How I rigged a complex 291m highline in Yosemite BY MYSELF in 12 hours

This was a dream of mine for years. Justin Smestad and I helped Jerry Miszewski and Faith Dickey establish this in 2015, I rigged it with Friedi Kuhne, Lukas Irmler and Kyle Lovett in 2018 and now this time I rigged it 100% by myself in 11hrs 59min while I was hanging out with my friends Nick McPherson and Brian Ward. I believe this is the largest line ever rigged completely solo and it’s Yosemite’s longest line currently. I did enough pulling to equal hauling a 120lb haul bag up the entire face of El Capitan because of the Z dragging. I was only able to do this because Emily May hit me up on her way to Yosemite to tell me about their secret project with a Canadian group (Jan blazek Jirka georga Maurie kowalski) and I realized their line would have been up after I’ve been packing for 2 weeks for this and I can’t go later because GGBY and next year the area is closed for road construction. They were super kind enough to wait to rig it until I was done with this project in this video. I rigged it with the intention of rope swinging which went successful and will be in another episode. I did not walk this line because of the time crunch and Emily had a time crunch as well. She did great on it. Crossing it 3x with not that much time left in the day. Here is the story of this line being rigged! Dreams do come true with enough webbing, packing and stoke!

But how did you get the initial fishing line across the canyon? Or did I miss something? Also, some hikers will have been quite confused, seeing someone using a fishing pole up there, as if you are fishing for a mythical mountain fish! I have never rock climbed in my life, but have been binging on your videos these days, and have been living vicariously through all you guys. Great stuff.

I just can’t get over where the span of these high lines have gone in recent years. When people watch all of these unreal videos from Morocco and Turkey and BC on youtube and see someone sending a line and we read “100m sag” (or whatever the proper nomenclature is) I don’t think it computes with viewers “hey that one inch wide webbing has a 20+ story building of swag in the line” The whole thing is just mind blowing. It’s the most insane thing humans can do in 2022. IMO it even blows the doors off of wing suit stuff because there are professional sports level safeties built in that (regrettably) wing suiting completely lacks at present. One seems like it’s moving in the direction of rock climbing whereas the other seems like it’s moving to being outlawed pretty much everywhere. Also what about all these badass girls waking the lines? Freakin mind blowing.

Quick question: for the double tagline method, rather than having to pull twice a fishing rope which looks like a enormous pain couldn't you just have the second tagline attached to the first one and pull it accros similarly to how you would then pull the webbing?

Maybe this is just a lack of experience... but you really have no worries with a single purple span set girth hitched to one tree with a span of 291 meters? Wouldn’t you want to back that anchor up with another tree at least?
@HowNOT2
@HowNOT2 4 жыл бұрын
In line, that purple spanset breaks at 80kn. In a basket it is double. My webbing breaks at 30kn. No reason to back up tree, because if it comes out, i'm getting pulled down if the spanset is still attached to it. There is no more force on a 291 meter line than a 29 meter line (at peak force)
