In this video I share with you some insights that have significantly transformed my relationship with food, particularly takeout, which I once struggled with greatly. As a psychotherapist who now helps others heal their relationship with food, I understand the complexities of emotional and psychological patterns that lead to unhealthy eating behaviors.
Like many, I used to find myself ordering takeout almost daily, driven by a cycle of emotional eating and subsequent guilt. I disliked everything about planning and preparing meals-it felt like utter chaos. This cycle of behavior left me feeling terrible about myself.
I want to offer you not just tips, but five transformative strategies that combine emotional shifts and practical actions to foster real change. These are designed to help you understand why takeout might be problematic for you, whether it’s affecting your health, finances, or emotional well-being.
1. Release the Guilt: The foundation of change begins here. You need to free yourself from the guilt associated with eating takeout. This guilt often exacerbates the problem, trapping you in a cycle of regret and repeat behavior. By releasing this guilt, you create space for clearer decision-making and self-compassion.
2. Create a Reactionary Gap: Borrowing from police training, this concept involves pausing between the desire to order takeout and the act itself. This gap allows you to reflect and choose your actions consciously, rather than acting on impulse.
3. Plan Your Takeout: Instead of spontaneous orders, plan your takeout meals. Decide a few days in advance when you will order, making it a choice rather than a compulsive reaction. This approach helps reduce the buildup of craving and pressure, allowing you to enjoy the food without guilt.
4. Embrace the Leftovers: If overeating is a concern, change your perspective on leftovers. Allow yourself to save some for later, which can help mitigate the 'last supper' binge mentality. This shift encourages more mindful eating practices and can help with portion control.
5. Explore Alternatives and Moderation: Whether it’s integrating meal kits like Gousto into your routine to reduce the stress of meal planning or having some more appealing foods around, find a balance that works for you. It's about navigating a middle path that avoids extreme behaviors while still respecting your preferences and needs.

Why do you say that? Gousto have no idea that I am sharing their product on my YT channel. I have used Gousto for several years and it genuinely helped me with food planning and getting some balance. Every person who has a Gousto account can get some money off their next box if they introduce a friend so it's not exactly a paid promotion. Even if it was, I don't think paid promotions are necessarily bad if they are being endorsed by someone who genuinely believes in their value for their audience. I like Gousto because they have hearty meals (a lot of other recipe boxes I've tried have been a bit diet-y) and you can click a button to turn off the calorie information. This is a bonus for people recovering from disordered eating. I have been approached by BetterHelp and vitamin companies to sponsor my videos and I have declined because I don't think their practices are ethical. I am careful and thoughtful about the ethical ramifications of anything I endorse.

I love these videos. I found the KZfaq algorithm target ad pop ups unethical. An ad for a chicken nugget value deal popped up because it's likely food related content link to this video? Dunno. However they creators on KZfaq have no control over this, and very little control in general on this platform. So sad.

The money is the biggest issue for me, I don’t gain weight from takeout since I order healthier options or kid meals for pickup. I hate leftovers, it’s harder to cook new meals daily. This is why I can’t break this cycle 😩

"order" your "takeout" from the grocery store. Think of the premade deli offerings as a restaurant and get it from there. It's often cheaper

Hey Sarah. The way I stopped ordering takeouts by myself was to draw a line under it and see how long I can go. My streak of not ordering takeout alone is now years long and I think there’s next to no chance I’ll break it anytime soon. I only order takeout now if I’m with another person, which is something that works for me but I might have to revise this rule soon too.

9:22 This one's a good one. Yesterday, I had a late meal because I was on a roll doing other tasks; the socially acceptable time slowly passed me by, and my parents called me while I was cooking. Yesterday I cooked too much, and I was low key too tired/peaceful (-positive story!) to eat it. I am kind of a tornado in the kitchen, but without resenting it, I nourish my soul. After deciding to put back leftovers, I'll (snack on it, while in a balance of) have a preset meal for today.

I've noticed eating a salad is like exercise for me. I never regret it afterwards, but getting the motivation and "want" to eat it is so immense that it often goes bad before i eat it. 😅/😢 I reduce barriers as much as i can (small individual bag, prepackaged, toppings) still it happens though. Havent discovered how to change that yet

I may not have used those words, but yes, I think that gentle intentions can help guide decisions that may otherwise be overanalysed (leading to mental fatigue) and some decisions ahead of time mean fewer decisions throughout the day, which saves mental energy. The important piece is to understand your own temperament well enough to recognise when this starts to feel like a lack of choice that triggers a rebellious response

@@TheBingeEatingTherapistWhat I meant by this was more about gradually learning to deal with/sit with mental fatigue, at least slowing down enough to make a good (intentional/authentic) choice. When I try to plan my next meal, or even prep (cut vegetables, cook meat, etc) what may normally take longer, I feel a little burdened. My family and I eat dinner together, sometimes it feels like everyone's watching me until I do what I plan (even when no lack of choice is felt.) or (Whether or not it's due to planning ahead) that I'm 'rushing' to make food I'm not hungry for.
