Hi Brian. Yes, that is fine, and is typical for Anti-Siphon type valves, which is likely what you have. For the majority of irrigation systems, especially large systems, the valves are buried in the ground and connected to the mainline pipe downstream throughout the property. Valve boxes provide an access point to maintain and service the valve.

Thanks for the question. The most common reason for sprinklers not rising is due to dirt and debris getting into the heads and restricting their ability to pop up. We'd suggest checking that first. You can unthread the heads at the ground level, remove the insides, and check for debris. We'd suggest running them under some water to try to clean them up a bit. If that doesn't solve your problem, it could be that the heads are no longer working properly, or it could be a flow issue. Some Hunter valves have a flow control built into them, while some don't. If yours does, you'll see the control right at the top of the head. Someone would typically have had to manually turn that to lessen the flow - they don't generally get out of adjustment on their own. Another thing to check out it whether there's debris inside the valve that is causing the diaphragm to stop working properly, although it's way more common in that case for the valve to be leaking water as opposed to not passing enough to raise the heads.

What’s up FNMCaffeine! The answer is: it could be anything! The outlet PSI is dependent on the incoming pressure. You will need to test the static pressure at a hose bib, or someplace on the irrigation near the backflow with a pressure gauge to to find out your starting value. There is typically a loss of 1-3psi going through the valve, and anywhere from 5-10+ psi loss due to friction along the piping to the valve.

Thanks for your question. You typically use a 24v solenoid on this valve and use an electric irrigation controller to open and close the valve. For more remote locations where a controller might not have access to power, you can also use a battery powered controller and a 9V DC latching solenoid in order to activate the valve.

Hi Brandon, great question. There could be debris under the solenoid, preventing it from functioning properly. The solenoid could be failing, electrically, which could also cause this. Checking for debris and or replacing a solenoid would likely be the fix. You might consider purchasing a new valve, and using it as parts. Look forward to seeing what others say as well.

You might try cleaning out the solenoid port - sounds like there could be debris clogging it. Turn off you main water supply and remove the top of the valve so that you can clean everything out. Let us know how it goes!

Or, maybe you aren’t opening the solenoid all the way, I did the same thing on my grandmother’s system
