I REALLY hope they stick to the books as closely as possible. Sure i can understand certain things being changed to fit the new medium, things such as certain thoughts one of the character has being integral to the story.. but if translated directly you would just have a man staring into space.. without the public being aware of the stuff going on in that characters head. so that scene might be changed so the character might silently say those words to himself or something like that. As long as we don´t get another I.Robot, Locke And key or IT movie it might work...

With you 100% on your "two cents". Actually, I'm surprised that it was Foundation and not Hyperion that ended up being adapted first. For me, Hyperion lends itself so much better to film or "television". Hyperion is both character- and action-driven, as well as being thoughtful, and the story of Sol Weintraub is absolutely heart-wrenching. I loved Foundation when I read it, but I wouldn't describe anything in it as "heart-wrenching". I would describe reading Foundation as an (almost) purely cerebral experience - and therefore the liberties taken in the adaptation as particularly unsurprising.

I just read Hyperion and Fall Of Hyperion last year after a decade long absence from reading and it was EXCELLENT. The world he built felt very grounded and real to me. I even loved the corny love story with Brawne and Keats. The Technocore and how it functioned was such an awesome, vast way to depict future AI. And THE SHRIKE is so mysterious and powerful. Gah I can't wait to see The Priests Tale on screen.

2 things. 1. I notice that our bookshelves look very similar...2. I gotta say, I'm a little nervous about this one. If I'd been older when the Lynch Dune came out, I would have had more of an opinion, and probably would have felt the same way, i.e. AGAINST it. With Simmons books (and Hyperion in particular), I feel very strongly that it will be difficult for Hollywood to get it right. I almost cringe at the thought. Definitely agree with your suggested approach. The episodic nature of the story lends itself to 10-12 installment version, vs a big budget film release. However, rather than see Hyperion, I'd like to see another brilliant Simmons "property" - Ilium/Olympos made into movies. Those stories would make SPECTACULAR large budget movie productions.

Villeneuve would definitely be amazing and the best ik in recent times to do epic scale sci fi which is so grounded & lets us immerse in the monolithic influences which makes us feel insignificant. But then again he'll be so invested in Dune & might probably be exhausted that he might take a break sci fi genre a few years(I don't blame him if he wants to & i want to him do other stuff as well). The next best thing i can think of is Alex Garland. Be it *Ex-Machina* , *Devs* mini series which i absolutely love & the phenomenonal *Annihilation* series(ik a bit of a departure from Vandermeers book & didn't really focus on the fear of unknown & more focused on the intimate human nature & our tendency to self destruct. I'm not a fan of the changes but i definitely got to respect it for what it is in subsequent watches) One thing i can't deny is his display of body horror & extraterrestrial body design influences are so great that i could really see him making a design of *Shrike* which would be so terrifiying and alien. Now I'm afraid he might take some liberties (i so wish he doesn't) then we'll have a really great & true adaptation of Hyperion ever. And make it a series. Please🙏🏻. I really hoped Hyperion would be an HBO production but, oh well🤷🏻

Hyperion Cantos is one of my favorite sci-fi series, so this makes me both happy and a little scared how they are going to approach it. On the one hand, a series would make the most sense given the structure of the first novel, on the other hand if someone is going to bring this world to life I want to see it on the biggest screen possible! It could be possible to tell the story in a different way, get all of the tales intercut in the first half and have them meet up and travel the sea of grass together for the next part.

Actually, Cloud Atlas by Wachowski was pretty good in telling 6 stories at a time. In the book they're being told one by one from 1st to 6th (till the mid of each story, except for the 6th which is a full story) and back again. But in the movie they put it all together into a solid story and created one big 3 hour movie, using different types of editing. So I think maybe there is a way to make a movie from Hyperion book.

Hyperion could only be a long series but if they try to GoT-i-fy it, making it grittier and sexier than it needs to be then it will suck.

There is a battle with the Shrike in either book 3 or 4 that is epic. Makes Fedmahn Kassad's battle in book 2 seem a bit tame, believe it or not.

First Dune, then Fondation, and now Hyperion ? Guess I REALLY have to read all those greats books again. But I fear remembering too much, even after more than 20 years, and it's a pretty big time investment to do it again....

A year late to the party. Hyperion (as well as the second book) is one of my all time favorite sci-fi books but at the same time one of those works where I am not sure if I even want to see an adaption. I will never forget the experience of reading it for the first time and being taken in by the sad, fascinating, depressing and bittersweet tale of Father Duré. One thing that always strikes me with Dan Simmons is his love for literature, his love for poetry. It is a central part of his work, interwoven with the story he tells. Which makes it very, very hard to think of an adaption for Hyperion that can do justice to that central aspect of the books while at the same time offer enough entertainment to find a big enough audience. It would have to be something experimental, probably like old soviet films (Solaris, Stalker and so on) or a Kubrick movie. All of which can be challenging to watch even for fans of that kind of movie.

Fantastic! I enjoyed your video on the Hyperion Cantos and just bought the books. So I look forward to seeing it adapted and like you I hope that it is adapted as a streaming series and not a movie so it can include more of the books! As always an entertaining and informative video.

Just to summarize the history of this project: It was previously meant to be a movie at Warner Brothers, then went to Syfy to become a miniseries. During that period, Bradley Cooper became attached to it, and now it's back at WB as a movie again. This has been "in development" for many years, so we'll see what actually happens, although Cooper is apparently looking for a director.

Dan Simmons is a gift to us all and the Hyperion Cantos is his masterwork. It's astounding to think that the first book was published in 1989, some of its ideas still feel fresh, if not ahead of time. I've been waiting what feels like forever for the Hyperion Cantos to be adapted to video. Hopefully as a mini-series or series of films, there's no filler in these books and it would be almost criminal to rush through any of it. I want to see the Shrike in action!

I check in every five years to see if anyone is actually going to adapt Hyperion...excited to see this video! I agree that is has to be a series. If done right, it could be one of the greatest science fiction series of all time. I hope whoever is in charge takes inspiration from The Terror miniseries (highly recommended, as well as the book). I think they did a great job at giving the story the depth it needed across a single season and it was brilliantly cast. The first season of Hyperion could be incredible...the influences Dan Simmons drew on for each story could give it massive appeal across a wide audience. From the Romeo and Juliet of Remembering Siri, the hard-boiled noir of The Long Good-Bye, the military sci-fi of The War Lovers, the body horror of The Man who Cried God...it's all there if someone had, as Ellie Arroway once said, "the tiniest bit of vision".

Definitely worth keeping an eye on this one. Should be good if all goes well. I watched Dune last weekend and was more than pleased with the presentation, especially Jessica’s portrayal. It felt more accurate to what the sisterhood would train young girls to become. The Baron clutching the ceiling like a child was compelling, too.
