Nice one dude, I did something similar but I sold 50% of my shame pile off. I also sold off any old armies that I just had in storage. Gave myself the task of finishing off my HH iron warriors. I almost completed the project only have a few bases and superheavy to go. Can’t explain how much motivation it gave me getting rid of all of the excess, it was almost a super painting Mojo boost not having that hanging over me as I was avoiding it.

Congratulations to your achievement. That is fantastic and really inspiring. I especially liked what you talked about FOMO and how it Tricks our mind. I’m thinking a lot about this in the last week. I managed to do a detailed list of what I painted and what I bought/printed/saled in the last two years. Result; even when I paint a lot (237 models 2021 compared to 102 2020) the amount of additional new models is roughly double that number. So I adapt your achievement with a little tweak; for 2023 I can only buy/print a new model, when I painted two. I hope with this 1:2 ratio I can reduce my PoS at least a little bit. I’ll add a little ruleset to that, to make it a bit more fun. Thank you again for that inspiration.

Wow, you managed to beat me by 4 whole models 2021; I ended up painting 1533 models last year 😅 Painted 593 models in the second half of 2020 (having been on a year long break before that), and have painted 892 models so far this year. I have bought nearly 1500 models since May, but I've promised my wife to take a bit of a break from buying more until sometime next year, the addiction bit is very much true 😅

I managed to complete my target of 365 minis, which I'm really happy with, but I'm so thankful I don't have to do it again this year! Only when I'm looking back with rose tinted specs will I consider pushing myself to do that again

I hear what your saying about fomo,I've only been back in the hobby for 18months or so and when I got back in after not even looking at models for a good 10 years there was so much exiting shiny stuff I had to have then as I wasn't sure how long it had been or would be available but I'm also only trying to buy things for existing factions I'll actually use now and have been a lot more productive for it.

Congrats on achieving your goal mate, 12K and 1500 odd models is insane. Please make sure you're looking after yourself though and you aren't suffering due to the amount of work you're putting on yourself!

It took me two years of concerted effort and a drastic reduction on buying minis to bottom out my pile at the end of 2020, totaling 1,516 painted minis. Since then I've got into 3D printing and have mostly stopped buying physical minis aside from the occasional sprue off eBay. During 2021 I only ended up painting 109, with currently 132 remaining in my new pile. Everyone 'hobby's differently but I'm finding a 'print-on-demand' approach to be a far healthier relationship personally. ...We'll just gloss over the growing backlog of unprinted files however, they don't count!

GW loves FOMO and it's disgusting. By the way, new Ork Boyz have 1 less mini and cost more and are mono pose models. What a bad joke by gw.

Absolutely mazing work and commendable dedication there mate! My 2021 was a bit of a write-off hobby-wise, it was all a bit of a blur with health issues and other stuff piling on and most of the back end of the year I just took time away to relax and get myself together. I also tried to get what I'd come to see as my excessive hobby addictions under control, I just quit keeping up with 40k and Age of Sigmar entirely (I was buying every army book release just to read lore and keep up with rules and had done for a couple years even when not playing the bloody games!). I quit buying all the Warhammer underworlds releases, that one started out from a good place, a little hobby taste of every faction to build and paint... yeah. My one exception was Necromunda (and just one or two figures I thought looked cool). I allowed myself to keep up with whatever I felt like with Necromunda, it's the one system and setting I've been most excited about building, kitbashing, painting and playing in. And you know what? I feel much happier with it all. Yeah I've still got a large backlog of projects I want to get around to. But the difference is I feel I CAN now, without being beholden to some odd need to "keep up", I can work on things at my own leisure for nothing but my own enjoyment... I bought a 3d printer so I'm on month 3 of my no GW ban.. I also moved on to One page rules and some other systems. It costs pennies on the dollar compared to GW models so I don't feel I need to be a grinch... I print what I want, I paint what I want and where as before I spent $100-$300 per month and now I spend like $100 or less, I think last month I spent $60 after the start up costs and that was just for some more resin, a new fep, a bit more alcohol and a few stls. No competition, 3d printing wins hands down and my 6K Mono X prints at comparable quality to Forgewold.. $75-150 and you print a whole 3000+++ army ha

Now, I really can’t conceive being able to afford a hobby costing 12k £, even converted to $, let alone the sheer amount of figures and the storage requirements, not to mention how you are still coherent after all the paint fumes you must’ve encountered over the year of painting. 😄 Good on you for holding yourself accountable and gaining an alternate perspective on how you take part in your hobby. I am glad for you that you were able to create a separate space for your collection. And Loki is a gorgeous good boi who deserves all the pets and belly rubs and chew toys. I love his curly poodly hair. Brings back some wonderful memories of my best friend’s childhood cockapoo, whose name was (I think), Nick. He was more a blackish Grey color and his coat was a little more scruffy/shaggy than the magnificent curls on Loki, but he was loved. His companions were all little Yorkies.

Well done, I limit myself by only collecting a single 40k Army, no AoS army, and buying a large percent 3D prints. It's up to 4,400 points and which each purchase I have less possible mini's to collect

I'm with you on this boat! Painted 105 minis and bought....I dunno. 50? so first off, 2:1 ratio. I intend to keep improving this ratio. eventually to reach a point the backlog is just like 10-30 minis. and keep the 2:1 maybe even 3:1 painted vs buy. for me its a great improvement. I was at a ratio of buy 150 paint 30....so from 5:1 to 1:2! 10fold improvement

I did not buy warhammer for 5 years :D however, the 3d printer goes brrrr regularily.

I'm not buying any more GW minis, unless its cheap 2nd hand or trade, maybe the book of iron for my orlock gang. Don't have much in the way of unpainted minis, 25 gouls, 5 marauder horsemen, 1 vampire lord and dragon, 1 5th ed sanguinary priest and a dwarf hero to finish. 3 or 4 other necromunda minis to. Not buying minis is easy once you get used to it. Right now I only buy a mini or two for like £5 and non-GW. And that's pretty rare too. This is mostly thanks to GW's increasingly predatory business practices, yes they have done it for a long time but last year was the last straw for me, I have all I want from them so no more spendy spendy. Love the nid army btw, how did you paint them?

Do you ever think of painting as a chore and not as a hobby when you do so much of it every day after work? Painting that many figures in a year is unreal btw mate. Some channels are acting like 200 in 1 year is a lot! 😂

i stopped buying minis myself from GW, in fact i would say, hat GW has done killed my hobby drive. But picking up cheap kits from catalyst gaming ( just battle tech) i've found a love for painting again.
