We review the brand new 2023 Hummer EV truck. There is an EV arms race between Ford, RAM, and Tesla to prove who can make the most capable luxury building on wheels. We discussed the engineering of this next-generation SUV, and the Truck was created. Others to consider are the Rivian R1T, Tesla Cyber Truck, Ford Lightening.

I ran the math a while back on this, the energy consumption and range of this while doing severe offroading is equivalent to a fully fueled ICE Ford Bronco carrying an additional 15 gallons of gasoline. I honestly don't think this will have any big issues, you'd be hard-pressed to find a stretch of offroad course in the United States that could actually tax that range to the limit. That said I'm sure somebody will drive this off the edge of black bear pass at some point.

The fact this car weight (with occupants and luggage) is 10,000 pounds is INSANE! If this car crashes into anything less than a mid-size SUV, you will be toast. As SUVs and Trucks are getting bigger they need to update crash test safety standards on how a vehicle impacts other smaller cars during a collision. God forbid this hits a Honda Civic let alone a pedestrian...
@mybro727

This vehicle has been on the market for over a year now. How many Hummer related accidents have you heard of or Hummers that have been involved in a crash? There have been more Tesla related fatalities in one calendar year than there has been Hummer fender benders reported since the vehicle has been in production, yet y’all will deem this to be _the most dangerous_ simply because of it’s capability on and off road, size and mass? Is the Raptor R and TRX trucks exempt from being so dangerous because they carry gallons of flammable gasoline? Sure, that makes complete sense. 🤡

@@mybro727 Dude, there have been less than like 1,000 total deliveries of this thing. By sheer volume of production you SHOULDNT be hearing about wrecks. Tesla has sold almost 2 million cars so obviously you haven't heard of wrecks comparatively. Also, this guy is talking about weight. Tesla's are already insanely heavy. This is NINE THOUSAND pounds. The average weight of cars prior to recent years was like 3k pounds; a proper sports car is usually in the mid 2ks (even some today are). If this thing hits anyone in a compact car or even sedan, they will be dead.

@@mybro727 in physics: force = mass x acceleration. A 4,000 pound full-size Dodge Charger running into you at 70mph will do LESS damage to your car than this 10,000 pound Hummer going 35mph. In other words: Brock Lesnar's jab is going to hurt a LOT more than a haymaker from a 6th grader.

@@seanshong2048 Sir, a “jab” from a 6,00 lb RAM TRX at 70 mph could kill you just as well as a Hummer traveling 70 mph could kill you. The RAM isn’t exactly a 6th grader’s jab and neither is a 2 ton Dodge Charger plowing into you at 70mph. A better analogy is the 6th grader shooting you with the same gun as Brock Lesnar. That’s the part that’s going right over your head, they’re both equally as dangerous under the same circumstances. The Hummer isn’t anymore dangerous than the Charger would be at the hands of the same reckless driver as both vehicles are powerful and heavy. I know this goes completely against your narrative but it is the actual *reality.*

I like this thing as a comical marvel of engineering and am simultaneously glad that GM will not sell this in large quantities. This completely defeats the reason why we need to electrify transportation: it hogs resources, is extraordinarily inefficient for such a high resource requirement, and is so heavy it is a threat to infrastructure durability when the United States is desperately in need of rebuilding and futurizing.

As someone who works with people who have commercial drivers licenses. I promise you It means absolutely nothing. Also you don't need a CDL untill the gross vehicle weight rating is over 26,000 pounds. 9,000 is not that much. My work truck is 14,000 pounds empty. Also this does not apply to recreational vehicles.
@tylertullis6536
@tylertullis6536 Жыл бұрын
@@autohelix For sure, I know it doesn't meet the minimum for a CDL, however, 9,000 lbs is more than enough if you ask the person who gets in an accident against the guy driving this pig. Gob forbid the other person is in a rational vehicle that weighs much much less. I sure as hell don't want to get mowed down by the latest small penis energy brodozer while driving my mx5.
@autohelix

@@tylertullis6536 Yeah but how is a CDL going to make a difference? The main purpose of a CDL in my opinion is to make sure everything works lights tires and so on. I always wondered why manufacturers use a steering wheel with paddle shifts in a car that doesn't have an automatic. Like sometimes they use it for engaging rev match in a manual car, and then in EVs like this for turning regen on and off. Is it cause they just have a surplus of steering wheels with paddle shifters? I don't get why the do this
@Mr.Marbles
@Mr.Marbles Жыл бұрын
Because it is a position that can be very easily reached without taking your hands off the wheel. And they also probably produce the same steering wheel over and over so its cheaper if just all of them have it.

Thanks for the review. I have had #580 for little under a year now and do love it - its unique, a bit over the top agree, but an engineering marvel. Sure it isn't as luxurious as a Range Rover but for the price ($112K) it is pretty awesome, capable, etc. Love that it also keeps me so far from buying a convertible. Range is great, seeing about 350 miles to 375 at 100% here with normal driving, closer to 329 when a fast speed road trip, etc. Most days drive to/from places, plug it in, charges for 2-5 hours using cheap electricity or free Sunlight, etc. My only complaint is that it has an underpowered infotainment system a bit but that is alleviated by using Android Auto here instead anyways. One latest pro is that we are all getting new v3 battery replacements soon I guess since they recalled our v1 batteries due to sealing issues.

EV’s still need some regression testing to be ready for the mainstream, but will get better overtime. I’ve a 2022 Ford Lightning and so far have put 10k miles on it. It’s been great but has it’s share of issues and quirks. Would I buy again? Maybe. But I do have an ICE vehicle and wouldn’t replace ICE to EV at the moment or the near future.

"1 kW in to the heat pump gives you 5 kW out" "Not using the electrons to propel the vehicle I'm using the thermal energy in it" Shit man I gotta go back to school I'm way behind on this new stuff
@rj.parker
@rj.parker Жыл бұрын
No gas engine means no "free" cabin heat. Heat pumps transfer heat from one place to another. So you can get 5kw of heat for 1kw of heat pump compressor energy. Usable for heating the cabin without relying on electric heat strips which require at least 5kw of electricity to get 5kw of heat. The heat pump is efficiently transferring battery thermal heat to the cabin when and where needed. The suggestion that this heat pump is getting 5 to 1 efficiency (COP of 5) is the story since most heat pumps are around 3 to 1 Coefficient of Performance average. The "using electrons to propel" simply means saving more battery capacity for the motors rather than using more of it for old school electric strip heat. All of which is a bigger deal in a cold climate like Chicago than Florida or Southern California.

Base price 110,000, with options 145,000, with dealer markup 185,000. That's just what we need.. another expensive big-ass vehicle in addition to what we have on the road right now.
