The stupid thing is we have decent left backs but because they don't play in the PL or at fashionable clubs he overlooks them. James Justin was literally named in the England squad before he got injured and now just because he's not in the PL he's overlooked.

REMEMBER: Southgate REFUSED to play Foden in the CAM role "because he doesn't play there for his club". He LAUGHED at the suggestion and reiterated his point that Foden plays wide for his club and NOT in the CAM role so that's why he refuses to try Foden in that role... Yet, he starts Tomori OUT OF POSITION at LB when he has NEVER PLAYED THERE FOR HIS CLUB OR COUNTRY, then HOOKS HIM AT HALF TIME!! HOW ABOUT HE DROPS MAGUIRE AND PLAYS TOMORI IN HIS NATURAL CB POSITION INSTEAD!! As for HENDERSON?? Southgate won't even LOOK at players in the Championship, because they aren't playing at the TOP LEVEL each week.... Henderson is playing in a league that is BELOW LEAGUE 2 STANDARD and Southgate REFUSES to drop him!! Is Southgate the biggest HYPOCRITE or what??? GET HIM OUT

@MarkWalmsley Great point, add it to the very long list of hypocritical statements that Southgate continues to produce.. He's an absolute fluffy muppet and is WELL OVERCOOKED. If he had any sense of duty to this country he would have dropped his favourite old boys who are on their way out, and played some fresh blood who are the FUTURE of this country's football. His loyalty lies with his brown nosers, ie: Maguire, Henderson, Pickford, Phillips etc. NOT with the country that he is paid to represent at the highest level and put above all else!

I read German, Spanish and Portuguese and whole world says England have a fantastic team and also say Southgate is a terrible coach holding England back and this is foreign media and fans saying this who don’t care whether England wins or not. The are two sets of England fans, unambitious fans who lack a deep knowledge of football who think England’s good results are down to Southgate and support him. and other fans who are more ambitious, who know more about tactics and football and see how these players play when they are coached by world class coaches at their clubs and see the players carry Southgate and win the games against teams they should win on individual ability and having a strong bench, but lose big games against top teams due to Southgate not being tactically good enough during games and being too cautious. England don’t need to a world class manager to win, they have such good players, a good tactical coach would win something for England, Southgate is neither. We will waste another summer in this cautious, bad tactically coach.

@@Delboy0 all the French media and international media was saying Deschamps was too boring and was wasting the talent of french players but he has won everything now, only in the last two years has all of the criticism of him stopped. What fans and media want is entertainment which is not necessarily the same as winning international tournaments.. unfortunately swashbuckling attacking football is for the birds most of the time. Controlled build up and men to protect from counters is how the big baubles usually get one and fans will moan right until the trophies come through the door. (See peps 4 centre back line up this season for example)

Dion Dublin arrogantly stated at the start of the game that we'd score at least 6 or 7 goals. I'm curious as to why he and many other 'experts' always predict we'll steamroll teams like Malta who actually played really well, particularly in the first half. As for Southgate, I'm sick of him overlooking in-form players like JWP and picking below standard players like Maguire and Philips.

And saka is better than wsyne Rooney or Michael Owen. Scholes, lampard, Gerrard, Ashley Cole. Your subjective opinion is they are better, maybe, but objectively Southgate the second best ever.

well objectively Kane is better than Rooney/Owen/Shearer as English premier league goal scorer and internationally, John Terry are you having a laugh. Kyle Walker / Stones objectively already more successful defenders at club level and internationally. Rice the first decent holding player have had in decades...again stats for interceptions etc...far exceed any of his predecessors. Scholes, Gerrard yeah that's a fair argument. Not to mention the penalty choices, especially having a 19 year old who'd never taken a professional penalty before going 5th in a FINAL (idc how many he'd scored in training it's nothing compared to the real thing) ahead of more experienced players like Sterling and Shaw, crazy decision that could've killed Saka's career before it started, that in itself a sackable offence

The problem with Southgate is he doesn't have a Premier league pedegree like Alex Furgeson, Wenger, Klopp, Guadiola, Morinhio, Ancelotti, Conti et al. The importance of this point is that Southgate always has one eye on the morning paper headlines as he has his other eye on his next job - probably in the Prem' league. The other top managers have been there, done that and so don't give a flying fish about their reputation - they've already proved themselves in that league; Southgate hasn't hense his cautious approach to games.

How does England not have a natural left back to select? I know there are a couple of injuries, but damn, select somebody who plays regular in the Prem and is in form, even if you are giving him his first cap. You have to blood these players at some point and damn it, Malta is the time to do it.

This is England's issue. If this was Spain, France, Belgium, Portugal, even Scotland recently, is no matter who they are playing it's high tempo, 100 miles an hour. They understand the value of keeping the levels up top and respecting everyone. England clearly lacked respect and don't get that every game counts in building momentum. Go out and treat Malta with respect and thrash them. English arrogance. They lack winning mentality

That aside Southgate wont get a job with any English team when he fails next summer. What the FA do have is plenty of money to hire a foreign coach but they're idiots. Thats the problem.

When you have pundits like Catterall you can see why Southgate is still the England, say at tournaments, he made mistakes, did not learn from those mistake at the next tournament, but I will only judge him from the next tournament, in any other type of work a manager showing no signs of learning from big mistakes gets sacked

I have no idea why Southgate as well as other England managers refuse to select players who are natural to their positions and their side of the pitch?? You can't tell me that Shaw & Chilwell are the only left backs who England can pick from!! We have U21's and U20's that have left backs playing...we also have a couple of other teams in the Prem with English left backs not to mention Championship players....You don't have to pick only players in the top flight...England have picked championship players before...look when he started picking Phillips!!! Harps back to Southgate wanting to get his boys in the squad...even in a nothing couple of games that we could win with the U21s! Give other players a chance and not just players like Kane who want to pep their stats up!

it would've served us right if a regular starter was injured going full strength (or as close as GS gets) Vs malta, who lets be honest outplayed england last night. players out of position, the crazy thing is southgate previously refused to play foden as a 10 'because he doesn't play there for city' - with one more window before the euros there should've been 5-6 changes to try blooding fresh players; as a newcastle fan, i think longstaff is ideal to succeed henderson; why use rashford when gordon was the euro u21 star last summer? Why use kane & not watkins?

That's the point, its all despite Southgate! We win because of the immense talent we have. Just imagine what Pep could do with the team. The England international team should have the best English manager money can buy. No foreigners! You will never get the same passion out of a foreigner, is shouldn't even be allowed. The idea here is England changed manager and suddenly England's footballers got miraculously much better, all the other teams in the world got worse and England should have won a tournament for the first time in 50 years. Is that likely or was it just the manager improved the team.

I think Jose Mourinho should be the next England manager, at least he's had experience with winning trophies. Unlike Southgate who got relegated with Middlesbrough and he gets to be England manager. Similar thing happened with Roy Hodgson, he got West Brom promoted and he got the England job. My point is that our last two managers managed medioca clubs (no disrespect) but we should hiring Super class managers who have been successful with more elite clubs.

He picks them because he’s stubborn. He wants to show critics he can do as he likes. All countries covet many of the English players. None would want Gareth. What Prem sides would want him if he became available? But Gareth has been blessed with a wonderful crop of talent to select. England 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 should win this competition in spite of Gareth. Even if he does keep selecting ‘Hendo.’ Other powerhouse countries are going through a barren spell. Gareth is one really, really lucky bloke

It would be nice to look forward to a tournament for once, but as was the case with the world cup, I'm just counting down to what will hopefully be the end of Southgate's reign. We will lose as soon as we play a decent team in the knockout stages. I guarantee it 1 million percent.

I’m not protecting Southgate in any way - but Kane was fouled when be bizarrely was shown a yellow there was contact from the keeper and Rice’s goal should have defiantly stood. Also when Rashford was sandwiched between two players could also have been given as a pen. So in fairness although the performance was very poor we should have had at least 4/5 goals.

All this talk about where he got us is ridiculous! He has one of the best international sides in football today and in recent years, we do well against poor or out if form teams and good teams we hold them off to a draw then lose on penalties. I don't see why s till have him as a mamager, anyone with a break can see his limits and England has felt his limits too many times. We see he isn't able to adapt, he isn't trying anything new other than playing players out of position which hasn't worked. We will lose in another tournament and waste more time. This team is out best chance to win something and we will likely fumble it.

I suppose you could argue that the players are playing outside of their club partnerships and outside of their training environment so why not out of position also. Best position for some of these players would be Left Outside.

Henderson needs calling out, he is 33 years old playing in a retirement league he should of retired himself from international football instead of taking up a place of someone playing proper professional football. Hendo was all down with his rainbow laces until the money was waved in his face and now he is stopping the next generation coming through from getting their turn with England at a tournament, Hendo is a right piece of work...

At one point we had 3 right backs on the pitch. One at right back, one at left back and one in centre midfield. In the first half we had 2 right backs, none of which were playing at right back. We had a centre back at right back. The guy is an absolute clown. Trent can't play in centre midfield. He can't play with his back to goal and is disposed easily when pressed.

This is tournament football and results are all that matters.. keeping lads in who are out of form or deemed as past it is only going to get those players back up to confidence and consistency.. Southgate has won every game.. plus some of these players need to stay away from injuries and return to their clubs.. all the noise is meaningless.. during tournaments players get injuries and it means others have to do a job to cover.. Southgate is driving everyone crazy but he keeps delivering results..
