'I don't support Lukashenko,' Belarusian Sabalenka says after reaching French Open semis

The Belarusian tennis player Aryna Sabalenka has said that she does not support Alexander Lukashenko, following her French Open quarter-final win against Ukraine’s Elina Svitolina.

"I don’t support war, meaning I don’t support Lukashenko right now," Sabalenka said when asked if she supported the Belarus dictator. Sabalenka has previously skipped press conferences after being questioned by a Ukrainian journalist on her stance on the war in Ukraine and her links with Lukashenko. The second seed, defeated Svitolina 6-4, 6-4 to reach the semi-finals at Roland Garros for the first time.

i watched the full press conference today and this needs to stop .. they were so agressive to aryna it felt like a interrogation by the police ! so disrepectful and wrong .. she has done nothing wrong and clarified everything that is needed .. all question were politics related .. pls leave her alone this is more than asking questions this is bullying ! this is not fair and needs to stop ..

"If I wanted to be political I wouldn't be here as a tennis player". That's exactly right, because the question is in what degree are these even compatible since she would be potentially endangering (the safety of) her own life as well as her family were she to become an activist. The Ukrainians tennis players who won't shake hands with her and criticize her need to see her as an individual rather than as part of some group, and they also need to respect her choice not to become another Navalny (and just see where he ended up). Regarding every individual who -willingly or unwillingly- belongs to a group to be the same is exactly what started this mess, and more of it won't improve anything.

Sport and politics should not mix, I wholeheartedly agree. Sport should be a safe space for us to lose ourselves. Like going to the theatre or the movies it should remove us from the stress of our lives and entertain and excite us. When the match ends everyone should shake hands and go home.

I'm disgusted by the Polish and Belgian "journalists" who asked her point blank about Lukashenko. Aryna did not have to answer that. She is taking an enormous risk with this answer. She and her family could both suffer repercussions inside Belarus. Enough with these political questions!! This is a tennis tournament. Any so-called journalist who asks any player about the war should be immediately tossed out!

aryna and her family have been living in the USA for a long time. She bragged about it a few years ago. She also entered the list of support for Lukashenko in the presidential election. She introduced sports into politics. And this interruption is what real journalists want. Because there is a murderous war going on in Ukraine, not a computer game. Is it so difficult to understand and show the heart of the attacked population!!!!

Ukraine could've easily ended this war by negotiating peace, but they choose not to, why? Because the corrupt crook Zelensky and his cronies are personally milking billions off US taxpayers by pretending to fight this unwinnable war. Zelensky's whole family is safely ensconced in Florida as well, living in million dollar mansions. If Ukrainians don't want war, they need to oust Zelensky from power and elect someone who is willing to negotiate peace. That shouldn't be too hard right, to run an election? After all, we're told Ukraine is a highly functioning beacon of democracy?

elle s'est impliquée dans la politique lorsqu'elle a soutenu la liste du dictateur de Loukachenko aux élections et il a truqué ces élections, maintenant le vrai gouvernement siège à l'étranger. Qu'elle se coupe de Loukachenko, de son gros sous, et alors elle sera libre. Et les journalistes devraient demander, c'est leur rôle. Et elle n'a pas à répondre, et nous la jugerons pour cela. I think the way to respond to this question at a press conference after a tennis match is, ‘ I don’t feel the need to respond to this question’. I play tennis not politics. This question should not be asked at press conferences, especially after a tennis match. It zaps energy from athletes, which they need very much during a tournament.

Not supporting the war but not exactly condemning the continuous onslaught of murdering Ukrainian children. At least say something about this tragedy ffs! Make a gesture by sending money to Ukrainian victims or something.

@@poohoff The Iraq war was just as illegal and unprovoked as this tragedy. I’m from 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 and I was so angry and disgusted by it! The thing I’d say about your reply is the focus is on this tennis player because of her profile as world number 2 and how many athletes can you name from Belarus? Then how many can you name from 🇺🇸? We just need someone to speak out against the deliberate genocide. And as a lot of Russian and a few Belarusian tennis players have a platform outside of their respective gestapo terrorist states many want to hear the natives speak up. As we don’t hear a single peep from Russians or Belarusians as they are silenced out of fear of a long prison sentence. But I guess she might get back to supporting later ? )) You can see she doesn't have a strong position in the matter, but whovknows why. I'm guessing she might be scared. The worst case scenario she does support him, but must say she doesn't in order to maintain status quo.
