Hmm I think you probably ask to much with your question. But here I go...I do adore the look of my Hoya parasitica splash because I had to rescue it when it first came home and now it's looking so much better. ❤ But the one I love the most surprising would likely be my hoya carnosa. It was my first hoya I ever bought, and it grows so well for me, and gives me bigger leaves than it's predecessor (which not to say I'm a born competitive person, but it feels good 😅) and rewards me with little splashes on its leaves now that it never had on its previous leaves like little poppy freckles. So cute and random.

I recently discovered your KZfaq videos, they are well paced and very informative.. I am also a sober person (24yrs) and a new Hoya lover. (I will not watch the martini man again). A little suggestion: I use chopsticks for staking small plants and poking holes in soil for cuttings. They are cheap, reusable, eco friendly and can be cleaned easily if you get the polished bamboo ones.

I personally use bobby pins as plant pins to keep cutting in soil. Super cheap. I just bend them out so they don't pinch the plant. I had no idea you could buy plant specific pins! I have my Crimson Queen Hoya in simi hydro (pon). I never let it get completely dry and my hoya is constantly putting out new leaves. Constantly. I wonder how many people who have hoya troubles are having issues because they let them dry out or don't fertilize enough.
@soberplantguy
@soberplantguy 10 күн бұрын
All of them, maybe 🤣 I tried the bobby pins, my only problem was that my clumsy fingers couldn't undo them very well. But they certainly work well, agreed!

Hi, Dave. I just subscribed to your wonderful channel. Your substrate, is coco coir same as coco peat? How often do you water your hoyas in this substrate? Thanks.
@soberplantguy
@soberplantguy 16 күн бұрын
Correct, exactly the same thing. It works out for me that I water the plants outside of the tent roughly weekly. Based on size of the plant, size of the pot, and ratio of mix, where they are in relation to window--that's just how it works out. The tent is getting watered a little more often, as it has gotten quite a lot warmer here in Iowa (and a LOT warmer in the tent). Cheers ☺

@@soberplantguy In the fragrance community we politely call those "vintage fragrances." Or saying that it would "suit a woman who bought "The Bank of England." I haven't figured out the second label but it's funny so I'll continue to use it. And yes, I love the "Bank of England" scents at my age!

@@soberplantguy Right?! Scent memories are the strongest memories in my opinion. I've taught my husband to appreciate good perfume (yes, it's still called perfume if it's made for men) and to find the particular notes with his nose. He said that he's enjoying experiencing life through his sense of smell. Something that he never paid attention to before. Do you have any idea which perfumes your grandmother or great grandmother wore? Yes, I have a serious fragrance addiction.

Do you have the measurements for you substrate?
@soberplantguy
@soberplantguy 16 күн бұрын
When I'm paying attention, it's roughly 1/3 each, though it's easy to grab more of the chunks and I end up with a mix that dries out quickly 🙃 I can imagine a lot of people wanting more coco coir in their mix, but I'm a huge fan of watering plants ....

OK, hoya expert.I had a gigantic hoya plant for more than 20 years. Everyone I gave a cutting to got blossoms on their plants. l never ever had a blossom on the parent plant. Please explain.
@soberplantguy
@soberplantguy 16 күн бұрын
That'd be hard to give a definitive answer to. I certainly have had many experiences where the cutting grow even better than the mother plant... But light is usually my first guess. While not every single Hoya wants more of it, carnosa does, in my experience. If you are giving it ample light, food is the next thought, and the next thought is..... I'm not really sure 🤣 But, I would be comparing notes with your friends/family.

So many Jennifers! I like clear plastic pots in cover pots for peeking at roots all the time! Otherwise also not afraid to look at roots, it just gets so messy Define conventional wisdom? People who underwater plants/cuttings and then say they are slow growing? Or cuttings in ambient conditions without growlights (which also works but can also be slow). If it works well for you, or even better than the “conventional wisdom” then that is your way to go! And perhaps conventional wisdom will change over time, like with scientists who keep finding more effective ways to reach the result they want. 🧪🫧
