From the research I did years ago, the blue zones (except for Loma of which the vegetarians outlive the vegans) each had their own animal/fish proteins in their diet. It’s a fallacy that a lot of vegan documentaries use to say the bluezones are plant based. When it comes to their food, it was about eating what is in season and local. We all know that even though food in a store looks fresh that in reality, it’s harvested early to make it thru shipping. Local is always better. 🙂

I have to agree with this! I think they eat lots of plant based foods, but also feel the narrative that means vegetarian isn’t quite true

I would definitely agree. I'm in Okinawa now and there is, understandably, a good amount of fish in their diets and it's even fresh in the grocery stores, but even fresher if you go to any of the fisherman wharf shops here. Another thing that wasn't mentioned about Okinawa is Mozuku Seaweed, which is also in a lot of local dishes. There is also a lot more sodium in the Japanese diet (but, they also sweat a lot in the summer months here).

I think "plant based" got co-opted by vegans and vegetarians (I'm a vegetarian so maybe I'm guilty of this lol). I personally think "plant based" originally meant plants are your base. Like as in you eat more plants than anything else. I don't think it's meant to exclude meat, dairy, eggs, and fish. I think it's just meant to put the focus on plants.

I really like the connection focus of this and the importance of community. I say that because one of my distant cousins was interviewed for the Shoah Foundation and was over 100 and talked about how she buried all her kids, her husband, her friends and was alone at that point. But having physical people around you that you connect with that combat the loneliness is wonderful ❤ thank you Keltie!

On the whole protein debate; I think it gets super confusing because we use the word 'protein' for the macronutrient but also to refer to mainly animal based products. We do know that some animal based products like highly processed meats or red meat are not good for us in certain quantities. When many people refer to those studies, they say 'protein' is not good for us. Here, it refers to not the macronutrient but to the specific foods are mainly made up of this macronutrient. Protein itself is present in so many food groups, including non-animal based products and it is essential for us to survive. The same cannot be said for certain foods that are referred to as protein.

Regarding the protein conundrum, some strategies to consider: eat more plant protein, eat more fish, chicken and turkey rather than red meats, also you can build muscle, move your body and work on mobility without specifically eating like a body builder.

I wonder if the lack of research on the “right” foods to eat to live longer is because there really isn’t a “right” way to eat. I think eating local, seasonal, fresh produce is huge, and listening to your body and honoring what it wants is huge too.

I studied abroad in Nosara and lived with a family. They ate meat with almost every meal - typically chicken or pork. Also, a big focus there is the religious community and waking up with the sun (going to bed when it gets dark). I do think that diet is important, however, there is no "blue zone" diet as each region has its own culture, and with culture comes regional food.

love these videos of diets with av realistic yet balanced and healthy mindset of them! also, about the protein - I think the blue zone mainly or heavily consume plant-based ones like beans and lentils, but you really didn't have any fish that is one of the most typical protein source here, like Japan, Italy (especially Sardinia)and Greece. p.s. team quick oatmeal haha🤣
@bogantellectual

I agree the lack of seafood was the one observation I made too. You can get more than enough protein for a healthy longevity diet just eating vegetarian sources, but if you're a high level athlete (which very few of these Blue Zone centenarians are) who is used to lots of meat, it's probably tough to make the switch overnight. Made me wonder if she doesn't like seafood? In which case, might be best to focus on more meals from the Blue Zone in Sardinia, where they (ironically) don't really eat seafood.

Singapore is now the 6th Blue Zone. I lived there for 8 years recently. They have good free healthcare, the environment is designed for walking and public transport is fantastic. Few own cars. There is good home cooked food cheap everywhere in the food centres. It’s has a great community spirit. But, I think absolutely crucially, it’s warm and sunny all year round as are the other Blue Zones. Getting outside, vitamin D, and simply getting hot are all wonderful for your health. The climate is much overlooked. Why aren’t the Nordic countries blue zones?

Hey, out in Lima Linda if it means you eat Veggie dogs, you get your protein. This means either you consume tofu and bean sprouts or you just get Veggie dogs but you don’t skip out on protein. Lima Linda is about a Vegetarian or Vegan Vegetarian diet, and plant based *is* a thing but it does not mean just veggies and no protein. A sweet potato is a source of protein but not for every day. I don’t live in Loma Linda, but I was raised around their mindset because I was raised Adventist. I still am, but I call myself a Not Your Mother’s Adventist 😅 yes I drink caffeine and rock out. I've also noticed this discrepancy in the longevity space, of - the Peter Attia pro-protein muscle camp, - and the Davivd Sinclair less protein and pro-fasting. Id say go with your personal feeling, and as a person who does a lot of exercise, i feel way better with lots more food and protein and so even though i practise fasting, i eat 3200-3600 calories a day with lotssss of protein as im never full. So yes i agree Keltie, we shouldn't obsess and stress about foods/ diets/restriction etc and take this new research with a pinch of salt. We should understand the science bros like Huberman (love him too!) are simply supplying us with information and advice but ultimately only we know our own bodies best and whats best for them. (eg some people work best on the carnivore diet and some on a vegan diet depending on their microbiomes which are individual to every person even identical twins), there is no ultimate answer or right or wrong...which is incidently why i love your vids and being our tester for the health and fitness world

@bellenesatan
@bellenesatan 9 ай бұрын
Phytoestrogens bind to your estrogen-b receptors, which control vasodilation and heart health (and appropriate skin health.) It does not cause sexual estrogenization because the phytoestrogens do not accurately match mammalian estrogens. If phytoestrogens had feminizing effects, menopausal and transwomen wouldn't spend hundreds yearly on hormone replacement therapies, and would just have some beans ;) even if you don't believe that the food industry has your best interest in mind; which is fair, I don't either, best believe that they value their wallets and the demand for estrogen therapies far exceeds the ability and resources to make them at an affordable pricing. If seeds and beans could fill that space commercially, then they would, because herbal medicine that works is just medicine.

Movement is the big one. Lifting heavy things, walking a lot, sometimes up steep hills for intensity. It’s the real fountain of youth. When it comes to food, not overeating and keeping lean lifelong is the biggest effect. Victor Longo is a longevity expert researching fasting and diet. He comes from one of the blue zones in Italy. I like his advice to eat a lot of whole plants with fish until you hit around 70 and then add in more animal protein to keep muscle mass from declining. So if you are young going more plant based is ok. As long as you lift! Get that muscle mass up and stop the decline with movement. Obviously eat real food, not nutrition poor junk foods.

Bryan Johnson is all about longevity and getting your youth back. He is on a plant-based diet is and very strict. He is scientifically measured constantly and puts the data on his Blueprint website for free. I'm sure you must have seen him. Big Hugs. Video was fun!

His protocols are seriously hard work. As someone with a fitness age 30 years lower than my chronological age you do not need to take that much fun out of your life

While his workouts and skincare routine are fantastic, the question around Bryan Johnson's diet is that he's on testosterone, which skews the results of eating purely vegan and being in a constant calorie deficit.

1. I don’t think you did it long enough to be able to notice a difference. 2. I don’t think you were prepared. 3. You can get all the protein you need from a plant based diet. 4. There is significant science showing that animal based proteins do things like damage kidney function whereas plant based proteins do not. This is not vegan propaganda, this is stuff you can find on the National Kidney Foundation website and I think you can even read some of the studies online. So, yeah, I think movement and connection are super important but I think food is too. Plant based diets have something like 19% reduced risk of cancer. That’s significant. Now, I’m not saying you need to be plant based, it’s your body and your life. But to write it off as not that important seems like it’s out of convenience or not wanting to put the effort in to change, seeing as you couldn’t even be plant based like two days in. To be clear, this is not shade. I just see you REALLY commit and enthused about other challenges and this one didn’t seem like you were into the mindset exactly to give it a real chance. I think it takes time to change and make something new work for you. I mean, you did gua sha for a month, which isn’t going to help you live longer but you committed and it *did* end up helping. Thank you for doing some interesting videos. ❤

I felt like the blue zones was anti Red meat/meat propaganda. Those blue zones esp Greece and Japan eat good portions of meat in their diet! When I was in Bali I also learned Balinese people have specific enzymes from their ancestral Microbiome that allows certain cultures to be able to process certain local foods while if American wants to eat a Balinese diet aka tons of rice they wouldn’t be able to process at the same way

That last bit is true - you don't just need the gut bugs, you need the receptors for the gut bugs. So just feeding everyone fibre and probiotics won't have the same effects on everyone
