An drilling rig is towed around the world by a single tug.
A brand-new drilling rig, worth 500 million dollar, has to go from South Korea to Europe. The problem: It is too gigantic for a heavy transport vessel. The solution: it’s being towed. By one single tug. It’s a true Mega Transport, halfway around the globe - all that in just 90 days.
The Mega Transport starts in Ulsan, South Korea. West Bollsta was built here for 6 years - and is now ready to get to its operation site. But how should this beast be delivered? It’s 123 meters long and 76 meters wide. Its maximum drilling depth: incredible 12 kilometers! Way to bulky to be transported in a common way. Surprisingly, a rather small kind of boat is best for the job: the ALP Striker - one of the strongest ocean tugs in the world.
The ALP Striker will pull the drilling rig across the oceans on arm-thick steel cables. They are so heavy that only the ship's own crane can move them. Connecting tug and rig alone takes a whole day.
Once the drilling rig is towed to the tug, they’re embarking on a journey never before seen: around the cape of good hope. Navigation, pirates, wind and waves - there are many unpredictable challenges along the way. Once they have managed them all, the destination is in sight: the Canary islands.

What a well presented documentary on a very difficult and exacting operation. Every moment was tension filled but the cool and highly professional approach made it look so routine. What a great experience to be on such a rig. I have worked for one of such a rig called *Safe Bristolia* in Singapore kepple shipyard during 2007, it was even bigger then this one in the vedio. But what is most striking is the massive ness of the structure. It's an unforgettable experience, and sobering memories. I was also blessed to work for another Russian oil rig in Singapore during 2003 to 2005 a complete refurbishment of the *Marmanskaaya* even Bigger then this one. It's always a joy and a challenge to work on a rig. Good luck guys.

"The greater the distance between tug and tow the deeper the wire sags this acts as a shock absorbed reducing the tension and thus protects the main towing wire and the chain anchors on the rig this is the only way for the connection to survive the continuous load" "In shallow water the steel cable would grind on the rocky seabed and break so when they near a coastline the crew has to pull the rig at the distance of around 400 meters minimum" Great important lesson learn, sir!

There are many types of rigs, some are attached to floor, some are attached by cables, some are self proppeled, like this one.

Depends on how much oil is down there really. If it's shitload then they will build a permanent structure. Otherwise they will build something like this one.

Rigs are mobile, such as a semi-sub like here, jack up or drill ship. Platforms are permanent structures usually attached by a "jacket".

@@adinicic4259 It doesn't depend on the amount of oil but the depth of the sea at the point. Deploying a massive oil rig is so expensive that it does not matter that much if it's built to the seafloor or not. If there is enough oil to deploy a rig, there is enough oil to justify building a permanent structure. The problem however is that most of the oil is so deep down, that it does not make any sense to build it to the bottom. Free floating or cable-attached, or semi subs are basically without depth restrictions. Those that are attached to the floor are basically used in waters less than 300 meter deep, there are exceptions tho. And funny thing is, even the biggest fixed, norwegian built, oil rigs were actually floated to the scene and then ballast tanks were flooded to make the whole structure sit on the seabed.
