I have an older version of this style of workstation, a Z2 G3. It's old enough where it's got 7-th gen Xeon CPUs (so no Win 11) but still going strong, has been rock solid for 5 years. It was similarly easy to upgrade with additional SSD and RAM. I can't remember the last time I heard the fans on it. It struggles a bit with Capture One Pro and 4k video editing, but for everything else it's never given a hiccup. I expect the new one will be similarly robust, HP's Z line is well engineered. A bit disappointed by only 2 USB-C ports vs more USB-A, and as you say no SD card slot is annoying for content creators like myself.

Powerful portable workstation that could be an alternative to a laptop for some. Love the industrial design, modularity and extended professional warranty (NBD) that comes with these

Interesting device. Powerful to do just about all tasks with ease. Limited portability for local travel. By that I mean good for transporting in a car but not for air travel. A good monitor companion when traveling locally or using in one spot is using this with the KYY 4K monitor you reviewed a while back. Excellent upgradeability. Another great review as always.

It looks very promising, but Why is Thunderbolt always an after-thought on most Windows desktop computers and workstations? On the Z2 Mini G9 they make you choose between Thunderbolt 3 and 10Gb Ethernet for fast external storage, since they are only available through the single "flex port".

HP also has a EliteDesk 800 Mini G9, which is smaller, but goes up to a i9 alder lake and has a RTX 3050 Ti. Haven't seen a video of it yet, but was announced back in february.

Does it matter which display ports you connect the monitors to, in order to use the NVidia GPU? I.e. should you use the miniDP on the GPU card or can the two DP ports on the chassis be used and still take advantage of the GPU? That's what's always puzzled me with these Z Mini. Logically (to me) the chassis ports (on normal desktops) always use the Intel GMA and you had to use the GPU ports to get output from the GPU, but it's not that logical here - neither on the older Z Mini generations...

Hi all, curious, i have an a2000 GPU that I am trying to upgrade into this unit, however, the nvidia supplied low profile adapter doesn't seat properly in the z2 g9 chassis, is there a specific low profile cover for the ports that i am supposed to get?

Thanks Andrew for the great review. I have been using HP Z2 Mini G5 since it came out and I am planning to upgrade now. I checked HP website and they offer the G9 with the new Intel Core i9-13900 (13th Gen 24-Core). However I am hesitant becouse it has been a year since HP released the G9 and they might release G10 soon, not sure though. In your opinion, should I wait for G10 or go ahead and buy the G9 the with its13th Gen Core i9-13900?

One of the biggest perks of being able to easily open computer is the ease to service and clean the computer. Being such a small chassis, you will want to be sure it stays clean inside, or it will start losing performance due to more heat

3 year warranty, i love it, gpu, memory x2, ssd x2, wifi bt upgradeable, (not sure about cpu) all upgradeable, no tools needed, quiet smaller than a studio faster, than the max slightly slower than the ultra, ports galore besides sd card and tb4, tb4 not needed because you can internally and more cheaply add ssd and gpu with no cables. I hope to see some head to head with the studio max and ultra. or a hackintosh version. No sd card, and only 4gb gpu memory are the only weak points I see, but you can upgrade that. not sure what is the best gpu you can upgrade to/

Looks really good, but that 20k score in Cinebench R23 is very low for a 12900K, I guess is somewhat limited in TDP or something to not overheat with that small cooling system.

@@andyH_England it's important in ultra books as well for security and changing workloads as if you bring your system in for service even with erasing the hard drive it can be restored by crooks, this is why upgradeable SSD is crucial for business, ram too if you ever may need to upgrade, companies solder it to make additional profits at time of purchase and to block other companies from profiting later and to make it obselete over time. Ports are similar to get you to buy adapters that may or may not work, or the next model up in the line up, and to lower the cost of production and repair to the computer company, the less you include the less can go wrong and fewer warranty complaints,. They have figured out it is cheaper to scrap and replace the new throw away laptops and phones then repair them apple Microsoft and others are experts at this.

This thing is not upgradeable. It uses a proprietary pcie bracketing system. Regular low profile cards won’t work! Reviewer didn’t mention that at all.

It’s because the Intel iGPU onboard graphics only has an 18Gig HDMI PHY internally. 18G HDMI is pretty much uselsss. You can’t even run 4K60 at 10-bit color without turning on chroma subsampling.

Heads up, the GPU PCIe bracket is not a standard size. Anyone looking to upgrade a lower model to an RTX A2000 be aware.
@5urg3x
@5urg3x 8 ай бұрын
Huh? What do you mean standard size? It’s a low profile / half height bracket. That absolutely is standardized.
@5urg3x
@5urg3x 7 ай бұрын
So, you’re 100% correct. I tried to install an Intel Low Profile X520 10Gb NIC and while the card will fit and works, I have to run it without the bracket. This is not a standard low profile PCIe bracket implementation.

I really wish I did not buy this thing. I’ve had nothing but problems. For every good thing this system has, it comes with really bad tradeoffs. For example, the PCIe slot is low profile, but it doesn’t use standard low PCIe slot profile brackets! HP literally created their own bracket system just to lock out standardized server cards. What a joke.
