Boris Johnson insists the high speed rail link, HS2 is "crucial" for the country, as he marked the official start of construction of the tracks for the project costing more than a hundred billion pounds. The first phase will see a 140 mile line running from Euston in London to a new station at Curzon Street in Birmingham. The second phase will then run services north from Birmingham to Manchester and Leeds. The Prime Minister says, 22 thousand new jobs will be created, but critics warn more jobs will be lost overrall, and the harm to the environment will be catastrophic. Our Business Correspondent, Katy Austin reports.

The UK is so far behind places like Japan and China. High speed rail networks may be unnecessary for London growth but essential for growth in the North of England. Bringing the North and Scottish cities closer together to the UK financial capital will bring far more long term economic benefits in those areas.

Paul Taylor it’s 108 woodlands not 300 and they are planting twice as many trees than are cut down. I’m not sure what else they can do to satisfy people. There is a massive saving on emissions by switching to rail rather than operating equivalent flights. People moan about a third runway at Heathrow and general airport expansion but the alternative solution of high speed rail people also moan about.
@robf
@robf 3 жыл бұрын
Paul Taylor Well it’s being built since no one has any better ideas than congested skies and roads. High speed rail is one of the most efficient forms of transport, I’d rather see a network of HSR linking the country than more roads and airports. All that can be done now is hold them to account. I don’t think its ideal but it’s certainly better than the alternative, unless you think the country’s population is going to shrink substantially.

I spoke to one of the company's behind HS2 , they said this doesn't count as a long distance railway so stuff like electromagnetic trains or bullet trains would be waste of money. But I highly doubt this with london to Birmingham still taking a hour and the amount time it's taking to build it this.

There are more jobs moving from London to Birmingham since they announced HS2, so who is in who's commuter belt? Also it is projected that is will quadruple Birmingham Airport's capacity and stop an expansion at Heathrow. Lastly, I'm young and foresaw this so I have saved every penny I could, told close friends and family to do the same and we have bought property in Digbeth near Curzon Street in anticipation of HS2 so I can build apartments, even had planning approved. We can either have you moaning, bullshit attitude and doom merchanery, or you can go out and do shit. LOL I suppose many were saying the same about the channel tunnel first proposed in 1802! Based on the 186 year wait for Chunnel construction to actually begin - we could have some element of HS2 by the next century. Of course despite being over budget the channel tunnel only ended up costing a mere £4.65 Billion. A drop in the bucket comparing the current estimate of HS2 at £88.7 Billion [a safe bet to believe that will easily top £100 Billion before opening]. Which one do people believe provides more value to Britain? What else could £100 Billion be better invested in?

Not to mention that you just can't increase capacity on existing lines anywhere near that realised building a new line. Let alone increasing capacity on a line as optimised as the WCML. The only way to optimise the WCML more is pretty much rip the whole thing up and replace it, and even then it wouldn't increase the capacity anywhere near as much as a brand new line would/will.

@@dphuntsman HS2 will give the single biggest boost in capacity to our rail network ever, this means there will finally be room for more local commuter trains, more frequent stopping services at more stations, more available platforms at existing major stations such as Birmingham New Street to allow new/old lines to open/reopen; thus allowing new/closed stations to reopen. @unknownuser069
@unknownuser069 3 жыл бұрын
I think many commenters here are politically motivated and emotional. Too many jabs and not enough consideration. I don't deny that the report MENTIONS that there is opposition. However it only mentions two reasons. Loss of "ancient woodlands" and "overall net loss of jobs." The woodlands seems more obvious, and I think its very important, but more time could be spent on that issue and its importance. The lady they interviewed mentioned mitigation, what does she envision? What exactly are the mitigation efforts, what do they cost, and can more than one set of mitigations be undertaken? For example, moving and preserving some old growth trees while simultaneously engaging in new planting. As far as the jobs, I don't think anyone has hard facts in either direction, but this reporting just states the two assertions without any discussion of the proponents arguments for or against those positions. Forget the accuracy - we didn't actually hear either sides argument. I would like to hear some of their arguments and a little counterpoint as well. Historically infrastructure is a good thing, expanding economies over the long term, and usually governments begin infrastructure late and don't take those projects far enough. For example in my home region Washington DC, there was a highway plan that proposed building two highway rings around DC. One was built called "The Beltway" and the other has not been built - though one county built a portion of it. As a result of this partial implementation of that plan, the DC metropolitan region has some of the worst traffic in the US as well as abominable public transit infrastructure. You do not want to replicate that. I think that this rail system is not nearly extensive enough, that it is being built too slowly, and I also believe you need to pay more attention to ecological impacts. Lastly while I think infrastructure always positively impacts the economy in the long term, perhaps government can do more to stimulate that growth in the short and mid term. Regarding ecological impacts, the UK should consult Brazilian experts. Brazil has worked out that you can not plant forest in regular patterns and replace their natural functionality... more importantly they are the most advanced in how to plant with the right sorts of irregularity to recreate ancient forests and jungles. A cooperative partnership could probably settle all the ecological issues with HS2 and help Brazil invest in protecting the Amazon - a ancient wooded region they must develop, but at present Brazil can not afford to do so sustainably. That could create net wins which impact us all positively regardless of where we live.

Forgive me if I am wrong, but isn’t railway more climate friendly than planes, and really we should opening up old railway lines, and increase taxes on air travel, due to them being more damaging to the planet. Again, I agree it’s sad it’s destroying old woodlands, but, shouldn’t this be a compromise on the many woodlands across the world having less stress on them due to climate change. Trains can be completely run off renewables too. So I’m off the opinion, more electronic trains, less icu cars and planes. 👍

Cancel this ridiculous project and invest in the crumbling local rail networks in cities other than London. The West Coast main line gets you to Manchester from London in a reasonable time already. It needs to be cheaper not faster.
@david65219

We can afford both, but we like electing people who lie to us and say we can't. Also cancelling HS2 wouldn't make the money available, it's money borrowed over a long period of time against the actual project. The WCML may very well get you from London to Manchester reasonably, but your luxury of an efficient journey comes at the expense of Tamworth having a measly hourly service and Porthmadog having a laughable 2-hourly service.

Will UK workers willing to take the wages of the Chinese workers in China, like 400-500 GBP monthly, is there figures OK for them ?? 22000 jobs at a cost of £106,000,000,000 means ever job is costing about £5 million. Given that this project is becoming obsolete even as it's just commencing, it's not only incredibly destructive to our wildlife and woodlands, it's a colossal waste of taxpayers money. It's clearly only going ahead because the Tories promised to their donors in the engineering and building industry. And don't get caught in the sink cost fallacy. Every pound spend on this project going forward is wasted. It's just throwing good money after bad...
