My Gibson Les Paul won't stay in tune! Is the String Butler the fix? Will it solve my Bigsby tuning issues or am I going to finally trash this Gibson Guitar?

Does the String Butler work? That is a question many ask when dealing with Gibson Les Paul tuning problems. Especially if it is caused by Bigsby tuning issues. That is a very common problem. Often because the Bigsby setup is wrong. Or simply the guitar itself is in need of a setup. I made a number of modifications to the Les Pauk Studio including installing a Bigsby with a Vibramate Kit. But Gibson Les Paul tuning stability is a real issue for many with our without a Bigsby, How can you solve Gibson tuning issues? Well, the String Butler is designed for guitars with 3 and 3 tuner configurations with issues caused by severe break angles from the nut to the tuners. And with Gibson Headstock angles, the problems are often compounded. In this video I try to address my guitar tuning problems. I show you how to install a string butler and I discuss the other things I did to try and get My Gibson Les Paul with Bigsby into game shape. I added a Tusq Nut, a Schaller roller bridge and had the guitar fully setup. And then I installed the String Butler. Did it work? Or am I tossing this guitar into the trash?

Pretty lil' G. Studio there - adding a Bigsby to help tuning issues is like adding ice for better traction 😎 (but they are cool)

Part of his tuning problem came from the break angle between the bridge and the tension bar on that B7. Unless that Vibra-Mate front mounting plate is REAL thick, you'll need to shim it so that you get a bridge break angle shallow enough to let the strings clear the back lip of the bridge. That eliminates one of the friction points, and the (slightly) more shallow break angle takes some tension off the tension bar. Makes it easier to work the Bigsby, although the tension-bar Bigsbys I've installed (B5's on a LP Special and a Mex Esquire) are still pretty stiff.

I took it in and the frets are very uneven. I gave up and pulled the Bigsby off. It could use a Plek but I’m probably not going to bother.

I've had really good luck with the string butler on my Les Paul, even after installing a vibrato (Duesenberg Les Trem). The guitar's stability was really bad before. Also, the video thumbnail is hilarious!

I’m still using the string butler but I eventually pulled off the Bigsby. I think this guitar has neck issues. I may have to do for real what you see in the thumb 😂😂😂😂

Thanks for the tip. But after this video I got fed up an pulled off the Bigsby. Seems the frets are way off. I don’t feel like plek’ing it. So it sits.

Go see 'David Sirrs' are L&M in Mississauga he is a genius guitar Tehc! I have a top range Epiphone 1960 Les Paul Tribute in Black Cherry and couldn't keep it in tune too long. Dave did what he did and now it stays in tune for week, well nearly, amazing!

I discovered there is a bow in the neck and it likely could use a plek. I’m not sure I want to spend the money. But if I’m ever out in Mississauga I’ll drop in!

great video! re tuning: are you relying on /using a tuner? I would highly recommend training your ear and only using the tuner as a base starting point. To my ears at 8:50 in the video that clean chord you play i can hear the A D and G string are all sharp and your high e is flat. Assuming you’re running 10-46’s and not squeezing too hard relying on tuning the open strings to a tuner does not work when playing- the frets on a guitar aren’t precise enough due to physics- (hence true temperament frets and compensated nuts) better sounding tuning normally needs a bit of assistance by you to tune the strings to pitch using your ears until you find the sweet spots. I have had many Gibsons and it’s almost always a case of flattening the centre strings a smidge and sharpening the 2 E /e strings (adjustment needed is tiny but chords etc will ring much truer👍

Thnx! I actually did a whole video on ear tuning. You should check it out. I'll tell you. Making these videos by myself while also trying to play guitar at the same time sometimes gets me into trouble. I do tweak tuning by ear. But sometimes when I'm shooting I get lost in the process and I often miss little things. In a video about tuning...I should have been more vigilant, that's for sure... ;-)

@@LonelyRocker awesome to know and yes fully understand as someone who was in bands before tuners existed it was always a case of making it musical and always a compromise- some younger players are shocked that no matter how many hours they spend on tuning their open strings they will be flat or sharp when fretted😀thanks again for the video

@@LonelyRocker it did more for my les paul bigsby situation than any other gear. it was worth it to me. I also have a Roller bridge. bigsby are great in theory but in most cases knock Gibsons out of tune. locking the strings down was the only way I could keep it together :)

Bigsbys are a pain in the ass. I love the look of it but if it's not factory installed properly it can be extremely inconsistent. I've wasted so much time with it over the years. I'm glad you found something that works. If I ever get my hands on one I'd be happy to try it...

@@LonelyRocker it turns a naked bigsby to more of a Floyd rose style system with the locking nut.i had to try it after watching videos of people dive bombing bigsbys then springing back to perfect tune :}
