In this video, I try to play a Horde Chess game while blindfolded. Horde is a variant on lichess.org where white start with 36 pawns, and black starts with the usual setup. Needless to say blind Horde Chess was a big challenge.

Remembering the location of 32 pawns while blindfolded is the kind of thing evil wizards used to force people to do as a twisted punishment in the olden times.

It's interesting how a chess player's memory is so highly specialized that doubling the amount of pieces while reducing their differences makes it close to impossible to keep track.

I guess the other thing is he's used to standard chess positions. He described it as knowing furniture around your house. Whereas he may struggle alot if he played blindfold 960
@RainingArtillery
@RainingArtillery 2 жыл бұрын
Correct! Memory of chess positions is closely tied to understanding of the positons. Pieces are remembered not like a random configuration of squares, but based on purpose, what they are attacking, weaknesses, etc. It's why most chess masters can play blindfolded without ever having learned to play blindfolded.
