to sell us war, we have the right to refuse it. Governments are just a corporation in which people are shareholders, and unfortunately it is a deeply corrupt corporation that does not serve the people but serves itself. Governments are not the home of the people, is nothing to defend there !!! But they are, in fact, the enemy of the people, they are the ones who consider themselves above anything and all, above the people, they are the masters of slaves, that is, those who control people by various means. When people comprehend this, they will no longer give their power into the hands of others, who are naturally kind of psychopathic, that is, hungry for control / power!

I'm 75. Seen about every doc and read every print article about nuclear war, since the 60's. I'm also a veteran of the "duck and cover" scenario in school. We were freaking terrified. Then there was watching our parents being scared... watching Khrushchev go nuts at the UN. We were in Germany at that time and were getting prepped to evacuate back to the USA. My sister and I were a complete mess. We weren't even excited about missing school. And all that stress, to this day, has an impact on me emotionally. We *really* have to keep crazy people out of the White House and military. The responsibility involves every living creature on earth.

Who are these so-called "Ordinary people"? Noah had three sons, namely: Shem, Ham, and Japheth. Almost right after the Flood, they all abandoned the Creator of all things, (who had just saved them from destruction), to go whoring after "other gods". So God told Noah, in a dream, to divide by lot, the entire post-Flood world into three very specifically defined Territories; one Land for each of the Sons and their progeny. Then, Noah was to tell them to stay out of eachother's Territories "lest there be strife".............................. and right from Day-One, there was strife as Canaan, a Hamite, usurped for himself, the best Land on all the Earth, which rightly had fallen to his Uncle Shem. And so, almost all of them, as they abandoned YHWH, got put on His "ignore list" . And so almost right away, there were no ordinary people. The ordinary state of about 75% of mankind, in this World, is to be; Pagan/Heathen/Atheist/or Agnostic. But it's actually worse. Of the 2.2 billion who claim to be Christian, 1.2 billion of them claim to be Roman Catholic, which, at it's roots, is fully Paganized. But it's actually even worse; most of the 1 billion, non RC Christians, are actually daughter-churches to the RC church, the main difference being their system of church governance. So as you can see; what you call "ordinary", is actually the exception. In the World today, Scripturally speaking, there are two kinds of living/speaking creatures, namely; 1) the seed of Adam, and 2) the seed of satan Of the first kind, there are three subdivisions. namely; 1) the Wheat, destined to Everlasting Life 2) the Tares, destined to the Lake of Fire 3) those not yet "drawn" by AlmightyGod, which could go either way. Of the Second kind, there are two subdivisions, namely; 1) the visible kind; which are; a) humans possessed by devils; and/or b) the so-called aliens, which are the rebel-angels kicked-out-of-heaven. 2) the invisible kind; which include but are not limited to; c) satan himself, and d) his army, the spirits/devils, and e) possibly, a few so-called "demons" All of these are destined to destruction. So which bunch, are, "ordinary"?

One of the most popular science writers, Carl Sagan, co-authored in the mid-1980s probably the most influential scientific paper on the subject of nuclear winter (the so-called TTAPS report, after names of the scientists who wrote it). They extrapolated results from research of climatic effects of dust storms on Mars, observed in the 1970s, along with results from their scientific collegues, who studied effects of massive volcanic eruptions and large asteroid impacts in Earth's history...I remember reading about these results, some of which were included in the last chapter of his famous book "Cosmos", titled "Who Speaks For Earth?". I was just a teenager back then, but I still remember how absolutely terrified I was after reading that chapter. He described the total destruction of human civilization as a likely outcome of total nuclear war, but he concluded, somewhat to my surprise, that probably the worst thing would be the consciousness that we could have prevented it, but somehow we failed to do so. The consciousness about a civilization destroyed for no apparent reason. Nuclear war is something that must NEVER happen, if we ever want to have future on this planet, not only for us, but also for our children...

Sagan was far more than a sci-fi writer - he was a scientist, philosopher, mathematician, historian, and author among many other things. His wisdom and intellect would be much appreciated right now in our modern world of climate change and war, alas he passed away much too soon. The original Cosmos is a fantastic show that is still relevant today.

@@grghkllb3875 couldn't agree more, but somehow I feel the need to explain myself-I didn't say that he was sci-fi writer, but SCIENCE writer. What I wanted to say is that he was one of the most influential popularizers and advocates of science (in a way, he was predecessor of Neil deGrasse Tyson and many others) and, of course, as you stated, much, much more than that-scientist, astronomer, philosopher, pioneer in the field of astrobiology, writer, communicator of science...If I remember correctly, he only wrote one sci-fi novel, "Contact", which may be considered to be fictional extrapolation of his previous work in the field of search for the extraterrestrial intelligence (SETI). However, I totally agree with you-his wisdom is greatly missed these days...I often read his most popular books, not only "Cosmos", but also "Pale Blue Dot", "Demon-Haunted World", "Shadows Of Forgotten Ancestors"(which he co-wrote with Ann Druyan-by the way, he dedicated "Cosmos" to her)...

The young politicians are just as bad lol (to the comment saying the boomers need to step down). Acting like younger people wouldn't be just as compromised and controlled by special interests is a joke. Democracy is an illusion on a federal stand point. The real power is in the unelected power holders. All nations are basically run by people who are not chosen by its own people. Even American presidents aren't at all controlling what people think they are. At the end of the day, you simp for the system, or get destroyed. Trump towed the line in some ways, and fights in others, mostly against globalism. And due to that, the system seeks his demise. He's too independent to be back in office on their eyes. That, and he wasn't good for war.

I had a couple of dreams that, due to human nature, nuclear war is inevitable. Someone or some people in positions of power are going to get out of control and push that button, and we are all going to pay the price. Life is so short, you have no idea how short life truly is.

I'd grab an ice cold Ginger Ale, find a nice comfortable lounge chair, sit back, and wait for the greatest fireworks show in history. There's no point in preparing. It's not going to be a world you'd want to live in, even if you could somehow survive. Starvation, radiation poisoning, and a world covered in ash doesn't sound very appealing. I'll take that Ginger Ale and count down the minutes.
