Ever wondered what an F1 street circuit looks like when F1 isn’t in town? Well recently I drove the Melbourne GP circuit and I was surprised at how much work goes into getting the track ready for a race weekend. The Albert Park street circuit is definitely a great track, although I was surprised that I made my way through a car park on my flying lap. Join me in this travel vlog as I make my way from Perth to Melbourne showing you a little of what domestic air travel looks like in Australia.

Oh wow. It’s remarkable on how a street circuit looks when there’s no race

in case anyone's wondering, Albert Park is, well, a park when there's no F1 going on. the circuit is made of a few roads that connects various sporting compounds, bbq facilities and their respective car parks. when you cordon these roads' connection to the outside of the park, they form a ring around Albert Park Lake and becomes the F1 circuit. i've had bbq there a few times. very nice view of the city. and during race weekends, you can hear the cars if you are within 3km radius of the park. if you can, you NEED to come to melbourne next year for the F1 glory.

Just had a realization, since you are away for F1 from March-November/December, you basically only encounter warm weather seasons and skip winter wherever you go.

Great video of the differences between when the event is on and what it looks like when it's opened to the public. It's so much chalk and cheese between the two and showing someone the difference can be unbelievable. I've worked as a volunteer race official for both the Adelaide events and Melbourne. Adelaide had the greatest atmosphere of the two. You could be 50 kms away from the track and there would be indications the Grand Prix was on and the excitement was obvious from everyone there. In Melbourne it's the opposite. You can go into South Melbourne, which is only hundreds of metres away from Turn 4 and you wouldn't know it was happening! I can remember one year I was shopping at a supermarket. I had forgotten I still had my pass on and the checkout chick asked what it was. After I explained to her what it was she said she wasn't aware the Grand Prix was on. We were 9 kms north of Melbourne CBD! But when it comes to facilities and effort put into the Melbourne event Adelaide had nothing on it. Adelaide was very obviously a temporary race track! The pit building and race offices were built and removed for the event and it's not that they were temporary but they also LOOKED temporary. Generally cables weren't covered unless there were foot traffic going over them. There were no plants of any kind. It was very baron and that was just the F1 pit and paddock. In Melbournes case almost everything is made to look like it had always been there. As in the photos in this video, you can see in the paddock area, even the existing trees had pots of flowers put around their bases. In front of the offices, where the Australian Grand Prix Corporation are based during the event, there is a wooden deck made specifically for the 4 days and then torn down. At that deck there is a coffee vendor, seats tables and even a couple of couches. Melbourne's effort for presentation is the biggest I have ever seen for a race event. But if you asked me which event I would want to go to and that be the only one ever again it would be hard to choose. Because there has been great racing at both.

Interesting video Kym. That Qaintarse screws people at every turn doesn’t surprise me. I worked at Perth Airport for a few years and have lost count of the amount of times people were complaining that Qantas just don’t care about their passengers or their baggage. If they weren’t the national carrier they would probably have folded during Covid. Interesting comparison with Virgin Business Class. My wife & I flew back from Sydney a couple of years ago on an A330 and it was the same or better than the Qantas one you featured. We bid online (I think it was about $150 each on top of the fare we paid, which was a bargain Premium Economy fare) and got the seats. Excellent for a 4 1/2 hour flight.

My dear friend was a FIFO and that poor fellow used to have to fly BNE-PER on a Virgin Aircraft in Economy once a fortnight. Then connect to a charter to deep WA from Perth. Nightmare stuff! Very lucky to get that aircraft PER-MEL Kym. In Australia and in and out of Australia we are experiencing record yields and record loads for Airlines. So prices are high, problems are many and service is low.

Thanks for the impressions from Albert Park when there is no F1 going around. Regarding the flight prices in Australia - it's the same in Germany with no competition either. Since airberlin gone bankrupt a few years ago Lufthansa Group is now the only domestic airline with horrendous prices.

Kym, nice video. Yes QF biz class, they have lost all sense of service quality, much like US Carriers. Tix prices, you are right! The flight ticket prices inbound and around Oz have gone through the roof. I’m flying back to Oz from Europe now, first time since CV, mainline airlines Eco tickets are what Biz used to be. Biz are now what first used to be, and bizarrely first have only marginally increased, and are relatively not bad in comparison with J and Y class

Daaaaaayum! I thought flying out of Hawaii was expensive and you’re just flying what I consider an easy short flight. I looked up the cost of a flight to Australia once when considering races that are relatively close and I don’t remember what it was, whether it was how long the flight was or the cost or both but I gave up that idea real quick.

Oz has always been a rip-off for air fare. In 2009 I flew from Belfast to Melbourne for £777 (that included a return). I let the return lapse. Leaving Oz, it cost me $1350 one-way to Paris. Ouch! I'm back in the UK & flights here are relatively so cheap. I miss the Australian sunshine, though.

Think he was more referring to the seat.. Effectively the same seat on Qantas's 787s and 380s (with some minor differences). Agree with Kym on airfare pricing but this seems to be happening globally - the airlines are making a motza (but they all lost a lot over Covid) and ultimately you need profit to pay for new planes and reward shareholders
