Here it is a quick and easy way to improve the temperatures of the HP RTX 3080, I recently noticed that the temperatures and especially the one of the memory has started to reach 110C, which is way too high and decided to do repasting and replacing the thermal pads with higher quality ones.
Please use 1MM thermal pads for the memory chips!

Did the mod to my 3080ti HP OEM card, which used the same cooling solution as a 3080. Turned out the core temps got way worse than before after the mod. Core temps would hit 83-degree thermal limit and resulted in sub 300w power draw and base 1600mhz core clock, while it was at 78 degrees top before the mod. The reason was that the thermal pads were too effective and the memory temp rarely went over 70 degrees after the mod under load. It was competing with the GPU core for the limited amount of total cooling capacity. I reopened the card, cut all the thermal pads I placed on memory in half in width, so the pads only covered half of the memory chips. This time the thermals were much better. In a 15 minute GPU load test, core temp stayed under 75 degrees at all times while the memory temp hovered around 80 degrees. GPU-z didn't complain about thermal at all times. And then core clock stayed above 1800mhz in the process. Guess it all came down to balance your core and memory temps with the amount of thermal pads placed on the memory chips. Btw the paste I used was Arctic mx6, which was pretty decent.

I’m about to take on this job within the next week! What size thermal pads did you use and where? The video description says use 1mm but also lists 1.5mm for the materials. I’m also interested in how well that Mx-6 is working for you. I am between just using my Thermal grizzly Kryonaut or people say to use thicker stuff like thermalright tfx due to less pump out.
@not_a_bot9408
@not_a_bot9408 Жыл бұрын
@@Trevor2497 I used 85x45x1.5mm Thermalright thermal pads, which were just enough for the job if only covering the center half of the memory chips. Mx-6 lowered the core temp by another 1-2 degrees, comparing with Mx-4. It is affordable, and an 8-gram tube should last you a long time.
@levistoner
@levistoner 7 ай бұрын
Low Ram temps with high core temp is a pad thickness issue, not a cooling load issue. 1.5mm is too thick a pad, 1mm is the proper size. With the pads fully covering the ram chips, the cooler wasn’t contacting the core properly. When you took it apart again and trimmed the pads, it probably allowed the pads to squish enough to let the cooler contact the core better. I would definitely advise replacing those pads with properly sized pads.

you could also use thermal paste on the metal cover that's on top of the memory chips. that will allow for better heat transfer than just the plain metal to copper touching. dawid showed a 10C improvement just doing this when he modded his dell 3080

This is a reference design board FYI. Any reference design cooler will fit on it. I took the HP Omen cooler and put it on my Dell/Alienware 3080. They are interchangable, because both are reference design 3080s This means the reference version of the Corsair waterblock would fit too.

Thanks for this video. One thing that may interest you is the "copper mod" a lot of people are doing to their 3000 series cards, using copper shims instead of the thermal pads. In your case I wouldn't be surprised if you could gain an additional 15-20 degrees Celsius. One thing that is interesting is that the design of this Foxconn card may make that copper mod impossible, or at least more difficult, because a key component is to shield surrounding components from shorts. This PCB looks like it doesn't have that much room adjacent to the memory modules. Even if you decided that mod couldn't be done, I bet you could make a nice 10 minute video explaining why using the footage you already recorded for this one. As your unofficial content advisor, I hope this is of some value to you. :) Love the edits.

hello, i have some tips. First off, you didnt put a pad on the "rogue vrm" chip. theres a set of chip, cap, and vrm that isnt in a row with others. just need a bit of pad on it and the subframe will touch it. thats why your temps might be 'unstable'. on a 3090 it wont matter as much cause it has more ram to cycle through. Second, use HIGH quality paste on the heatsink / subframe. as much as you can stomache. you can use cheap mx4 or mx 5 for the gpu itself. when you paste the gpu just put a big fat blob on it. when you tighten screws, do it slowly. if your paste is too thick then this wont work. 3rd, backplate thermal pads aren't as big of an issue as far as thickness / stiffness is concerned. but still use high quality pads that will compress. i tried putting a bunch of heatsinks on 3080 backplate but ended up removing all that when i did a proper pad /paste replacement. if you deshroud the card and replace with 92mm arctic fans, it will help your temps stay lower and it wont make a ton of noise. HP tries to throttle the fans, but that just leads to temperature creep and really loud gpu fans.

If there would be an award for putting cheapest components in the wrong places - the winner would be probably HP with this PCB. Instead of ceramic packages, let's put cheap ass tower caps (although one can clearly see the PCB designer made space explicitly for ceramic package). Like others, they also did not use parallel placed thallium packages - following others vendors (under the core) put a fat package instead and (despite NVIDIA's recommendation to not do so) hoped for the best. I had the sad experience to use this card, the default "cooling solution" would pretty much get capped by thermals even on default clocks. Isn't Omen supposed to be some premium segment?
