This is definitely true - I just bought a third 5 shelf bookcase for my collection - now I have room for what I had and room for more - I have been trying to set it up as 1 shelf per army / or one fighting another. It is just so easy to forget what you already have when it's in a closet.

I think this is actually a really unique approach to tackling a backlog. I'm tempted to do it, and the reasons are easy. If I do this, it gives me a physical manifestation of my backlog instead of just a lot of boxes that are easily shrugged off as "eh, I'll get to it." The model is now staring at me, judging my lack of progress. In addition, if I rank them up on the shelves, I can work in sections and SEE the progress being made in a gradient running across the space. Now, that's not to say this can't backfire. It could easily be a realization of how overwhelming the task at hand IS. However, that can be used to shrink the pile. It inventories all the items, and some things are held on to for no reason. I have a box of Start Collecting: Maggotkin that I bought and used only a few models from. If I leave them in the box, it will sit there in limbo forever. I don't play Age of Sigmar, I used the items for Kings of War. That army is done, complete, fully painted and shelved. Why would I touch these Maggotkin models any further? If I build them, they're now display pieces, items to practice new techniques. If I don't, they're an unknown amount of models in a sizeable box that may never see a paintbrush. Another option is I can just sell them on eBay, fully assembled, and get a small rebate on my hobby purchase when they go off to someone who will love these models.

I'm only 3 minutes into this video and am thinking, this guy is absolutely mad! Yet, I get it. I actually love assembling most models. I love to see them assembled and complete. My friend got me into the hobby back in 2007 with a box of Black Orks. I put them together at his house, on a weekend stay over. He didn't say a word until I was finished. He said, "You know you have to rank them up, right?" I'm like wtf does that mean. He explains and then laughs at me. Cured my need for assembling before painting to this day. I do damn near everything in sub-assemblies now.

I'm personally unable to keep things in boxes, so I assemble everything as soon as I receive them. Built a whole Orcs & Goblins army of nearly 300 models just last month, and currently building and painting a Sisters of Battle army. At least with the latter I've made a goal to only buy more kits once I've finished my old ones (which I ofc failed at due to getting both the Christmas Battleforces for them right away...), so I'm trying to be a "good boy" in that sense. That still leaves 4000 built but still unpainted models staring at me from my display cabinets... but at least I know what I have left to paint! Also, having an excel sheet to fill in what I have painted and how much is left to paint really helps.

This is the best ''pile of shame'' video i've ever seen. And that for the simple fact then instead of wierdly flexing bad buying habbits you actually build it all, it is no longer a shapless pile of boxes, those are project in the making! You can now uses all those models on more videos down the line and do the first clear all your shame video eva! Glorious!

This is why I'm just sticking to building one army at a time. I've listed everything I want to do with my unbuilt kits and I'm not starting them until the current project is done. I know you mentioned whether they take up more space when built, and I'd say yes. And now you'll need storage for them all - where will they all go?! I've got those KR Multicase card boxes, so I can see all my boxes of unbuilt kits being replaced with those lol. Looking forward to seeing you paint them all! 🤘🚀🤘

Circa 2000 I had most likely twice that amount of models(mostly unpainted, with some that was at least primed), however Circa 2001/2002 I stepped way from Miniature wargaming all together and either gave away or sold just about every miniature I owned. Now here it is 2022, and with the leaps of technology of 3D printing and more casual rules such as One Page rules, I am slowly dipping my toe back into it..this time however I have vowed to only print or buy units that I will paint before moving forward.

Honestly, to begin with, I thought this was funny. But then as the pile of boxes began to grow on the table, I started to feel a bit sick. Not really because of the challenge that such a mountain represented, but because of the excess. I cannot comprehend spending all that money on plastic game-pieces. Maybe it’s all covered within disposable income for you, but really, is that a healthy thing to do with your resources? I feel you may have a problem. That was a hoarder level POS. I didn’t even get the impression that having all that stuff gave you much pleasure. Just seemed to be a source of anxiety. I know you wouldn’t have been able to get a video out of it, but I can’t help think that just selling 90% of it might not have been a healthier thing for you to do. Peace.
