Here's how I changed the transmission fluid on my 2012 Hyundai Elantra Touring.
Tools I used:
Tarp - www.harborfreight.com/7-ft-4-...
Scraper - www.harborfreight.com/4-piece...
Boxes
Torque wrench
10mm and 17mm socket wrench
Pliers to remove hose clamp
Replacement Parts:
Replacement Filter BECK/ARNLEY 0440363 {#4632123000} - www.rockauto.com/en/catalog/h...
6.6 quarts transmission fluid
Amsoil - www.amsoil.com/shop/by-produc...
OR Hyundai OEM SPIII transmission fluid (never tried this, don't know how legit or good this is) - www.amazon.com/Genuine-Hyunda...
Torque Settings:
8 lb ft for gasket
30 lb ft for the drain plug
==================================
Here's the general procedure that I followed from the service manual (minus the transmission filter change).
Replacement
If you have a fluid changer, use this changer to replace the fluid. If you do not have a fluid replace the fluid by the following procedure.
1. Disconnect the hose, which connects the transmission and the oil cooler (inside the radiator).
2. Start the engine and let the fluid drain out.
Running conditions : "N" range with engine idling
3. Remove the drain plug(A) from the bottom of the transmission case to drain the fluid.
When new, automatic transmission fluid should be red, The red dve is added so the assembly plant can identify it as transmission fluid and distinguish it from engine oil or antifreeze. The red dve, which is not an indicator of fluid quality, is not permanent. As the vehicle is driven the transmission fluid will begin to look darker. The color may eventually appear light brown.

The engine should be stopped within one minute after it is started. If the fluid has all drained out before then, the engine should be stopped at that point.
4. Install the drain plug via the gasket, and tighten it the specified torque.
Tightening torque :
40~50 Nm (4.0~5.0kgf.m, 28.9~36.2lb-ft)
5. Pour the new fluid in through the oil filler tube.
Stop pouring if the full volume of fluid cannot be poured in.
6. Repeat the procedure in step (2).
7. Pour the new fluid in through the oil filler tube.
8. Reconnect the hose, which was disconnected in step (1) above, and firmly replace the oil level gauge.
(In case of this "replace", this means after wiping off any dirt around the oil level gauge, insert it into the filler tube.)
9. Start the engine and run it at idle for 1~2 minutes.
10. Move the select lever through all positions, and then move it to the "N" or "P" position.
11. Drive the vehicle until the fluid temperature rises to the normal temperature (70~80°C(158~176°F)), and then check the fluid level again. The fluid level must be at the HOT mark.
12. Firmly insert the oil level gauge into the oil filler tube.

It’s okay. I ended up not tightening the oil filter all the way one time on my Chevy Equinox. Turned it on and oil was everywhere. Had to walk to the autozone and back.

I drained my pan first then disconnected the hose and it only sputtered oil out for about 60 seconds.. less than half a quart, so it's really not better than to just drain and fill. Next time I'll save the wear on the pump and just drain the pan via the drain plug.

Good to note... This procedure was the one specified in the Hyundai Elantra Touring service manual: If you have a fluid changer, use this changer to replace the fluid. If you do not have a fluid replace the fluid by the following procedure. 1. Disconnect the hose, which connects the transmission and the oil cooler (inside the radiator). 2. Start the engine and let the fluid drain out. Running condition: "N" range with engine idling CAUTION: The engine should be stopped within one minute after it is started. If the fluid has all drained out before then, the engine should be stopped at that point. 3. Remove the drain plug from the bottom of the transmission case to drain the fluid. ... Hyundai says it is ok for the pump for a minute, but I'm sure it's all on us at this point if it breaks. :)

How much oil did you end up spilling and how much did you manage to catch in the basin? Secondly did you get any oil out of the torque converter and were you adding oil to the transmission when you were running the engine with the bottom hose disconnected? Failure to do so could damage the transmission. How much transmission oil did you put back into the transmission?

Now that it's 3 years later, what are your thoughts on Amsoil? I'm curious, what drove you towards Amsoil in the first place?

Amsoil synthetic has worked pretty well for me. I switched over after bringing it to a shop in Florida that used it for an oil change. The owner recommended it and I thought it worked pretty well. I regularly test my oil and have successfully run my car on extended length oil changes (10k-15k miles) with no issue. Made me a happy customer that I decided to trust their products for my other fluids in the vehicle. As for the automatic transmission, I'm happy to report I haven't had any issues after the AT fluid change. Everything shifts as well as I can remember from when I first bought the car 10 years ago. Mind you, my car only has a little over 90k miles on it so it doesn't get as much heavy use as a lot of other cars. No problems with the power train, so a happy customer here.

@@christophernottoli671 Look for an inch pound torque wrench. 1 foot pound = 12 inch pound. So you'll be looking to set it to 96 inch pounds... It's very little torque - be careful not to strip the screws! Here's one on amazon that does what you need. www.amazon.com/TEKTON-24320-4-Inch-Torque-2-26-22-6/dp/B00C5ZL2EG?ref_=fsclp_pl_dp_1

Make sure you replace timing belt . Take it to the shop for that. These engines blow up if not replaced in timely manner.

I have a second vehicle at this point - I saw some videos on replacing the timing belt and it looks like an interesting project. If I have the time, I might be interested in trying it myself. I already changed the water pump and alternator belt. I've been checking the timing belt every few years and so far, it was in good condition, but I think it is time to check again. I'm coming up to 100k miles on my car. Thanks for commenting!

How has your experience been using Amsoil?
@jonathanDIYs
@jonathanDIYs 5 жыл бұрын
Amsoil has worked very well so far. I have been using it for oil and sending it to blackstone labs for testing. They say that the oil has been performing very well and that I can safely do 15000 mile oil changes. This is the first time I'm using it for transmission fluid, so i'll have to wait another 30-50k miles before I can really say. So far though, it shifts very well and everything has been working just fine.

I don't know exactly since I spilled quite a bit on the floor. Somewhere between 4-5. I was surprised that I wasn't getting nearly the entire 6.6 liters capacity that it states in the manual. I wonder if some fluid was stuck in the torque converter.

Why not remove the drain plug to drain your transmission ?
@jonchanvlogs
@jonchanvlogs 4 жыл бұрын
John Everson good question. Because you only end up draining 1/2 of the transmission fluid that way. The service manual actual describes draining the transmission fluid in this fashion if you don’t have the fancy reverse pump thing. This is the most effective way to ensure you replace all the fluid.
