I always seem to see white losing these. I think the issue is our intuition of capturing towards the center is a mistake in this variant, since Black's goal is to get behind the pawns and white cannot support the a/h as files easily as the other files, as they are stuck on the edge of the board. I think capturing towards the flanks is the way to go.

I only played 8 horde games and never won with white, and I got the general idea with black, trading minor pieces for two pawns, punishing undefended pawns and creating a breakthrough the backrank by sacrificing if necessary. I think this variant is incredibly unbalanced but I guess it can be actually a good ways of training pawn structure and possibly pawns vs pieces endgames. Also HordingHoldor is actually a top 10 horde player so yeah he is kinda strong.

Love your vids Eric - QUESTION? Moving into the end game, if you have a choice to swap off Bishops (all 4 still on the board), is it better to end up with 'like' or 'opposite' colored bishops?
@LunizIsGlacey
@LunizIsGlacey Жыл бұрын
In my opinion (but take it with a grain of salt) if you are better off than your opponent in some way, e.g. a material advantage, a stronger position, a pass pawn etc., then probably "like" is better. It allows you to nullify your opponent's bishop by either preventing it moving where it wants to go, or defending squares it wants to attack, and leaves less chances for your opponent to get the upper hand. Of course, the reverse is also true - if your opponent currently has what seems to be a possible advantage in a similar way, then trading for "opposite" bishops could allow you more chances to come back. It allows you to control key squares your opponent may need to convert their advantage, and allow you to do so freely without much resistance: such as restricting their other pieces, being able to freely attack pawn chains rooted in your bishops colour, prevent the king from moving in to active squares, and to prevent promotion on squares of your bishop's colour. All of those could be met with counterplay from the opponent's bishop if it were of like square. Of course though, it depends on the exact position, but these are useful things to think about when considering a trade. There are of course also other people who could offer their own perspective too, and theirs may be very different!

@@dominiks5068 Usually around 2000, slightly over, slightly under. Not that high rating (I zerk a lot, and I shouldn't), but I regularly beat the first guy to whom Eric lost and the 1600 guy to whom Eric almost lost. But Eric just started playing horde, he will be really great really soon if he keeps playing it, I'm sure of that! The last guy, Hording Holdor, is pretty unbeatable, though, he would be a fitting final boss for Eric in due time! :)
