Today I visited Tiong Bahru district in Singapore for the first time. Tiong Bahru is one of the oldest estates in Singapore. You can feel the history and culture, and what's interesting is that it is also famous for hip cafes and shops. But what surprised me most was the air raid shelter at the basement of an HDB (Public housing). The monkey god temple was fascinating as well. Who knew Tiong Bahru had all of these?
00:45 | Where is Tiong Bahru? Briefing
02:15 | Sneaking Inside an old HDB
03:15 | Air Raid Shelter
04:31 | Passing by an old HDB
05:03 | Food Hunt at Tiong Bahru Food Hawker Centre
09:00 | Cafe Street
After a long stroll, I confirmed that Tiong Bahru has something more to offer than cool cafes. A must go spot in Singapore! Huat!!

Glad you love Tiong Bahru, it's hawker is my favourite one in Singapore. There are many good food there, i used to go there every morning for breakfast. Let me intro u to my fav (personal fav) In the market: 1. 238 coffee stall #02-81 , best coffee here 2. Yuan ji 源记 fishball noodle #02-72, simple old school but v tasty. (Had been eating with this minced meat noodle kway teow soup from uncle and aunt for over a decade) 3. Tiong bahru Lor Mee #02-80 (a lot of ppl love 178 lor mee, but i tried both many times and come to the conclusion I preferred Tiong Bahru Lor Mee next to 238 coffee, the gravy is nicer and more ingredients) 4. Hwa yuen porridge #02-78 good decent and piping hot porridge. 5. Teck Seng Soya bean milk #02-69 , must try their ultra smooth bean curb bowl 6. Koh brother pig's organ soup #02-29 worth a try, their glutinous rice in pig's intestine 7. Zhong yu yuan wei wanton noodle #02-30 Wanton noodle is so so but do try their signature 不见天, delicious. 8. HarisAnn Delights #02-25 loads up all your fav nonya kueh here, i recommend their onek onek 9. Tiong Bahru Teochew Kueh #02-02, as it's name, try their traditional rice kueh and soon kueh with sweet sauce and chilli. Outside along the road, 1. Ah Chang Porridge 65 Tiong Poh Road 2. Por Kee eating house 69 Seng poh lane 3. Old Tiong Bahru BKT 58 Seng Poh Road 4. Loo's Hainanese Curry rice and There is a Mee Pok stall here also nice 71 Seng poh road Enjoy!

Excellent coverage of Tiong Bahru heritage area, especially with all many wonderful hawker food. Though I’d add on 1 shop to spice things up. There’s this noodle shop called “Shannxi Noodles”. Although its from China, they have this noodle called “Biang Biang mian (面)”. What makes this intriguing is the character “Biang”... which is perhaps the MOST complex Chinese character with 57 strokes. Check out the noodles... its quite special ! On top of all the great food highlighted. Tiong Bahru is definitely one of many S’porean foodie favourites.

Welcome to Tiong Bahru! If you come by another time, some recommendations for TB: in Hawker- Teck Seng Soya Bean Milk (uncle's tao huey zui is very tok gong-teach you new word) - sells out before noon in Hawker- HarriAnn's Delight (Nonya Kueh & Glutinous Rice-ask for sweet+savoury mixed-uncle Harry has opened outlets already but this is his flagship) - also sells out before noon Others have mentioned, in one of the coffeeshops around the area, there's Loo's Hainanese Curry Rice (wah this is FAVOURITE! must try the pork chop okay) and Galicier (it is also good) Another viewer mentioned Beo Crescent, if you come here.. in the hawker, there's Kia Xiang Du Du (Tutu Kueh-order the big ones, coconut/peanut both are very good), plenty of good mains option - carrot cake, lor mee (request to top up for more of the crunchy topping), spinach soup noodles etc.. in the block beside the hawker, there's No Name Hainanese Curry Rice (if you prefer crunchy pork chop..this is for you) and Happy Oven bakery..there's many more- I haven't even mention the 'L' shaped hawker!

I recommend Sumo Big Prawn from Ang Mo Kio 628 Market. They sell lobster/crayfish noodles. Prices can go up to 35 bucks for a bowl. Seems a little steep for a noodle stall in a hawker centre, but their serving is generous and the prawn stock is packed full of fresh prawn flavour! Also, Plain Vanilla Bakery has the best cupcakes I've ever had. Most cupcakes r dry and boring, but their cupcakes look really exquisite, most importantly, MOIST. Some of the flavours such as cinnamon brown sugar (my favourite!) are a tad on the sweet side tho.

Since you are so intrigued by the air raid shelters, fyi HDB blocks built in the late 80's also have public air raid shelters built into the basements below the void decks. This building plan was carried out for about a decade till it switched to the current plan of building bomb shelter "rooms" within each individual flat. These basement air raid shelters are currently still in place, often occupied by minimarts, childcare and tuition centers during peacetime, with clauses built into the leases for tenants to have to clear out within a certain amount of time should the authorities declare emergencies. They are rather inconspicuous though with just a door at the void decks. To find them you need to know which are the blocks built in the 80's-90's. This is an interesting topic that you may want to make a video about.

The low Tiong Bahru apartments are what the old uncle told you as "Pre-HDB Flats", they were the first few public housing that Singaore Govt built in 50s-60s to quickly house the village (to be honest...slums) community there, so they look uniquely different from the other typical HDB blocks.

I love this neighbourhood and live very close by. I walk by dog in the Tiong Bahru estate daily. If you are going to make another video, do also feature Tiong Bahru Galicier Pastry, Blk 55 Tiong Bahru Rd, #01-39, 160055. I am so sure you will love their traditional nonya kueh.
