For 2022 Jeep has given its popular Compass Trailhawk an extreme interior make-over based on the upscale Wagoneer. Does this premium interior combined with exclusive off-road features make this the small crossover to get in 2022? We bought one in Houston Texas and drive it all the way back to Seattle, Washington to find out.

I am so grateful I found your video! I've never owned a brand new vehicle before and I've never spent more than 20 grand on a vehicle before until we bought our 2020 honda talon last year. We have fallen in love with the off road lifestyle and the 4x4 capabilities and We are also in need of a more fuel efficient vehicle (have nothing but diesel trucks) so we are seriously considering the 2022 trailhawk so we can hopefully have the best of both worlds! I was worried we are making a mistake spending 35 grand on a compass and I'm so grateful you put so much time, energy and money in to making this video so now I know we are making the right decision for us! Thanks again brother I appreciate you!

This was a really excellent review & video Ryan. Its very interesting that a lot of the AWD components are essentially 'off the shelf' parts used by many different brands, I didn't know that. I have also found the 9 Speed trans to be substantially smoother in our '21 Renegade TH and more refined when compared to our 2017 Cherokee. You've already demonstrated perfectly, in your 3 videos, the 'sweet' spot for vehicles like this. (I really liked the Compass TH when shopping, but preferred the 1.3L Turbo option on the Renegade. Plus it was $4k cheaper...we're very happy with it after a year of ownership.)

I looked into the smaller Jeep models, but I got the Cherokee it ended up being priced almost identical to the Compass after incentives. Plus I got the 2.0T win-win. The Cherokee uses many components supplied by American Axle & Manufacturing.

Excellent vid, man. My roommate had a 2017 Renegade Trailhawk and we took that off road on similar trails, no issues, fun, but it was painfully slow on the highway. The transmiaaion shifted slowly and that still seems to be the case, but the shifts were very smooth. Just one problem at 30,000 miles around the end of the lease- a sticking front brake caliper. Not one other problem during the 39 mo lease, except for that it was still slow. 😁

I got stuck renting a Jeep Compass a couple years ago, it was the biggest piece of crap I've ever driven. I can't say one positive thing about the experience, except that it eventually ended. I’ve got an ‘87 XJ that runs like new, and is super capable and reliable with 350k miles. I’ve got a lemony yellow (silver to the eye) 2019 compass that I can’t trust to keep running. Bought it because I’ve had such good luck with my XJ, boy was I mistaken. It’s in the shop for the third time in as many months with dead batteries. Dealer claims everything in the charging system has checked out (though the second time they claimed they found a loose cable??-how do you miss that?). Still in the shop, and they said again everything checked out but the batteries. I asked if they root caused the battery issue, and they have no answer. They can keep it until they prove to me it’s reliable at this point. What a piece! I never thought I’d say this but, stay away from Jeeps IMO.

The 2.4L TigerShark has always been a course, comparatively inefficient engine, but paired to the 6A transmission in my very-well-equipped 2014 Patriot Freedom Edition ($24K out the door), it has given me no cause to complain. Yet I don't consider it a suitable powerplant when the purchase price rises into the upper $30Ks. Therefore, I'd forego the luxury/high-tech appointments of the Compass in favor of the Cherokee Trailhawk with its much more satisfying 3.2 V6. Thanks for the top-notch and insightful video!

We had brand-new Compass trailhawk 2018 and had so many problems: oíl leaked, suspension broke very early, battery stopped working in the first year, panoramic sunroof went loose, the display had and issue and was replaced , went in limp mode, start/stop function stop working after the first year and the service in the dealership was terrible. The Compass is the best looking vehicle that Jeep makes in my opinion and it would be near the top of my shortlist if it was available with the 2 liter turbo. NA engines just run out of steam where I live due to the altitude. Really great video though, a perfect little escape for me on a Sunday afternoon. I’ve been craving a road trip but I need to stay safe until I’m done with chemo so I’ve stayed home for the better part of the past 2 years. This vid really helped scratch that itch, so thank you!

Since you aren't allowed to ride on unpaved road almost everywhere that's not the Compass that will sell the most here :D 29:07 thank you for the new wallpaper! :3 29:09 another one! 29:43 too many gorgeous shot everytime, DST is now my official wallpaper provider :D

Thanks for pointing out that car enthusiast reviewers overemphasize the need for speed. I have a Forester Wildernesses and it’s plenty fast for me, I have full confidence in passing on the highway and it gets up mountain roads faster than I care to go without any feel of overtaxing the engine with A/C on full blast and 4 adult passengers. I have never driven a sports car so to me it seems fast, it’s the fastest car I have ever owned.

all the people here wishing it was turbo. But a turbo is junk when off roading. piping can get loose with vibration and you loose all your power. Also the dust can sand blast your turbo if your air filter cant stop it. 180hp is good you dont need more on a small suv like this... Also small turbo 4 cylinder required premium fuel another downside...

I prefer your reviews over other's. You do a slew of videos in real world driving scenarios even with the offroad course you built and use, it proves the AWD/4WD systems are either good or they're not, you put them to the test unlike other channels that just stop at the first wheel slip and claim the vehicle is garbage....you actually let the system do its job or at least give it the opportunity to do so. I'd really love to know what got you into doing automotive reviews, and how you got started in the field of reviews, and buying test vehicles like what criteria do you use to decide I'm buying this vehicle, but I'll just do the reviews on this other vehicle using available press vehicles?

There's a $4,000 rebate in California on these right now on 2022 models. A local dealer has a Latitude that has the same equipment as the Forester Premium. The Forester is $34,000 and the dealer won't budge. The Compass is $28,000 with the rebate and dealer discount. Probably can get them down a bit more. That's a huge difference for very similar equipment and performance. I'm seriously considering one. Rebate is over in three days so I better decide! lol

I’m not sure if it’s programmed in but I recently purchased a 2021 compass trail hawk and was disappointed with the power. But after 6000 miles I noticed it seamed to have much more power. I noticed the same thing on my 2015 Ram power wagon after 6000 miles it had better power. Pulling my 35 foot travel trailer I noticed after 6000 miles it had so much more power that briskly taking off pulling the trailer that the torque of the motor would slightly lift one side of truck same as the eighteen wheeler that I would drive at work. So I’m wondering if computer limits power until full break in around 6000 miles.

The cost-cutting philosophy of Chrysler/Jeep/Dodge: "Make sure it looks and drives good, so people will buy it. Cut costs where people can't see them, so they only have to deal with it after they already gave us their money." The opposite is very evident with vehicles like the Maverick. You can see the cost cutting measures (cheaper, harder plastic, less gimmicky features, etc).

Nice review, you do some of the best stuff on KZfaq. I did not see mentioned if it has a spare tire. I will not even consider any SUV/Crossover that lacks one and the FS spare is one reason I bought a 2021 Outback Onyx. As to leather and sunroofs, I dislike both and that is also part of why I bought my Outback Onyx- cloth seats are more comfortable and do not need to be ventilated like leather or vinyl. Interested to see if the reliability has improved for whatever Chrysler calls itself these days (Stellantis until the next merger). The biggest thing keeping me from buying any Jeep is the build reputation of Chrysler and its successors.

It has a space saver spare. BUT. It can fit a full size in the bay. We’ve since upgraded ours.

I own a 2015 Jeep Renegade Trailhawk with essentially the same AWD system. Swap out the tires for Falken Wildpeak AT3 W’s and you’d be surprised with how well the vehicle handles snow both on-road and off-road. You live in Seattle as well, right? I was able to easily drive up Queen Anne hill and other very steep grades when it snowed 4-6 inches over the holidays. Also made it through Snoqualmie Pass (before it was opened to the public) when it was closed due to 3 feet of snow on I-90. I’m a first responder and need a vehicle that can go almost anywhere in case I can’t use my department-issued vehicle (Ford Escape). I’ve driven 120,000+ miles in my Jeep Renegade and it has never left me stranded. Reason I didn’t get a Jeep Wrangler is because it’s 4WD system is primarily for off-road as it is ill-advised to use 4-high on pavement due to issues with crabbing.

Lastly, my only complaint is the 9-speed transmission. My Jeep has the same 2.4L Tiger Shark engine and I swear it hates this transmission. It feels like 9th gear is too tall for any freeway driving with more than a 1% grade. The transmission overall feels like it’s upshifted one gear too high. As a result, I normally override the auto and manually select gears.

Jeep did re-tune the transmission for 2022 and it's better. Far less hunting than the older model, but there's still a bit of it. Also i did upgrade to FWP AT3Ws and theyre a good match for this one. We have a snow video coming out with them installed this weekend.

Wow looks very nice 👍. Good review. If it came with a single sunroof and a 6 cylinder it would kill a bmw hands down.
