I raised 6 kids. 5 boys. My boys open doors for me to this day and my daughter is kind and compassionate. They were a handful. None of them had phones until they proved mature enough to have them. They also had supervised computer time and only 2 hours of tv daily. One hour of that had to be educational. If my kids ever called me by my first name? Privileges were taken. I believed in creative punishment that fit the situation. For example, not showing respect earned them a weekend day of trying to run our household. They could ask for help a certain amount of times depending on age. The younger ones got more as the older ones maxed at 3. Trying to take care of a whole family and see what it’s like brought them a lot of perspective on how respect is earned. They learned really quickly how hard it is to be responsible (with a safety net of course) and earn their own money. They got to earn movie nights, dinners out, and fun family activities for good behavior. They learned to be friends with their siblings as well. We also had one on one times with each child as they were growing up so they could talk about anything that bothered them or that they were proud of. I’m so proud of them.
@Amish079 күн бұрын
wow am moved by your message ty for sharing❤

This was exactly how I was raised. If I wanted something I had to work for it. If I was disrespectful I would either stand in the corner, or I wasn’t allowed to play and had to do chores. When it was nice out we had to be outside. We were only allowed a certain amount of time to watch tv. Homework had to be done before we could do anything.

Iv grown up in Sweden during the 90s, and we use nicknames for friends, and pet names for close family members. Your real name is only for formal or serious situations. If a persons attention is elsewhere and don't respond when you call them, then you call them by their real name, which immediately grabs their attention. You know shit is gonna go down when your parent calls you by your real name. And if id ever use my dads real name in a fight when i was a kid, he'd disowned me.

Sir......this statement couldn't be more true. I have a 4 year old that REGULARLY hits me with these calm, logical rebuttals. The real test is being able to say "oooof....you're right." And not gag on your own words. Thankfully, the feeling of defeat only happens rarely, because the whole job of being a parent is to raise smart, articulate, level headed people, so these instances usually bring pride and joy to me. I have 3 teenagers and a 4 year old. My life's work is challenging.

Ok so her mistake was trying to pull that whole "I'm an adult so I know better" line. Come here, kids these days don't buy into that shit anymore, they have access to the internet they know that most grownups are just hanging by a thread. She should have gone with "no phones during dinner because we need to take this time for you to practice your interpersonal skills or else you will end up an emotionally stunted adult with difficulty communicating your emotional needs just like me. And you wouldn't want that now would you?"

It left everyone with an issue of some sort. Most people i know of any age that struggle to take constructive criticism is because their parents used the "because im an adult" excuse and then punished them for asking again.
