How is it really like working as a hawker? To find out, I went down to one of Singapore's most famous hawker centre, Newton Food Centre, and worked as a hawker assistant. What are some struggles and happiness of running a hawker stall? Join me and Ah Huat as we discover the reality of being a hawker.
Special thanks to Ah Huat at Guan Kee 53 Halal Seafood for being part of this vlog. Thanks to my viewer Lip for introducing me to the hawkers and everyone who saw my Instagram post and visited Newton Food Centre as customers.

Thanks for sharing the great video! Several of my relatives work as hawkers and I have helped them in the past as hawker assistant. It is really tough work. For stalls catered to the breakfast and lunch crowd, most hawkers need to wake up at 3 or 4am, get to the stall to prepare the food and everything must be ready by 6-7am. For lunch/dinner, work will end really late. As what Ah Huat said, working 12hrs is typical and majority of the stalls only rest 1 day per week. Customers really should appreciate and understand these hawker heroes. Without them and their hard work, we will not be enjoying affordable delicious food.

Don't know why, for some reason today, yr video has an interesting vibe coz you are wearing the shoes of a hawker. I see that you are using aiyah, ah (tough ah) very instinctively like a local, lol 😁🤣🤣. I see you more like busy filming away and when you ate the ice kachang as a reward for yr "hard work", I thought that was so dramatically funny of you, lol😅😅. BTW all the customers were so nice and polite to you that it felt so "staged (acting)", I am thinking "are you sure these ppl are yr customers...?". The sambal or chilli sting ray is nice lah, used to be one of my faves 😋😋💦💦. And the ice kachang brings me back to yesteryears 🤗😇. Lol. I thought the video will end w. all the "heavy" packets of food and then suddenly heard yr MIL's voice, lol. Overall cute video. N hey, surprised that yr Mandarin has improved tremendously, you were actually conversing in the language, ganbatte ne 👍😍🤗.

Ghib, I do have a suggestion if you want to do something similar like this again. Perhaps you may want to enroll in a food hygiene course and engage someone to hold your camera while you help with food preparations in hawker stalls. I think that'll be a more accurate representation of your one day life as a hawker. As mentioned by Ah Huat, hawkers typically work on average 12 hours a day, sometimes 14 if they serve breakfast, lunch and dinner. Most of the stalls at Newton Food Centre are owned so they don't worry about rent but Covid has taken a toll on their businesses because they cater to mainly night crowds. You are right that hawkers don't earn much at the end of each day after paying utilities, wages and most of the money goes to rents, even if supplies don't cost a lot.
