Howard V twin agricultural engine as used on Howard rotary hoes, this particular engine was used on a second world war army field generator at an air force base in the Northern Territory, Australia. Following the wars end, the engine was purchased and finished up partly buried by sand on a remote cattle station in Central Australia minus the generator. It was retrieved and rebuilt using new rings and bearings.

i once saw a guy who made a motorcycle using one of these engines, used a old triumph gearbox, street signs as custom oil pans and other useful bits, hard tail from memory, was a real work of art. So good in fact it was the main story in a custom Bike mag back in the day.. had to be back in the mid 80's. wish i could find it..

Hi, I built that and 2 others Howard bikes in 1980. I still have all 3 and they are in mint condition.

Wow, Thanks for sharing. I would love to find something like that here in Virginia usa. I like most any vintage engine. So simple, so tough and you can keep them running with little more than some basic tools and some sand paper. Post more old engines from down under!

Amazing how after all these years, and being partly buried, she still works! Thats great to hear, nice sounds too. Loving the bike pedal kick starter :-) Long may she live on.

Listen to that magneto whine. My first ride was a 1937 HD ULH 80" and wow, does yours ever bring back some memories. A lovely piece of work you have there, wish it was mine.

I wondered what that growl was. Doesn't sound like spark, something along the lines of magnet/coil orientation.

@@whalesong999 might be the interference to the camera's sound from the magneto because it has no supressors fitted, not an actual sound it makes.

Hi My name is Gary Butler and I have several single and twin cylinder HOWARD engines. I also have 3 hand crafted motorcycles that I built in the early 80's. The 88ci (1475cc) V twin engines were made from 1932 to 1939 and only 5000 were made. The single is half the twin so the barrels, piston, and head are the same as the right on the twin. The crankshafts and conrods are also the same. These engines were designed to chug along at 500rpm so when they're forced to do 3000rpm in a motorcycle, they soon fly apart. As a result of many failures, I've made stronger conrods that don't snap, pistons that don't disintergrate and modified the oiling system so it works. I've used better quality valves, seats, bearings and head gaskets. I have won many trophies for these bikes at shows around Australia.

+Gary Butler I have a copy of Ausbike from 1983 and there is an article about a Howard engine modified and dropped into an Arial frame, lots of mods needed to fix problems. Anyway it certainly looks very good. The builders name in the article is Kiwi so was that you by any chance? Those engines certainly look nice! I would like to see some of your bikes, sure sounds like a lot of hard work to put it all together.

Really beautiful & exceptionally well made. Would be nice if it were mounted in an old motorcycle chassis with some vintage hop up parts. 1300cc’s is plenty big, but I could be wrong and you’d need to check with mechanics specialized in vintage engines before trying

These are my favourite engine of all! How awesome would it be to have one of these for a generator. Yours has the spark plugs on top of the head where as mine are on the side. I have been told yours would be 10hp where as mine is 8hp. Heaps of low end power but not particularly happy at high rpm. Are you missing the cowling or just have it off for display?
@rustymotor
@rustymotor 10 жыл бұрын
They are great looking engines and sound nice too. Thanks for sharing the info about the different spark plug positions, always wondered about that. I did take off the cowling for photos of the engine. Cheers!

you're kind of an odd guy....you sorta get these classic old engines running but they all look like hell and still look like they are only 1 step ahead of the junk man.....why don't you do some full restorations, sand blast and walnut blast the parts and paint them all up nice, fix all the oil leaks, put in some new seals and bearings where needed, and get rid of all the rust and grime.....what's the point of these haphazard low end partial restorations.....get some proper restoration spit and polish into these machines and you'll have 250,000 subscribers
@rossbrumby1957
@rossbrumby1957 Жыл бұрын
Thats kinda like telling a guy with an original survivor car to get it resprayed so it's shiny. (Survivor cars are more valuable than restored). Unmolested originals are at least as highly prized as restored engines and a testimant to their workhorse longevity. Look at the amount of running bikes that Wheels Through Time has that have original patina- that's history you want to erase by sandblasting!
