Tbh, it's terrible in general... do the writers think black people are only capable of being good people when they're held back (in this case by "Z watches") and that they are inherently violent?? I mean, duuuude... don't make the oppressed party into literal monsters...
@sleepykoinu
@sleepykoinu 4 ай бұрын
Yeah like does this allegory not imply that irl minorities are dangerous monsters only kept at bay by technology/drugs..? Like the people in universe have a good reason to fear literal zombies who would kill them if the watch ever malfunctioned or ran out of battery. It'd make more sense if it was only propaganda if you want to match real life.

There’s a really great show called In the Flesh (that only got to run for two seasons rip) about the aftermath of a zombie apocalypse where the zombies have been “cured” but they have to have to take medication consistently or they’ll revert back to their mindless state. There’s a lot of tension from people who don’t want them back because they ate people, they have to wear contact lenses and makeup to blend in, and a lot of the zombies have ptsd from the entire experience. It’s very interesting. Also it’s not treated as a one-to-one allegory, but in the places where it’s analogous to anything it’s about being queer rather than racism. So the premise can be done. Just not like this 😅

In the 2nd movie it’s revealed that zombies are so “evolved” that they aren’t so dependent of Z-Bands anymore because a sharp zombie mind can still be in control without it for a while, I guess it’s like holding your breath you can do it for a certain amount of time and after practicing you can last longer but at after a while you’ll need to catch your breath again, the thing is the Z-Band neutralizes their zombie impulses but it also prevents them from using their zombie powers like zombie strength, invulnerability and high tolerance to pain and in the 3rd movie people around SeaBrook already trust zombies so much that they are now allowed to remove their Z-Bands whenever they please so they can access their zombie powers

I’m really glad Danny highlighted how the racism analogy fundamentally does not work. The same issue applies to most racism allegories in fiction because the stand in for minorities is always mutants, aliens, etc, but that comparison will always fall short because in the real world minorities literally have zero differences beyond superficial aesthetics. Even if the zombies never ate people the allegory still doesn’t work because they are still on some level physiologically different to humans in a way ie black people to white people aren’t
@horrordyke
@horrordyke Жыл бұрын
It's similar to why zootopia doesn't work, both zombies and predators were a threat + have the opportunity to continue to be a threat, the prey/humans have genuine reasons to be afraid of them, racism doesn't work like that idk why directors are convinced it makes sense

@@horrordyke to me the way I make sense of it is that with kids movies, as is what most of these movies are, Racism is a very heavy topic and while it is important to teach kids about these issues you need to do it in a way that won't traumatize them, like there's a reason movies like the OG Disney's Pinoccho aren't being made anymore and it's also easier to explain to kids who is who by giving each side defining characteristics that set them apart, there are definitely better ways to do this than Z-O-M-B-I-E-S or any other movie who use genuinely dangerous characters as the oppressed people but there's also a fine line between explaining heavy topics and getting sued this movie still sucks but that's just my opinion on the matter, I'm an internet stranger with too much time on my hands.

Fun fact, I worked at Disney World for a little bit and attended the filming of the 2019 Disney Channel Christmas special. The audience right in front of the main stage was all Cast Members (so, people college age and older). While I was there, they were filming the girl who plays Addison singing and dancing to a song for the special. In between takes, while she was mic’d up, she asked the crowd, “Who here has seen ZOMBIES??” I shit you not, one person raised their hand. She asked what they thought of it, and they yelled back “It was alright” 😭😭

The idea of zombies actually traces back to Africa and then developed in the Caribbean, particulary Haiti. The idea comes from slaves and voodoo and the belief that a person's soul can be captured, much like a slave is captured. The first references of zombies in the US were closely related to salvery. The film "White Zombie' is where white zombies started to come about and after that the zombies we know became mainstream. So the idea of zombies is related to oppression.

it's so weird when kids movies try to make allegories for racism where the "races" are different species because they almost always make segregation seem like the reasonable option, and it has some very Unfortunate implications
@bulldozer8950

@@jasperjazzieya it’s a racism allegory where the racism is like pretty justifiable. Like a totally reasonable and probably ideal compromise when one of the species potentially eats the other is…. Separate but equal. So…. Ya…

The whole Z band thing kind of reminds me of what the animated film "Zootopia" was originally going to be like, where all the predators wore collars to control them. And Disney tossed that part of the story out since it was going to be problematic.......

I think the backstory really muddies the whole “race allegory” this movie is going for, because it makes the situation far more complicated. I mean, the zombies apparently killed and ate people, and the only thing stopping them from doing it again is an electronic band. I’m pretty sure that’s a scary situation for everyone, both zombie and human, and it makes a conflict resolution way more difficult than I think this movie can manage. As an alternative, they could’ve made zombies just rise out of the ground one day. They don’t kill anyone, they’re just a medical anomaly where the dead are reanimating. But give the humans a lot of false preconceptions about zombie culture based off of legends and their depictions in media. This could not only do the race allegory better, but also show how racist depictions in media can affect how people view a certain race.

That would be much better messaging! Although, how would that mesh with the high school setting? Did Zed die as a teenager? Do zombies age, or is Addison going to grow up while he stays a teen forever?

Exactly. One of the things that racist people in the real world do is give the "its in their nature" argument. which has constantly been proven to be false. The issue with this movie is that it *literally is* in their nature to be violent. Completely destroying the race analogy. Zootopia had this same problem.
@drawingdragon
@drawingdragon Жыл бұрын
@Frying Panda Um.... no? The entire point of Zootopia was that it _wasn't_ in their nature, but false preconceptions caused everyone to _assume_ the bad things happening were because of their nature. That's... that's the point of the movie.
