500 tons of ballast for the railroad are to be delivered today but they've got 100 tons dumped already before I got there. Some pretty cool views from different angles on the wheel loader as I'm stock piling the ballast.

Hay Dave is there any way to mark the area for dumping the ballast? so you do not have to correct the location of the pile , so that the access ramp remains clear? you must have a good time using the big equipment! it makes the tasks so much easier! have a great one Dave!

BB is welcome to come and play in my stone Richard. For the past several years the trucks have dropped their tonnages down from 23 to 21 or 22, for some reason the quarry made that rule. Hi Dave, I am confused. Why do you continuously need new ballast? Where does the existing ballast go and why can't it be brought back up in place and used to be tamped back into the tracks?.
@ccrx6700
@ccrx6700 6 күн бұрын
Good question Terry. When we're cribbing out the ties then all the ballast has to get replaced including both shoulders. Also typically when I tamp I lift the track up and we sometimes dump new ballast down, sometimes we pull the shoulders in if there is enough rock on the sides to do that. But even doing that eventually we have to add more ballast, plus I like to keep a lot of ballast on the shoulders, helps prevent heat buckles and track from sliding out in the curves. Some railroads don't use as much ballast per mile as we do, varying road masters have varying opinions on how much ballast they want in their tracks. Thank you for watching and may you have a very good day my friend.

We generally get 400 tons at a time Donald, that is one good days work if the quarry has the trucks that day to bring all that much in one day, they usually do. Sometimes if we are doing a lot of cribbing or tamping, then I will ask for more. I am the one who requests ballast and how much. They have never denied or questioned me when I ask, which is awesome. Then they bought this one off a rental company and gave it to us to keep at the ballast pile. I need a CAT 980! Dave, how would you like a cab ride on the real KLS&C 85? This was our scenic train run from Paw Paw to Lawrence, MI. I made this run many, many times. I just found this video taken in the early spring of 1989. It wasn't long after this video, I started to get training to engineer 85. That began my love affair with this engine until the end in December 1994. I hope you enjoy this video. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/hMhxmb1e1MqwaH0.html If you go to part 2, the caboose ride back, I have a brief distant cameo appearance beside the conductor at our "Depot" in Paw Paw at the end of the video. Dave, I hope you enjoy both. Try not to be too critical of our track work! We sure could have used you! That was my railroading! Still extremely enjoyable for a model railroader now getting to operate real equipment!

Nice! What is ballast classified as from the quarry in terms of Under x Over y or whatever?
@ccrx6700
@ccrx6700 8 күн бұрын
There are different quarries across the country that have different terms for the same size stone 4 SL. Some have modified, some over, under, etc. For instance one quarry calls a certain size stone used for driveways as 2B and the same stone at a neighboring quarry they call it 57's. The quarry we get this ballast from classifies it simply as #3 stone. That is not the same as an R3, the R designation is for rip rap. Thank you very much for checking out the video and may you have a very good day my friend.

What kind of rock is ballast made of? And what size is it? (my driveway for example uses 6/7 crushed limestone.)

That is limestone, deep mined rock Scott and it is classified as #3, about the size of tennis balls. It would make a great base for your driveway, but then you'd need to put that crushed limestone you have on top of it. Thank you for watching and may you have a very good day my friend.
