Jason heads to the woods with the battery powered Husqvarna 120i chainsaw to see how the battery handles -10 C Winter weather in New Brunswick. He puts it to the test in frozen hardwoods like beech, yellow birch and sugar maple. He uses the Kubota B2601 tractor and the Kranman T1750 hydraulic timber trailer to haul the firewood back to the wood yard.

I agree with you, the battery powered saws have their place, I use one around my firewood processor and the mill to de-limb a log or tidy up a really crooked piece. It’ll be a while before they’re going to replace my gas powered units in the woods. Thanks for posting this- quite educational and a refreshingly honest opinion. Jeff.

Thanks Jeff. I'm not sure if the bigger Husqvarna battery powered saw would do the trick or not... It is supposed to be equivalent to a 40cc gas unit... so expensive though!

I have Stihl MSA-200, it’s surprising how long the battery lasts. I have two batteries, so in theory I could keep swapping them out through the high capacity charger. At the cabin, I take both in the woods and drop trees and buck with the Stihl 261 and my teenage son does the limbing with the electric. It’s good practice for him, before moving up to the gas saw. The battery saw is great in the city, with the low noise level. A tree service at my neighbours did all the pruning with battery saws.

Yes, that makes sense. I had my oldest son using the small gas powered Stihl a while ago doing the limbing for me… biggest smile I have seen in a while!

Excellent video Jason. Impressive and informative. You are right in your assessment of their place as a handy convenient alternative for light work. We use one around the sawmill for a quick cut as required and it’s handy to carry on the side by side or the snowmobile. Again excellent video.

Nice demonstration Jason! I have the Stihl MS 300c, it’s very handy. The battery lasts longer than you would expect. I typically use it for limbing and for heavy brush. It’s the saw I usually keep in the SxS most of the time. They are still quite pricey though…I like mine! Stay safe, Ed

Definitely a neat little saw for around the house. That said I would not want to process my yearly firewood supply with a saw like that. I just got done bucking up a big American Elm, which is probably the toughest wood around here. I used my 562xp for that one.

I have an Echo battery operated chainsaw and leaf blower. Both work well. I use the chainsaw for cleaning up logs for the firewood processor and the leaf blower for cleaning the saw dust and chaff off and around the firewood processor. I also blow snow off the vehicles.

Hi Richard, it makes a lot of sense to get a unit that can share batteries with other tools. I'm intrigued by the battery powered blowers as it seems like they are really good for sawdust and fines clean up!

I think your bang on wit your assessment of timing for the viability of gas saws, as well as the current limitations of the electric saws. I can't get past the fact that they still sound plasticky when running. It's the only way I can describe it. But I still want one for just throwing in the Jeep with no gas smell. Last week I could have used one and saved myself another km of walking, although the walk was good for me. Nice bore cut! Good way to prevent damaging your crop tree on that coppice.

Thanks Craig! Karen keeps saying the battery saw sounds like a sewing machine… weird for sure… there is a safety switch on the side of the handle that you have to keep pressure on with your thumb; quite a pain when limbing. Having said all that I want one too! Ha ha ha

How's she goin'? I was surprised at how well the electric saw stood up. The battery was lasting pretty good in the cold. But I agree with you, gas saws are in no danger of losing their place when it comes to serious and continuous wood cutting. Take care!!!

I have the husky 540i & love it, I did a lot of research & settled on the 540i. I know it is expensive but it sure cuts the wood. Peter

Thanks for the feedback Peter. Does it have the safety button on the side of the handle too? That is hard to get used to when limbing. Could it cut this hardwood down?

No Jason it does in have a safety on the side of the handle. It does however have a step up similar to a regular chainsaw. The 540i will cut ash trees down as large as 14 inches. I am throughly impressed with this saw. I had to get a pacemaker and the manufacturer said that using a regular saw. This saw has allowed me to continue to what I love to do.

I have a 120i I bought mine last year and the thing was a monster could cut 18” logs and didn’t bogg down at all and had the connection between batter and saw melt sent it in and they gave me a new 120i and the new one don’t work as good as the last one I had was catching a lot like yours but when the chain started to dull a lil it actually started cutting a lot better

Yes, I find that the small saws with very sharp chains are prone to catching like that and they do not have enough power to make the cut. I’m hearing that the 540i has all kinds of power so that will be what I save for!

Look up 540i on the net. Supposed to be as good as a 40cc gas model. I see the price is down to $900 plus tax now. They were $1200 and tax when I looked at them last year!

As Jeff says, they have their use, would that be for occasional/intermittent use. Example you go in the trails and cut small low hanging limbs here and there. Stop and go with the side-by-side. So you don't have to pull start and stop the gasoline engine, not to mention dealing with the choke, etc. It's always ready for a quick cut. But not for continuous hard work though. Thanks!

Don't think this saw will be much good in everyday use for a forest owner. Handy to have at times maybe on a tractor or in a utility vehicle where a petrol saw is more of a chore to pack with fumes etc. Perhaps a bigger model could handle small trees better.
