Asus ROG Ally BROKEN Micro SD Card Reader RMA Process and Experience
Hey guys, in this video we take a look at the RMA process for the Asus ROG Ally when it comes to the broken Micro SD card issue and I share my experience with the whole process and how the device is working afterwards.

Glad it all worked out for u my man. I'm in the process of sending mine out to Asus right now! My sd card reader stopped working as well. I heard they have new motherboards where the sdcard issue wont happened again. Not sure if thats true though. All thry needed to do was just put a heat resistant sheet over the sd reader

Yeah had my Ally from launch date, had it on for hours, high temps, and my SD card still good. I want to get a external drive and back everything hearing these stories

Nice video...very well narrated and explained. Ps : I am thinking of using just the storage the Rog Ally come with. Play and finish games and uninstall and install next ones. A compromise.

Good to know that asus will at least fix this with minimal bs. I just swapped the nvme to a 1TB so I dont have to worry about space, I just use the micro sd to transfer data in and out of my ally and not leave it in the unit. Thankfully since getting this unit on release week (4 months of usage) it still works ok. I hope the replacement for you would have fixed that issue otherwise

If anyone’s wondering, I got my ally back from RMA a week ago and my SD card slot has been working flawlessly. Transferred a bunch of games and I can play them off the sd card and it works really good

Just contacted asus after 2 emails they said they would fix it the issue im getting when ever i use the system in turbo is causes the system to crash from the sd card and when i reboot ismt cant find the card until i let it rest for about 30 minutes and then i have to fix my card

This is why I own the OG LCD and OLED LE Steam deck, and have had no issues. lol

Same story here except my repair took almost 30 days. Everything is working fine and Asus also extended my warranty 3 days.

Hey so it’s been 12 days since u uploaded this video. I’m set to receive my ally back from RMA either this week or early next week. Can you confirm if the SD card slot still work. I sent mines in because my joystick stopped working but I also told them my sd card don’t work either.

If I send my ally in for RMA with the complete retail packaging with all accessories, you think they'll send everything back with the fixed device? I feel very uneasy about just sending the unit with a ton of bubble-wrap. I think the original packaging offers the best protection.

I remember they said not to send it in the original packaging because when they send it back they’re going to use a different package. So I would just advise using lots of bubble rap and a spare box, but of course you can use the original package but you won’t get it back. Hope this helps!

you dont have an external card reader? u should use that to see if the sd cards are fine or not

My SD card is quite worn out because during playing games stored on it, they freeze or completely hang. The slot works, but the cards inside literally overheat, although it hasn't exceeded a temperature of 70 degrees

you need a revision 8 or 9 with an 8 or 9 at the start of the serial number.

I just took mine back to currys PC world (UK) as they offer a 30 day refund or replacement. so when my SD card reader and card fried I took it back and got a revision 8 which has been fine even running AAA games off the SD card. Apprently they fixed something with revision 8 & 9 i heard. August and september 2023 manufactured dates models.

Can you open it up and see if the microSD card has alterations to the new board or what changes they made to the new boards to fix the issue?

I could do but i am not. They changed something with revision 8 and 9 models with 8 or 9 at start of the serial number. My 2nd ones been fine.

Do not play in turbo mode period it will die again make a 30 watt profile that doesn’t go above that and max the fan curve there is no performance gain above 30 watts anyways

Hi guys, i’ve bought a used z1 extreme, it has SN R5, sd card still works, do i have the right to have it replaced or do i have to fry it before to send it to rma?

If you brought it from somewhere like Cex, GAME, Amazon etc you will probably have to go through them. However if it was cash in hand, ebay and no receipt provided then it won't be entitled to a warranty repair most likely. You could try to contact Asus and explain and see if the serial number is still covered

The micro SD card reader is still working, I can definitely open it and show what’s inside. But in terms of a full teardown I’m not sure if I trust myself fully lol 😂.

Not sure if it helps anyone else, but mind just stopped working, I went into device management, found the PCIe card reader, right clicked, and hit detect hardware changes, and the SD card poped right up again! Obviously not a fix if you have a hardware issue!

Bad reviews. Saw one yesterday on my google feed. unwieldy and tries to do everything better than the rest but fails in all efforts lol. FPS mode it's better to pair a bluetooth mouse and keyboard and the screen is too big for the chip and looks awful at 720p low. Just what i read.

the vrm is too close to the SD slot. while it works now its a case of "how long is a piece of string" most people that get it back from RMA find it dies again shortly after. this makes me wonder why does Asus even bother doing the RMA when they know its just gonna fail again., the mobo would need to be redesigned to fix it

Actually, recent reports on Discord are that RMAs are now working fine and not failing. We still need a few more weeks to know if that will hold up, but it's promising. Also, one of the more popular theories is that it's not "heat" per se that is the problem, but rather a possible manufacturing defect that is causing the failures. More specifically, people are speculating that the solder joints on the SD controller chip are failing due to thermal stress because they are not soldered properly. One person on Discord did reflow the solder with success. No official word from ASUS, but that is what some people are reporting.

Very, very true! They need to redesign the motherboard or simple put a piece of fiber glass sheet on the sdcard reader. That should stop the heat from damaging the reader and / or the memory card.

Never had a issue, I put triple A games on my sd card, play for hours while plugged no problems. Using a Samsung 512 pro sd card.

I'm able to get A1 class microSD cards to work reliably but not my A2 V30 cards. The A2 cards will work for a while but then fail after heavier use. Reformatting and/or repartitioning seems to work temporarily but I've permanently damaged 2 microSD cards already! It seems to be hit or miss for others. I suspect it's because the heat is causing intermittent violation of the tighter timing requirements for the A2 read and write cycles of the SD card reader silicon, resulting in data corruption. I was hesitant at first to buy the Ally with this issue but no regrets. It's a great handheld. With this workaround I'm now able to use any microSD card. I don’t remember the exact size, but any box that the Ally fits in and allows some room to put some bubble rap for protection should work.

My SLIGHTLY USED ROG ally ($700 piece of TRASH) is currently being repaired for sd card failure. Any update if your SD card still works flawless and did you upgrade your warranty?

Yup, the micro SD card slot is still working just fine, thankfully. As for the warranty I didn't upgrade it or anything like that. Hope this helps!

How much battery life do you get from the Rog Ally?

It really depends on the operating mode, I mostly play AAA games with turbo mode and I get about maybe an hour or a little less, which is really bad. I’m hoping battery tech gets better with PC handhelds. If we can get to Nintendo Switch V2 or OLED battery life that would be great!

I get 3 hours playing starfield at 1080 p ultra using my steamdecks add on battery pack on my ROG. But bought it for my steamdeck. Just buy an add on battery pack and you can get loads of time. But I don't use it much as always by a plug.

Jusg avoid using SD cards and buy a Right angle storage adapter and install a 2tb 2280 NVME drive. The adapter and ssd can be had for less than $100. ETA Prime has a tutorial on his channel.

Upgrading the SSD is definitely what I’ll be doing but I was just curious to see how the RMA process is like and whether the Micro SD will actually last afterwards. I appreciate the advice!

That’s your issue right there who the heck even downloads AAA games on a microSD card, AAA games should only be installed on SSD micro SD cards are very slow, and should only be used for emulation in my opinion, but to each his own
