Elyse, my dear, think about what you would do if the dentist ruined your son's mouth. Would you ever take him back there again? No. Would you search for a new dentist and tell him about the problem almost immediately? Yes. Be your own protective mama ❤ because you deserve it, yes, but also because when you get in the habit of accepting goodness for yourself, your son will eventually learn that habit too

I once told a dental office receptionist that I didn't like a previous dentist I had had and was embarrassed because I didn't know what to tell them. She told me, you don't have to tell them anything. You don't have to like all the dentists/doctors out there, and people switch dentists and doctors all the time. They may not even notice (obviously that's dependant on how big the city is or dental practice). I had such bad anxiety going to dentists that when she told me this I finally realized I could control my health/dental choices. Growing up I just had to go to whatever dentist or doctor my parents said that I had to go to, and there were several I didn't like, and my anxiety grew from that.

I'm a dentist - many of us are anxious people-pleasers and totally understand other people who are anxious people-pleasers. As for your experience - I would most certainly support you in that break-up. Reminds me of my orthodontist who did something that wasn't quiet right, and I went back longer than I should have. Can be quite traumatizing. I went in like you did... prepared to tell him what I thought he did wrong, did tell him - he didn't accept responsibility so I kept going back to try to get him to see my way. I eventually wrote him a letter, gave it to his front desk, and didn't return. It's been hard - things were never going to be made right. I moved on to another amazing orthodontist where I felt safe and listened to... wished I would have moved on sooner, but I felt loyal to the first orthodontist and questioned myself... learned not to do that. Here to support!

Oh my gosh you have no idea how validating it is to get this feedback from you. Thank you so much! The orthodontist I went to for my wisdom tooth removal was actually the son of the dentist I go to, and sometime during the procedure (I was asleep bc I’m afraid of dental work) poked my cheek so badly with a sharp instrument that I had a bruise on my face for months and they told me that was totally normal. Your comment has given me so much reassurance that I’m not crazy 😂

@@elyse_myers You're not crazy, but please stop seeing this family of "dentists." They are causing you harm, and that's medical malpractice--there's lawyers for this kind of thing. You might want to see about retaining one. Love you.

@@elyse_myers You can absolutely trust yourself. 💖Please do and see if there are any dentists around where you feel safe and heard. That 6 month appointment can be cancelled - if you're like me, you may feel guilty cancelling... I sat with it and realized it was just the people pleasing and not that I was wrong in cancelling. It took me awhile to get over the experience, and I was angry at myself when I didn't listen to my instincts. Annoyed that there are people who don't take responsibility for their doings - hard to fathom as I imagine many of us are the opposite and take responsibility for problems that we didn't actually cause... AND you are indeed not crazy, but rather amazing and intuitive.

i had a sucky ortho experience, too. ended up with a large chunk of my front tooth missing bc of it hitting my lower brackets. i was in middle school then so i had my mom tell him to fix it lol. he smoothed it down fairly well, but i was too scared to tell him it wasn’t as even as i wanted. years later it still annoys me even tho i realize im probably the only one to realize it lol

@DrJillianRigert 3 ай бұрын
@@alissasonnenberg4108 Ugh- I'm so sorry that happened! I am also the only one besides other dentists who can notice the damage to my teeth from ortho. It's the principle for me - the fact that the ortho kept denying it... and feeling violated when we put trust into their care. Things happen of course... and the way the professional responds matters so much! I find that I now extend compassion to my teeth and self- we did the best we could at the time, and self-compassion helps to release the frustration/anger when we can't change the outcome. What do you think would be best for you given the circumstances?

@@elyse_myers yes! That’s what they told me! That I needed a root canal on one, the tooth beside needed a crown and the other side needed cavities filled. Went for second opinion with my childhood dentist I hadn’t seen in decades and they quoted $200 to fix one cavity and nothing else needed. The other place quotes $3000. It’s scary when professionals lie especially when someone like myself (and I think a little bit you💗) can’t always defend ourselves in the moment and get flustered. I was so thankful I went and asked someone else before letting them do anything. Find a new dentist and just have them call your previous one and transfer your files. I am a huge fan of second opinions if something doesn't sound right to you. I will admit, that sometimes then you have the issue of deciding which opinion you trust more and that can be tough. For my patients, my speech during their annual physical after they admitted in my screening questions they hadn't seen the dentist for awhile was, "I'm going to give the you the card for ____ DMD. I trust him to not do anything to your teeth that doesn't need to be done." There were other offices that would pull all my patients' teeth and I was always concerned that may not have been necessary, but I'm their medical provider, not their dentist, so what do I know?

From one anxious people pleaser to another - pro tip on breaking up with someone like a dentist. When they ask you about scheduling your next appointment, tell them you need to look at your schedule and will call them back… then just never call them back. They will call you back a few times (which WILL be anxiety inducing) but just let it go to VM, delete it without listening to it, and after a few times of them calling you, they will give up. Wish I could just be more direct when it comes to situations like this but I know myself too well lol. I’ve effectively broken up with a dentist and several doctors that were terrible this way. Also - I’m sorry people are invading your personal space and coming to/driving past your house. I get that people want to meet you or let you know what a positive impact you’ve had on their lives, but that’s a scary thing and people need to respect boundaries more ❤

@bohemianmiss6282
@bohemianmiss6282 3 ай бұрын
@recoveringsoul755 For me, it is injected just under the skin in key points on the forehead, temples, sides of the head, back of the neck and where the neck meets the shoulder with the tiniest baby needle. I've had it both through my neurologist's office and separately through a pain clinic, and the shot placement was exactly the same. Takes less than 10 mins and gives months of relief. It is incredibly low risk with overall low risk side effects. It does not go into the brain or bloodstream. It does cause some muscle freezing, which is the point. I notice it the most in my forehead and being unable to use my eye brows as expressively. I can move everything else normally. That does feel a bit odd, but it's worth it not to be suffering. I hope that answers your question. I can only speak to my experiences, and I'm not a doctor, so if it's something you're looking into, I would ask a trusted, educated medical professional. It was covered by my insurance, as a side note, which, also kind of a miracle.

Breaking up with ‘professionals’ is sooooooo hard! Between the confrontation and getting gaslit half the time…… You are not alone! My trick is to write a letter. I either bring it with me to the appointment and hand it to them (I’ve never managed to be able to read it in person), or read it over the phone. I have a hard time asking for what I need, but if I pretend that it was my Mom or my kid that needed me to stick up for them, I can trick myself into to doing it for myself. Sometimes. I once had a dentist who was polishing my teeth after cleaning. ( First red flag; where's the hygienist?). He was generating heat inside my tooth, which is an indication of improper use of the instrument. I literally grabbed his wrist and asked him to stop because he was generating heat. He got really defensive and wanted to keep going. I noped on out of the exam room, paid the bill, and never returned. First and last visit. You know when something isn't right and you are not obligated in any way to stick it out or explain your leaving. Just call and cancel. You don't have to say why or offer to call back later. You aren't even obligated to answer the phone if they call, nor are you required to call them back, even if they leave a voicemail. You are in charge of your own well-being and have the authority to fire your dentist. Hang in there!

I hate confrontation too. I am low income so I don’t really have much choice on dentists (I go to a clinic that offers financial discounts based on income). So far the one I’m going to has done ok but EVERY dentist I have seen will complain about the work done by the previous dentist. Each one thinks they are the better dentist. It does NOT instill confidence!

Grew up in California my entire life. I remember seeing commercials for California for people living in California. I guess they wanted us to travel to different cities in California as well as bringing tourists from out of state. The tourism board of California was working hard to get people here. Sending love from Los Angeles 💛💜

Just call, cancel the appt, when they ask if you want to reschedule you say no thank you. No explanation needed. Also, fun fact, when your mouth is "at rest" your teeth shouldn't be touching anyhow. Your tongue should be suctioned to the roof of your mouth with a gap between teeth. But the chewing... That's when it's important that they come together.

Hey Elise! So I asked my husband about the wisdom teeth thing as I was very curious why myself. He explained that if you believe we are primitive creatures when we would eat stuff in the wild eventually our teeth would break and fall out so the wisdom teeth would then be able to move in and still enable us to have teeth and eat and survive. He did explain it a little more eloquently but that’s the jist 😊

Elyse, To answer your question about them just being around- yes wasps tend to be both pollinators and predators which makes them excellent for gardens and agriculture because they both pollinate and serve as fantastic pest control. Those wasps are likely either looking for flowers or they're looking for other insects, caterpillars, etc that they can take home to feed their larvae. Wasps are actually awesome, like bees. There's a few specific kinds that really have an attitude problem, like yellowjackets, which look a lot like the very common European paper wasp but you can tell them apart easily. The good guys have bright orange antennae tips and their legs dangle down behind them, they live in the exposed paper honey comb looking thing. Wasps and bees remember faces, so as long as you don't do anything to make them feel threatened, they will leave you alone. Although watch for wet grass on hot dry days, they get on it to drink and if you step on one, you'll both regret it. It can be a real problem around kids water play. Keeping a bowl of water with a few twigs in it (don't leave in the sun) so that they can walk down the twig to drink, will solve this. Do a quick search on the difference between yellowjackets and paper wasps; and how to identify other wasps, spiders, etc. Its such valuable information and there's a lot of really amazing and misjudged critters out there. 😊

Hearing you describe this situation with your dentist - I had a very very similar situation with a dentist that I had to go to because my dentist was overfilled in the same office 3 times for emergencies and every time I wasn’t happy with how things went but the last time I told him I thought there was something wrong like I had an infection in my tooth - I don’t remember the exact details now but rather than do anything productive with the tooth with the problem like sand down the filling on it he started sanding down the Whole/untouched tooth underneath it. I knew it wasn’t helping but wasn’t able to vocalize it and just let him do it until I could get out of there. And then I did everything I could to hold my anger and frustration in until I made it outside the office and just sobbed angry tears for the next hour. I never went back to him again or explained why I changed dentists on the spot and I’ve been so grateful ever since! But I miss my original dentist too, since it wasn’t his fault - just that he’s downsizing /retiring but he was very helpful in recommending the dental school he teaches at and getting me set up with the best team under him at the time 😇 Even though it didn’t go the way you wanted it to - kudos to you for even thinking/working up to confronting your dentist and telling him what was wrong! I never got there myself. ❤

What we did when we broke up with our family dentist was, just make an appointment with another office. Cancel your upcoming one and when they ask if you want to reschedule just say "Oh sure, let me get back to you though when I have a better idea of my schedule." And then never call them back. Just ghost that dentist.

I felt that dentist dilemma so much. I hate confrontation too, and probably would have done exactly the same. I would either need to carry someone with me (and I am a grown man, so that's not weird) or just find another dentist and ghost my old dentist, which feels disloyal and sneaky. And the new dentist would have to ask the old dentist for my dental records, right? The shame!

It's OK to cancel appointments (with notice). You do not need to give a reason. It's OK to switch medical care providers. You do not need to give a reason. There's many valid reasons for doing these things, such as scheduling changes, location issues (maybe you moved or changed work and that place is no longer convenient), price. And also simply because you want to, or you're not happy with the service. You got this!

omgosh i just went through something similar with my dentist! they fixed a cavity and my teeth haven't been the same since; bite was painful, cold was SUPER painful and when i went back to tell them i had pain, they basically told me "just brush your teeth" and then they tried to fix my bite and chipped my front tooth, which had nothing wrong with it in the first place! 😭 so now ive got this obvious chip on my front tooth that looks so ugly. so i just.... found a new dentist (who is fabulous) and found out the first one didnt really fix the cavity and it became a root canal thing. i wish you luck with your dentist issues and hopefully you can get your issue all fixed up!!

Ugh changing dentists can always be challenging- dentists just create this weird dynamic where you want them to be proud of you but they’re basically a stranger so you don’t want them to know you’re trying to make them proud. I’m not a dentist but I work with them a lot - just cancel the appointment, say you’ll call back to schedule another and just don’t. BUT, for your migraines and now that one side doesn’t touch, I’d recommend you find a dentist that does Invisalign. Sounds crazy but it helps with TMJ which is basically pressure in your jaw and can lead to headaches. You’ve got a kick-butt smile already but they’ll know how to fix the mis-alignment and hopefully make you more comfortable. Just make sure you get a dentist who is trained in Invisalign - like one that is part of AACA or Molis Coaching. Plus, a lot of them offer a free scan so you can test them out a bit and save some money for more books 😂
