Black food grade approved buckets were all purchased from ULINE. They have 1,3,4,5,7 gallons from round to square and lids. The great thing about ULINE is that you can order as many lids as you want incase you ever want to change a certain bucket from a 2" or 3" netcup hole or mess up on drilling it out. If growing indoors, I highly recommend the black ones to block out the light from getting in and not creating algae in your nutrient solution. Black is also recommended for outdoors but will absorb the heat from the sun very quickly. So in saying this, try to pick the colour that works for you outdoors or come up with a solution to keep the bucket and solution cool. Many people use reflective bubble insulation. Hope that helps.

Quick question, are your hydroponics all kratky or you use some form of aeration?

That’s a great question!! I grow all kinds of ways,, Kratky, DWC, nft, soil all indoors ! I’m even wintering my parents prize pepper plants indoors for next year that I started for them from seed! So, Kratky is the easiest method and works very well! I love Kratky method, Kratky does not require any aeration DWC, deep water culture requires aeration only because of it being step 2 of hydroponics and requires aeration. Miss Sassy & Company these are exactly the questions that I’m hoping to help everyone with! Your feedback and questions are needed so that I can make nice calm and clear videos to answer these important questions! So, simple answer to your question, is yes! I use aeration in some.

@@idealdirecthomeimprovement1639 what's the oldest plant you have? Did you start the oldest plant kratky and then change container to something else? (Eg, circulating, multi container, static water level setup, container water level managed by connected PVC pipes at base?) PS: you do not get enough views for this massive, albeit piecemeal, setup. Having it all in one room without grow tents is great.

That’s awesome to hear, well you know how short our outdoor growing season is! I grew the carrots exactly like I grew the radishes! Growing cucumbers indoor is fun! Any Parthenocarpic species are designed to deliver mostly females, so pretty much all the flowers will fruit. So, they are meant to grow in greenhouses without bee pollinators. DIva, Socrates, Piccolino, and Iznik are some type of parthenocarpic varieties. I would definitely try any of those! Thank you for watching, stay tuned for more videos to come.

The kohlrabi plant was started as a seeding in a peat pellet, in my nursery, then I put the baby plant in a 3” netcup and using a clone color exactly the way I transplanted the bean plant in this video. Excellent video. You did a great job maximizing space and height. Have you ever seen the builds that use y-tee connectors? If so, what are your thoughts on the design?

Thanks Allen! I definitely wanted to take full advantage of the small room and produce as much as I could, it took quite a few rebuilds and some crazy inventing, especially the extensions for the poles and the great S clips to attach the racks together. The racks are essential for racks that came with 5 shelves and casters from Costco. The S clips allowed me to use 16 poles with casters and like 4 racks into 7 growing stations. I have never seen y-tee connectors, do you have a link to a video of a setup like that? I’m always interested in new setups! Thanks for watching Allen! Stay tuned for more videos! Happy growing!

Thank you! Any seeds used outdoors can be used indoors and in hydroponics. There is no difference of seeds that I use for any of my plants. Hope this helps! Happy growing! 😉

Just responded to your replies on the first video I watched of yours. What a sweet setup my friend! You really put amazing effort into this grow room! I have not heard anyone comment about changing the MB formulation after flowering. It sure seems to work great! A couple questions. do you keep the NFT system running 24/7? Also, do you find that as you add more nutrient mix to your tomato and pepper containers over time the EC gets out of whack? Maybe since your containers are only 3 gallon that it helps maintain EC as yin add more? Thanks again for sharing and congrats on an amazing setup!

Thank you, I really thought it was worth putting something together that could really produce because I can’t grow outdoors without having a green house. It might look complicated but it’s all just the initial setup to make it all easy. Changing the recipe is very important to raise the Ec once they start to flower to produce well. The smaller containers are perfect because the plant drinks everything up, so I can easily change the bucket with freshly ph Ed nutrients, and add some fresh on a daily basis when needed. I love the Kratky philosophy, but I wanted it simple. Trying to grow a plant to maturity in one container and the same nutrients just isn’t possible without everything going out of whack, there is really nothing about setting it and forgetting it.

The pump on the nft only runs for 15 mins per hour sometimes even just 10. A lot of people keep it 24 hrs, I don’t see any reason for that. The 15 minutes is plenty on the nfts, and it’s only 1/4 feed line with a low pressure pump. Hope that helps and it’s nice to hear that you like the setup, I hope to help and inspire more people to grow their own food, especially at the prices now. I think we should all at least have some knowledge on how to grow something. Smaller containers are easier to manage and I check the ph at least once a week. The containers really are to hold the nutrient mix and roots. Nice clean and simple. I hope that helps.

Are the light heights adjustable to accommodate different height plants or do you just move taller plants to another area? If they are adjustable heights, how did you set that up so it's easy to move up and down?

Would be interested in seeing how you modified the clone collars... in your other video I think you mentioned you also bought some LED lights from Costco. Were they Root Farm lights? Geez, I wish I had this video ready to go sooner to help. If you haven’t used the clay pebbles, see if you can return them? I was looking at the root farm lights from Costco, they would be great to be used like the square lights I have over the beefsteak determinate plants and the cucumbers. If it’s the same deal I saw, like a 2 pack. They might be worth looking into. The only thing I wasn’t fond about was that they didn’t have an on/off switch. But again, they lol get plugged into. Power be with a timer. I will make a quick video hopefully today to show you how I make custom holes in the clone covers and send it over to you on Facebook. Thank you so much for watching!

Hello Susan! Yes the Koda lights from Costco for the leafy greens (lettuce, arugula, kale, spinich and radishes and carrots!) Yes they can be used with a timer and they can be used by plugging them into each other up to 5 lights or something like that, My pleasure!

Well, I only use net pots with nursery bag for radishes and carrots to hold the soil or coco coir from washing away in the nutrient reservoir and giving these root vegetables a taste of its normal growing substrate. Net cups with clone collar all the way as opposed to net cup and clay pebbles aka leka. Hope that helps and thank you for watching!

How did you extend your metal rack height? It looks like you used a grey tubing. Genius! Would like to know how you did that! Nice video by the way.

Hello Lori! I used 3/4 pvc to match the thickness of the original tubes with couplings, but I put 1/2 white pvc in the center of the grey pvc. It was the best sizing I could find but I had to drill out the inside of the grey pvc with a large drill bit so the white pvc could go inside the grey pvc. It’s hard to explain, I will see if I could make a short video to describe what I did. It certainly works to raise the height, it’s a little wobbly but all my racks are connected, so it kind of adds for stability. Thank you for watching and enjoying the video 😊

I’m not sure I understand your question, but I will try to explain. There is a little pump and I show it I. The video I also have a link for it from Amazon. I just use a bucket as a reservoir and the pump has a built in timer that sucks the water from the reservoir and into anything I want it to feed. I hope that helps you, thank you for watching!

Thank you! I have two models, the first ones I bought were the mars hydro sp150, I fell in love with them because they are amazing! They work amazing on pepper plants and tomatoes also! So after that I bought a couple mars hydro sp-3000 and oh boy did they ever take growing to a different level! The sp150 is perfect for 36” wide rack . The sp3000 are almost overkill and can basically light up an entire room. They work absolutely incredible on a 4 foot rack like I have and I can fill up the rack with 4 tomato or pepper plants. They are actually on sale on prime day and that’s when I bought them. Here is the link for the sp150 which is a beast. amzn.to/46GeuM6 Here is the link for the sp3000 if it’s in your budget amzn.to/3NJwahb These lights are my preferred because they work well to light up the exact space of my racks. The most important thing about these narrow lights is that you can set up strings from the top of the rack to help support the plants with out interference of a square light like other models. This was very important to me. They are very powerful and in my opinion do a better job than the square models from mars hydro. The square lights are good for grow tents. The difference between the sp150 and 3000 is that the 3000 is longer with more led lights and they have a daisy chain system and are dimmable. Honestly I just like them because they are longer and help a little light to the racks on the side. I rarely use the daisy chain and the dimming . My recommendation is the sp150 I hope this helps and happy growing!

@Runboy7426 that’s a great question! Kratky all the way period. Too much bs and hype about airstones I found no difference whatsoever. I invested hundreds of dollars in air stones, lines and pumps for absolutely nothing lol. Kratky does it all nice and simple. Hope that helps and happy growing!

The stronger lights that I’m using for the tomatoes and the pepper plants are Mars hydro Sp-150. As for the shop lights they are 4500 k. All leds. I have links in the description, check them out. Does any of your lights produce heat to help heat your room? I notice your temp was 77 Fahrenheit. How do you heat your room?

Great question, the lights don’t really produce much heat. The room is part of the house that is centrally heated and cooled. 77 degrees Fahrenheit is actually perfect temperature, 25 degrees Celsius. Any of the plants aren’t wanting anything more than that. I hope that helps

How are you taking care of your seedlings in the jiffy pellets? Do you flood and drain the flat tray:container they’re sitting in with nutrient solution until they are large enough to transfer to their individual kratky containers?

Doug, my seedling tray is a regular seedling tray. The tray has channels that are raised. I don’t do any flood and drain for seedlings and young plants that aren’t ready for transplant. I water my tray or seedlings every morning with just enough water to keep the pellets moist and encourage the roots to reach out to the bottom of the tray and the pellets. No more no less, very simple.

I transplant the plants when they have the first true leaves and good roots coming out from the original seeding medium ( aka peat pellets or rockwool and oasis cubes) In the video I showed the bean plants and the roots, they had true grown leaves. They didn’t have to be that mature to transplant, It’s all about what works best for you.

I don't suppose you might have a recommendation for how, specifically, to cut clean/easy holes in the lids with a hole saw...? I have been trying today to do exactly that, and I've found it is very difficult to get a clean cut, and I can't come up with a reasonably safe-ish way to do it. The moment the saw grips into the lid it wants to move the lid and/or tear it up. I've gotten some moderately even holes, but I've had to throw out some lids already, and ultimately I don't feel like I'm doing this very safely. I took a break and considered maybe running the drill in reverse would actually work since it wouldn't grip into the plastic but might still be able to cut through it, but I haven't yet tried that. Any thoughts/suggestions?

Doug I would try to find a piece of wood to sit the lid on as backing. Start the drill till the pilot hole starts then put it in reverse and go slow. Take your time. It takes practice, then if it has burrs just use a fine file. What lids are you using? Is it the yellow Home Depot containers, they are a little tricky takes patience

Great video, thank you! I plan on going with crop king for lettuce too. How often do you start new seeds for your lettuce? Do you transplant weekly or do you keep picking off what you have growing? I’m trying to figure how many channels I need and such. Right now I have two totes with 9 in each but I can’t really add more to it.

Thank you Tony! I’m happy to hear that you liked this video! I start seeds for lettuce approx every 3 weeks. In regards to harvesting, I usually harvest the whole head of lettuce. Sometimes we do pick off some leaves depending on our needs for salads and how long it takes for new seeds to germinate. The great thing about the crop king Nft is that you can harvest one or two heads and put new plants to replace them without any fuss. The other thing that is great is that the lids come off to clean very easily. I usually clean them out after a complete harvest and life cycle of lettuce. Now, this is what I do with my setup, it might be different from your setup, ie: lights, nutrients and so on, just try to keep a record on the time you seeded and the time to harvest and how much you consume to keep a steady production. It’s hard to say exactly, how to keep the product going. I hope this helps somehow. In regards to the channels I bought 10’ lengths because that’s all I could get. I heard that they sell 4 ft lengths. It all depends on your setup to what length you want. I really believe that it’s better to buy these channels that are true Nft, and not build your own. As you can see in the tour, I spent a little bit of time designing the most compact and versatile indoor garden room and maximized the space. Needless to say, we don’t buy any veggies from the grocery store and I supply my family and friends with fresh and very tasty veggies. Oh and having little fans for air movement are also key. Ed, this is so awesome! Can you share your secret of how you got your arugula to look like that?! I get maybe 2, 3 or maybe 4 harvests from mine, and then it starts to get bitter and bolt... how many seeds do you plant? Are you using rocket arugula? Any other tips you can provide would be appreciated... THANK YOU!

Thank you so much! I only plant one seed per, cube. I’m using the masterblend tomato formula but I do a little less than recommended. So, MB, magnesium sulphate, calcium nitrate. 10 grams of Mb tomato (the 4-18-38) 5 grams of magnesium sulphate (aka Epsom salts) 10 grams of calcium nitrate per 5 gallons of regular tap water. Then I ph the mix to 6.0 ph. The nft system does the rest. I think our spinach is about 2 months old and is sweet as pie and as green and strong as you have seen it. I have a harvest video coming up soon, you will be able to see how beautiful it is. Beyond what I just told you, I don’t know what else is making them grow like that. The funny thing is I’m only using led shop lights to grow all my leafy greens. I talk about these lights a little in my radish video. I can’t remember the seeds I’m using, I will have to take a pic and add it to our KZfaq community post for you or if your on Facebook send me a message and I will share the type of seeds. @@idealdirecthomeimprovement1639 Thank you! I think adjusting the pH is the one thing that I'm not consistently doing... do you add just one drop at a time of Up or Down, or more than that? I've run into a problem before of adding too much of either one and then I have to adjust it.

@@carolynwilhelm my tap water starts off at around 7.4 after adding the nutrients the ph goes down to around 6.8. When I ph my solution i add a couple drops at a time, mix and check the ph after adding every time and add only a drop until I get it to what I need. Ph down is much stronger than ph up. It takes a lot of ph up to correct. I try to avoid using the ph up because its just harder to adjust. At the end of the day, I would always just do a couple drops of ph down at a time to avoid playing catch up. You have to be patient when adjusting the ph. I can’t really say the exact millilitres because every ph solution has a different concentration. Having a good quality ph meter is also key. I hope that helps.

I'm going to be putting a Diva cuke seedling in a J-pellet, but once it gets to a good size for transplanting, do I need to remove that outer cover of the J-pellet (like you did in your radishes video), or can I just put it in the 3-inch netcup as is? And thanks for the info about testing the pH, etc!

@@carolynwilhelm howdy! Great question! I would put the seed into the jiffy pellet, exactly like you said. (Ready for transplant after the first true leaves.) you don’t have to remove the outer mesh. I don’t, I only do that to the radishes and carrots. Cucumbers are very sensitive and don’t like when their roots are disturbed. The same way you saw me transplant the bean plants in this video without removing the mesh or washing the roots out is exactly how I transplant, cucumbers, tomatoes, peppers and sugar snap peas and they go directly into the 3” net cup, clone collar and you are done😉 It’s always a pleasure to help!
