VTEC Just Kicked In!
The S200) features a 2 liter, inline four cylinder with dual overhead cams and the ever-popular VTEC. It produces 240 HP at 8,300 RPM, and 153 lb-ft of torque at 7500 RPM. The engine screams all the way to 9,000 RPM, and had the highest specific output of any naturally aspirated production vehicle on the market when it was released, only to be dethroned by the Ferrari 458 about 10 years later, when they too decided 9,000 RPM was a cool idea.
The S2000 incorporates carbon fiber into the cylinder bore liner. Essentially the aluminum alloy is poured over cylinder cores which are made up of aluminum and carbon fibers, and these fibers absorb the molten aluminum. Then the cylinders are bored out, removing most of this material, but leaving a composite cylinder wall about half a millimeter thick. This remaining layer is reinforced with carbon and aluminum fibers, however it’s still integral with the rest of the block. Honda claims this gives it additional strength, and allows for using larger bores within the same size external engine block. The same technology is used in the 3.2L Acura NSX. Keeping strength in mind, the S2000’s pistons are made of forged aluminum, a first for Honda.
The transmission had to be designed as compact as possible since the engine is pushed so far back. To do this, Honda kept all six close-ratio speeds and reverse on two parallel shafts to keep the design narrow, and both of these shafts are coupled at the output end, which helps to reduce the load on the gear synchronizers, and thus allows for smaller sized gears. All of the power eventually makes its way back to the rear wheels, the torque split among the tires through a Torsen limited-slip differential.
The chassis focuses on keeping the center of gravity low. The vehicle has a 50/50 weight distribution, and you can see the engine is tucked behind the front axle, giving it a lower polar moment of inertia by keeping the mass more central in the vehicle. It also features what Honda calls a high x-bone frame which keeps the car rigid, obviously important for convertibles which don’t have a hard top aiding rigidity. The frame comes in at the front on both sides, comes in through the floor tunnel, and then splits back out at the rear. There are of course side members as well. One of the keys to the x-bone design is that the frame rails at the front and rear are at the same height as the center tunnel, and Honda claims this gives it similar torsional rigidity to a closed top, yet better bending rigidity than open or closed top vehicles. Now with the exception of the aluminum hood, the body is all steel.
The suspension up is an “in-wheel double wishbone” design, called this because they’ve shaped the components so much of it can fit within the 16 inch wheels. This helps with packaging, and is a major contributing factor to having a low hood and rear deck line. There’s a double wishbone both up-front and in the rear. The front suspension also has a fairly low roll center, which helps keep the wheel perpendicular to the ground while cornering, and it minimizes suspension jacking and track width changes while cornering which helps with steering feel.

I love how you're such a big KZfaqr that's bought a realistic car, compared to everyone else buying GTR's/Lambo's/Ferrari's. I feel as if it allows viewers to connect with you on a more personal level, also gives you lots more money for modifications ;)

+AMBush Drift I like affordable cars. When I was younger I definitely oooh'd and ahhh'd over the latest and greatest supercars, but I appreciate companies that make affordable fun. The new MX-5 is the best example, you'll smile just as wide as driving a Ferrari for 1/10th the price. Maybe one day I'll do something a bit exotic, but truthfully there are amazing used cars out there for great prices. S2K is a great example.

As a Honda technician, I beg you to leave the stock intake and air box on the vehicle. It's pretty much perfect the way it is and we see so many of these have issues with after market intakes and filters. If you have any other questions I would love to give some legit from the manufacturer answers!

Thanks for chiming in! My next video will go over some of the problems I have, so I'd love to hear your opinion on a few things. Would you recommend OEM TCT, or one of the "lifetime warranty" aftermarket solutions, or simply sanding down the old worm gear in the TCT?
@bignitro50
@bignitro50 7 жыл бұрын
By that do you mean the timing chain tensioner?

Yep, tensioner. Seems like there are a few options, curious which you think is best?
@bignitro50
@bignitro50 7 жыл бұрын
If you don't mind me asking, why do you think the tct should be replaced? They are usually good for the life of the vehicle. Is the chain making a noise right now? But to answer your question I would definitely go oem, The after market ones seem to be slightly weaker and allow just a little more play.

Congrats! I bought a 2000 S2000 in September of 1999 when it was first released in the US. Put down a deposit with a dealer nine months before that and could barely wait! At the time all the magazines tested it against the BMW Z3 and Porsche Boxster and it won every test hands down. It wasn't until BMW released the Z3 M Roadster and Porsche released the Boxster S were these cars able to compete with the S2000. The only mods I put on it were 17" wheels and tires (it came with 16") and an after market exhaust. Years later I added an intake system, mostly for the sound. I ran a lot of autocrosses and HPDEs with it for several years which it was absolutely excellent at, and I bought track tires for the stock wheels. The transmission was rebuilt under warranty (the "stacking clearance" problem) and again several years later, when the clutch needed to be replaced. Other than that I just did normal maintenance and it was bullet proof. The top did need to be replaced at 10 years and I replaced it with an aftermarket top that had a glass window which was an amazing improvement at night and in the rain! I loved that car and swore I would never sell it. In 2011 my wife and I bought her a BMW 335is Coupe. I really liked that car (especially the torque!) and decided I wanted a BMW. A friend in our BMW club let me drive his Z4 M Roadster for an afternoon and I decided that it was a worthy successor the my S2000. In July 2012 I found the perfect low-mileage 2006 Z4 M Roadster in the exact color/interior combo that I would have ordered knew and bought it. I sold the S2000, now nearly 13 years old, the next month to the parents of a neighbor boy who admired the car when he was 7 ("Wow! That's an S2000! That has the highest output per liter...naturally aspirated...etc." which he recited to me when he was 7!) They gave it to him for his 20th birthday! He still has it! I still have the Z4 M Roadster, but I just did Euro Delivery on an M4 in May. My first non-roadster since 1999!

Yes, metric would be "better", but unfortunately things in the USA are sold in imperial and all comparable cars publish their numbers in lbft. From memory Jason seems to use imperial unless there is enough math for a few conversions and then he just computes everything in metric "you guys like math, right?".

The only clue he wasn't going with a miata was the various mentioning that the Crosstrek would be handling daily driver duties and a new[ish] miata would be ideal for that. I'm still surprised that he didn't go with a new miata (that he could then drive into the ground) and a tough old truck for any practical needs. I'm guessing he takes the "internet judgement" a bit too seriously (and can't drive the weak miata). Of course when it is your income, you have to appease the allmighty internet.

@zfreak2808

I'm an engineer and I do not like a honda s2000. Why? limited production vehicle. Parts obsolescence is going to destroy economical sustainment of this vehicle. Second, 9000 rpm redline sounds great, but there are too many failure points with an engine that revs that high, especially given that the newest S2000 is now over 10 years old. Valve floating and fatigue damage are going to be substantially worse on this engine than lower redline engines. Another reason, not engineering related, is that the fan base for this vehicle is the most arrogant. They act like they drive a ferrari, but they have the budget of a mustang driver. No thanks.
@403patriot3

zfreak280 so much hate...valve float you say? FINE titanium chuck some titanium valve springs in there, good to go. OKAY it can't do what an indy car can, but neither can YOUR car...but i bet it can get better LAP TIMES THAN YOUR CAR!!!

You actually brought up an interesting point with the whole Honda/Subaru fanboy deal: usually those guys aren't really fond of each other's automotive tastes (Marty and Moog are a good example), while you've managed to find a way to appreciate both of those marques. BTW, this is a great car. I drove one once (it was about five years ago), and that was an experience I'd certainly want to re-live.

2WD NA cars are more fun than 4WD turbo cars. That is just my opinion. I got rid of a turbo Subaru as I think NA is much nicer and more enjoyable to drive. :) Apart from the steering and braking feel (none as such), Honda cars are really very well engineered IMO.

Congratulations on your new ride. It's really hard to find one in good shape where I live (Poland) but those that are, are beutiful pieces of engineering. Question - how tall are you? And how do you find the interior of the S2000 comfortable, because I was pretty sure you are somewhere ~6 ft ? I'm 6.2 ft and sadly I don't exactly 'fit' into the S2000 :( There aren't that many affordable rwd cabrios that would fit the tall people...
@EngineeringExplained
@EngineeringExplained 7 жыл бұрын
I'm 6'1'. I'm a little tall for it from a visibility standpoint with the top up, but I fit fine without my legs hitting the steering wheel. I think I actually fit better in this than the new MX-5.

Pontiac Solstice/ Saturn Sky/Opal GT. . Accommodate individuals at 6'2" nicely. .. I'm 6'2" and think I could be up to 6'4" and not have a problem... Very much an under appreciated platform that is very well engineered too👈
@TheNazreth

Thanks man!I will look for an Opel GT then... The other two are total exotics here, as neither Pontiac nor Saturn was ever sold in the region.... look nice though. Someone also told me that actually the Mazda MX-5 NA (the oldest one) has more head room than the later models. If no, then I guess I will stick to my old Forester with sunroof, a substitute of a cabrio :)

it's a clean car i love it when Honda owners actually care about their cars, one question i just saw the dyno sheet for a Honda s2000 and the wheels, and it only did 177 hp and that car is advertised at 240, and never mind the car was really well taken car off like the the yellow s2000 on this video, is the math off or did Honda over sold the 2.0 on the s2000? i think if you do the math after drive train looses that 240 becomes 210 or 200 the worse it could get is 190, again love the car I'm a fan of the s2000 but something is off.

+Engineering Explained my understanding from the sheet that i saw, car had under 125k miles and it has not been molested or messed with, but what would be the drive train loss of a 240hp motor? ( i know it depends on how efficient the drive train is but just prentend ) 220? 210?
